But in seriousness, I'm highly suspecting that they'll pull a Mass Effect in terms of the companion, and it'll be whoever has the highest friendship with the player (and if the character has max affinity with multiple people and no romance, it'd go down a certain order or be selected randomly). If a new character is created, the companion defaults to Oghren.

This is very much NOT the case. We do not have the budget in an expansion to do full versions of multiple characters from Origins only to let the player use one. While that would be great from a replayability standpoint, it's just not feasible. Everyone does not get their own "personal favorite" coming back. That's just the way it is, folks.

But Oghren is almost nobodies favorite.....Just saying.....

Why is it that when a person dislikes a character they think most people agree with them.

Sorry bro, but the biggest "who do you want back in Awakaning poll" I've seen (well over 200 posts) had Oghren come in 4th place, only beaten by morrigan, Alistair, and Leliana.... and Oghren was fairly high above 5th place Zevran.

So from what I've seen (notice how I don't pretend to know what everyone thinks) Oghren is popular... just saying...

I'm sorry, but it's responses like this that annoy the hell out of me. I wasn't a fan of Sten, but if he was the returning character I wouldn't go and say "why Sten NOBODY likes sten, whaa whaa whaa." Cause it's a d*** move and not true.

Well, I think I know the poll you are talking about, but there is a much much bigger one (has over 1600 votes) over at greywarden.com that has Oghren coming in at 7th place behind everyone but Sten and Wynne.

I'm not trying to suggest that Oghren doesn't have fans, only that he is nowhere near the popular guy that you seem to think he is.

Are you sure that poll was not affected by the fact they showed him in the trailer.. then people who defends Bioware's choice has voted for him? Was that poll built BEFORE or AFTER the trailer? I believe that, for example, if in trailer they had shown Sten many people then might vote for him and not for Oghren

Oghren it is then, or so it seems...

I liked him but he's definitely not my favourite.

I wonder what Alistair will be doing? My mage didn't make him king for the selfish reason to keep him around and my epilogue stated he never left the players side.

Awakening is about Grey Warden business and he's still a Grey Warden; I hope there is a good explanation for his absence.

It's not a manipulation.. who may wants to manipulate anyone? for what purpose? It's just a normal behaviour of people when they see the fait accomplished... People who would like a SPECIFIC companion will vote for him/her.. People who like Oghrain and people who don't care who the retourning companion will be may vote for him... just beacuse they think "Why not?"

Action? interesting, have you bribed anyone? Image IPB The truth is out THERE.

Of course there is : you both live happily for some reasons. He gets a letter from Weisshaupt asking him an explanation. It's the King-Queen option as well, Alistair leaves to give an explanation of the Dark ritual. Or so, this is what I guess. Could be he will be the old favorite after all...

I assume you won't be able to answer my question fully (or at all) but when deciding to bring in that one companion, how did you guys come to that decision? Was it because said character wasn't that noticeable in the first game? Would the character fit well with the storyline?

Based on the dev responses in this thread, you didn't really dismiss the idea (nor comfirm) that it is Oghren that's coming back. It would seem like the best choice in order to provide more depth to Oghren (along the same lines as Morrigan or Alistair).

Oghren's awesome. Stop complaining your favorite character wasn't returning. In my mind, Oghren is the best compromise because if they're only going to bring back 1 character it would be unfair that it be a romance character since that would leave those who didn't romance that character in the dust.

This is spot on... Oghren's story is still greatly unfinished from Origins... its seems as though that was by design.  He is rude dwarf with no reason to stop fighting darkspawn, etc..  The other characters     Since he wasn't a romance option (thank goodness!!!) he is the logical choice for the reason SurfaceBeneath mentioned.  Plus he is in the trailers, so boom.... there you go.  I personally have no warmth for the dwarves at all.  They are creepy little people who live underground so I look forward to teaming up some new and interesting NPC's.  I'm kind of hoping for a warrior princess type... like Xena!!!!! That would be awesome!!!

Why people say often "Oghren's story is still unfinished from Origins?" I believe his story is complete.. we all know about what happened beetwen him and his wife.. and after this we know about his other "interests" in surface.. So.. what are you expecting more? Do you believe, just to give an example, that Sten's story is "MORE finished than Oghren's story? What is Sten's Story?? a lost sword...and after that ?? what else??

Spoilers ahead
Oghren's story : He married Branka, we don't know how or whatever, we know he married her, and lost her when she departed as a Paragon. He killed some noble, and couldn't use weapons in Orazammar anymore. He then encounters the warden, finds out about Branka AND Hesphit to in the end be alone again. His quest, to find an old flame, in one single dialogue. That's it.

Sten's story : He's part of a completely new culture, with their own beliefs. He is sent by his leader to Ferelden and see what is this Blight. However, one night, Darkspawn take out his entire crew, and he looses his sword. He wakes up in a farm, to then kill everyone of his lost blade, which is part of him, and is his soul. We find him in a cage, waiting, knowing what he did, and admiting it. He says it's a horrible thing, and to find his atonmnet he goes with the warden on the quest, to seek the answer the Arishock wants, even knowing he would never be able to return to his land without his soul. He eventually tells the story to the Warden, which helps Sten to recover his sword and only reason to live, if we might say so. Now, he has his goal again, and to repay his large debt with the warden, he decides to stay with him/her to not only find out what the blight is, but to end it completely.

I see quite a lot of difference. Sten himself has a good reason to be with you... Oghren... nope.

Ok.. if you are right this means that:

1) when they were developing Origins they had already decided to let Oghren "incomplete" and implement his character and his story in a second game...

2) After Origins when they had to decide who will be the companion to bring back someone asked "Well.. who is the creepier character in first game? OK.. so let bring him back then !!" To be honest If i was a storywriter and I had to choose someone to bring back in an xpac I believe my question should be "What is the best character we created in 1st story? So.. let's bring him/her back... " just my opinion...

There are many reasons they should bring back many of the characters.

I do exclude the romance options though :

1) Dog : would make most of the sense, since he is not known everywhere. And yeah, he's less developed then Oghren.

2) Shale : seriously, someone to take back. Unique in every aspect, possibly having a quest : not a very possible choice because it's part of a DLC to begin with.

3) Oghren : because of all the characters to join which have the ability to speak, is the most incomplete. And actually, I hear his initial Dialogue :

"Hey warden, I have a favor to ask you. Look, I just don't have anything to do. I mean, I have my new wife back home, but I miss the old adventuring days... care if I join you again pal?" Or something similar.

Who I exclude : The romance options, as said before and :

1) Sten : he returns back home if his quest is done. After all, it seems logical that he goes and perform his duty. The journey is very long apparently.

2) Wynne : she's has many endings, with Shale to Tevinter, in the royal court or whatever else. Possible yes, but not possible to convince in the ending.

Secret companion : very possible choice if kept alive. Perhaps it's him. People were blindly making wars of "It isn't Oghren" "It is Oghren" that no one ever mentioned him.

Is often left with the DLC only tag, we all know she was cut original content. I say thats a strength, no one has considered the new warden option, he/she will not know whos/who.. Shale would be like a new companion to some.

Reason why I think it wont be: She usually heads off with wynne in every game ive had. And she doesnt *seem* very popular.

He doesnt *seem* very popular either. But he was fleshed out alot in Origins mainstory - dont know if theres much more you can do with him.

On romances.

Leliana's personal quest goes beyond romance content, what if you didnt kill marjolaine? unresolved.
Morrigan again, flemeth + Ritual.
Zevran, just killed an important Crow member.. expect a reply. Thats not complete.
Im really not going to try Alistair, too many options here.

Why do you exclude romance option? If you exclude them because you think that all 4 romancable characters are too expensive to bring back in xpac because they provide a lot of work I agree with you..
But if you think that you cannot bring back one of them just because "it's not nice for all other people who romanced anyother" as someone said in these topics, well.. I don't agree...
You probably know I'd like to see Leliana.. But if they decide to bring back, for example Zev.. I will be happy for all those people who romanced Zev.. At least someone will be able to continue his romance in xpac...

Shale can also end up in Orzammar helping the dwarves. This only happened if I didn't use it in the party that much. Other endings, I do not know.

I never thought about it much, but yeah shale SHOULD work in the expansion, it doesn't seem fair to cut him from it. People paid for him....Lucky PC users, they will probably just make a mod that lets them take all the characters from the DAO and into the expansion...Could probably do it, but there is no way console users are going to have that pleasure.
