1. Game:
Mass Effect 2
Physical disc
Exe file Version: 1.00

2. System details:
Processor: Genuine Intel® CPU T2300  @ 1.66GHz, 2 cores, 1662 MHz each.
RAM: 1 Gb

Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400
VRAM: 256 МБ
Driver: 179.48

Sound Adapter: Conexant HD Audio output

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (SP3)
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c

3.Problem details:

Nature of the problem:
Usable objects (doors, computers etc.) do not highlight and can't be used.
More specifically:
While there is no weapon in hands, it is impossible to use any object as they do not highlight, no matter what I do and how I stand.
While in combat mode - with weapon in hands - they sometimes highlight, though "highlightnment" blinks continuously even if I do not touch anything.

When the problem occur:
From the beginning of the game.

Where the problem occur:
Everywhere? I'm not sure, as bug makes it physically impossible to finish the starting mission.

It won't help your problem at the moment but it's food for thought around this type of isse generally.

The game uses some odd things for its visual glitter. One of them is the way it uses LensFlares. If you turn off LensFlare, it does... and it also makes it impossible to interact with any object anywhere.

If they are related then it would seem related t the way it's processing the games lensflares on your box but I'm just guessing here. It could be something totally different for you. I just know turning of LensFlares absolutely removes all interaction everywhere because they have tied the code into that feature in a way that is unexpected.

It may not be completely relevant to your issue but it looks like your system is not really up to spec.

OS: Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7

Processor: 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU

Memory: 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7

Graphics: 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support)

DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)

Hard Drive: 15 GB

Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible

is the 'Minimum' and you are riding the ragged edge except your CPU which is actually below 1.8 Dual

Ditto same problem... This game is sweet. I can be any character, and run around a virtual space smaller than my apartment all i want. Oooh and look at the special abilities i cant use, because i cant even pick up the gun at the beginning of the game. So what i want to know is if this is the entire game experience how do i get my money back???

The fact I can't understand is how CPU slightly under edge affects object highlightening :) I understand when this leads to lags, "perfomance speed" issues or even to crashes, but I do not have these.

It's good that I've already walked through the game on stationary computer, anyway. Just wanted to have it on notebook too, but seems that I'll have to put this thought aside for a while.

boilerplate disclaimer: I am not a qualified Computer Tech, nor am I a Programmer in 'any' currently used language.

@ Smileygeek what kind of system are you using?

@ AlNahar so you get it to work fine on a desktop but the notebook has problems? That 'could' be the issue at fault as the Sys reqs I have seen caution that Notebook/Laptop Graphics/Sound cards have not been extensively tested for compatibility. I wish I had better news for you but ........

I had that problem at first. When I put a different game on my laptop it told me to upgrade video card drivers. I did, and it seems to have fixed the highlighting problem for ME2 as well.Try updating video card drivers. Might solve the problem.

I have that problem sometimes. What works for me is to hit the escape key. Then when you exist the screen it brings up immediately hit the space bar. The object will only be highlighted for a second,so hit that spacebar as sson as you exit the screen.

Same issue here. I'm aware it's most likely my below-minimum specs on this laptop, however: when I hit esc (menu) and again to get back into the game, the selection reticule lights up briefly, and that's when I pick up or activate what I'd want to.

I have the same issue with selecting enemies, it's barely possible to play a vanguard because of that.

I'm not complaining though. I'm below minimum specs, so I'm even lucky to even get a visual, however if there's a solution, I'd be very happy to hear it.

This issue goes beyond just object highlighting but to target highlighting as well. It is exceptionally hard to biotically charge targets because it is almost as hard to highlight them as many objects in the game. Additionally biotic powers that you are supposed to be able to "curve" per pregame hype will only do so if you can highlight the target.

Fun game but it would be nice to know if this is on the fix list.

Bump

any solutions/suggestions yet, or having someone from BW confirm this/assure it will be fixed? I'm seeing posts like this all over the technical forums.

I think I solved it on my comp, it may solve it for others as well:

Updated DirectX (linky)
and adjusted some settings in the NVidia control panel: 3D settings - let application decide (so no forced AA, AF etc. I didn't even know I had those things turned on, also boosted my FPS)

Still, it would be nice to have a response from Bioware

wouldnt it make more sense to just do what I did? I had your problem. I performed simple upgrades to video card drivers. Solved problem. Logically if you are still having same problem , try same solution. If solution fails then contact higher authority, if solution succeeds then be grateful it does not cost you more money. Suggestion is try solution of upgrading video card drivers before attempting other plans.Anything more may be unnecessary and/ or accessive. Or plain irrelivant.

I had this problem too so I have a few suggestions for those who are still facing it. For the people who are affected, are you using a monitor that is widescreen? If so, you might want to change the aspect ratio by changing the graphics resolution. You should do this via the configuration button on the launch screen.

Even if your monitor is not widescreen, you might wanna try changing the resolution anyway. You could be using one that is higher than what your machine can comfortably manage.

What if those were up to date and I just didn't mention that because you already did? <_<

Effectively, after a little more tweaking and testing, it seems to be a performance/graphics issue. The more graphics I turn off (high quality bloom, light environmental shadows, dynamic shadows, harmonic lighting, lower resolution), the better the targeting reticule reacts in both combat and with the environment.
Video drivers of course help a lot in performance, but if an update fails to do the trick, lowering graphical load helps.

My dad had this issue on his computer. He went into his video card control center and lowered the settings more towards performance then visual quality. It fixed the issue for him entirely.

Good luck to all you peoples with this issue.

The OP on this particular thread had ignored the system requirements entirely and had no one to blame beyond his / her own personal arrogance.  That 7400 Go video card was crap four years ago, and is "manure" today.  Of course it won't work, and since no one else commentng offered any real, useful information, they were never given any real, useful advice (well, one person, near the end finally said it).

Junk video isn't supposed to be usable, and it is not.  The 7400 is even named as inadequate in the requirements.

This direct from Bioware:

I just want to address some of the complaints also. Its not that we don't care about this bug. We just don't know what's wrong yet.

My guess is that your framerate is too low, or there is something wrong with your graphics driver. I can't get into specifics, but the game relies on the graphics card to determine if something was "visible recently". If your frame rate is low enough, then the game will never think something is "visible recently".

Please let me know anything relevant about your graphics card or graphics settings, including the framerate. if possible. If the game is under 10 FPS, it may cause problems.

Thomas_R_Roy wrote...

Ok so I think for some of you the problem is the low framerate. For now, the best solution is for you to get a faster framerate. You can get this by reducing your resolution. We made a technical decision that the game would rely on the framerate being at least a certain level.

I apologize because I know you're great fans, and you want to see the game in full glory even though your machine isn't the fastest. But at the same time, we had to have technical limitations somewhere.
