My roommate played DA:O before I did. He played on Normal which he then switched to Easy, and then quit playing out of frustration because he still sometimes encountered enemies that posed a challenge. He doesn't like pausing the game to issue commands -- ever -- and prefers to just control his main and let NPCs take care of themselves. He warned me away from the game because the difficulty of progressing past boss fights was too annoying.

As for me, I play on Nightmare, and I find that the game still becomes a little boringly easy whenever there's more than one mage in the party. I like to constantly pause the fights and fiddle with every little thing.

The point of this thread is not that I am more hardcore than my roommate (Hardly! You should see me trying to play a shooter -- Die. Reload. Die. Reload. Die. Throw controller.), but just that there is dissatisfaction at both ends of difficulty preference.

How much does the difficulty spectrum need to be expanded? Do we need a new setting at each end ("Screaming Nightmare" and "Just Let Me Win")? Or should the existing settings just be made further apart?

And what exactly should be done? My strong preference is that rather than just pumping up enemy damage and HP, the harder settings give them better AI as well. But is this feasible -- could Bioware design encounters as well if they didn't know what AI setting individual players would be using?

In my experience a large part of the difficulty depends on party setup. As you said it's much easy with 2 or more mages. Biggest difficulty for me with a melee party was dealing with ranged enemies, for which I mostly used bombs. It also depends on the playstyle of the player and how willing he/she is to pause the game or switch character control. The AI of your companions isnt all that smart, even with good tactic settings.
