I think both games are about of equal worth. Their strengths and weaknesses do not overlap. Play 1 for the better narrative and greater flexibility in combat. Play 2 for the better characters and greater specialization of combat.

The N7 Missions are pretty interesting as well.

I do remember one thing about ME1 over ME2, Justin2K. I had more fun playing ME1 over ME2 and having fun is what matters most to me.

This pretty much sums it up for me as well.

ME 2 is a great game though... these are the two best single player games I've ever played through, but I'd have to give ME 1 a slight edge.

Get both. Keep your fingers crossed that ME 3 takes the refinement demonstrated in ME 2 and returns to the great storytelling and emotional immersion that made ME 1 so groundbreaking.

Elaborating more on my previous point. I think the gameplay in Mass Effect 2 was vastly superior. The side missions all felt fresh, the thermal clip action added balance to the game and forced you to use all of your weapons and the enemies actually reacted differently depending on where you shot them.

Also, the weapon variety was much better.

As great a sequel as Mass Effect 2 was, I never felt an impending sense of doom with the story as I did with Mass Effect 1. In fact, I thought the Collectors really didn't stand much of a chance even if they were to succeed.

I was more worried about the Illusive Man to be honest.

The Sidequests are better in ME2, the main story was better in ME1.

That's all I'm going to say for now...both are exceptional games...but I didn't LOVE ME2 the same way as ME1.

Tough one. I liked Mass Effect 1 as it was so damn epic, from the title Virgil music to becoming a spectre to leaving the Citadel the first time.

And Mass Effect 2 and it's so damn fun combat and side missions

And with the ability to transfer saves it turns the "I'm going to do a run of ME" to a 2 game marathon. Love the franchise and universe that have been created here.

So I'm going to wimp out and say I love 'em both.

As somebody has already suggested, I'd say get both. ME1 cant be that expensive nowadays, and will give you a lot of good gaming hours.

It would be unfair to compare the two in my point, since ME1 is the first part of an epic triology scifi-games, setting the canon and mood, while ME2 is an (almost) perfect follow up.

So, I'd recommend you to buy ME1 and play it through first (in short version :) ).

I would not play ME2 without playing ME1.  ME2 is part of a trilogy, playing it first is like watching LotR: Two Towers without seeing the first.  Your decisions from ME1 are integrated into so many different places and ways that you really, really, really should play ME1 first.

That being said, overall gameplay in ME2 is more fun.

I like ME1, but I love ME2. It feels better, plays better, and hooked me in a lot better as well. ME1 I nearly gave up on when I first hit the Citadel (one of the dullest places I've visited with some of the dullest people populating it), but luckily for me I persevered and once you leave the Citadel the game really begins. As for ME2, at no point did I go "This game is a drag, I could be doing something else" like I did in ME1. All the parts that dragged in ME1 were removed or streamlined in ME2, overall improving the gameplay experience.

It's funny, now that we are able to talk without these threads devolving into flame wars immediately...

It seems that Bioware did a great job of incorporating desired changes into the new game and of straddling two groups of gamers looking for different things.

I have faith that ME 3 will be able to return to great storytelling and that "epic" feeling while maintaining the smoother gameplay that makes the second game so good.

stofsk, I found your post interesting because I could have written it and switched the positions of the two games.  I very nearly gave up on my first playthrough of ME 2 because I got bored.  I'm very glad I stuck it out though : )  Believe it or not, the citadel missions were a lot of fun for many of us and did a GREAT job of developing the characters involved before they go out to save the universe.

I honestly thought this too until I replayed ME1 last week (For that "Full Experience" everyone likes to talk about), but if it wasn't for those drastic repetitive level designs of the side quests of ME 1, one could really say the side quests were better in ME 1 then ME 2.

Some of them actually had full voice overs too in the SQ, while in ME 2 is mostly Datapad notes, a few cutscenes here and there. However, what makes a lot of people enjoy ME 2 over ME 1 in terms of the side quests, certainly has to be the varied level designs, which was awesome in the 2nd one. So overall, I'd like to see some of the story elements of the first one, to go with that awesome level designs of the 2nd! :). Also, as some people have pointed out, I would not consider the Character Loyalty missions as side quests, even though it was optional, it was really an intergral part of the story itself for character development, that it would have been silly to avoid that content.

Overall though, I enjoy the stremlined elements of the 2nd one. Also, to those that complain about not enough character development in the 2nd one, I really don't know if I can agree with that because I became attached to every single character in the ME2, so I feel it did its job.

As many people have stated, just get both, you won't regret it.

For me, ME 1 had better character develpoment (i.e. I cared a lot more about my team than i did in ME 2) and I really felt a sense of urgency to complete the main storyline.

The oft maligned Mako sidemissions for me created a grand sense of desolation and scale missing in ME 2.  I admit freely that I ended up loving the Mako and I actually enjoyed "mountain climbing" with it.  This may have something to do with the fact that I climb mountains in real life : )  In any case, aside from the repetetive building models, the secondary planets were stark and amazing environments the went a long way toward removing the "linear" feel that plagues ME 2.

The emotional immersion created by ME 1 was infinitely more intense for me.  Some of the cutscenes literally put tears in my eyes in the first game.. you really felt like you were a good guy making sacrifices to do the right thing in that game.  In ME 2 I feel morally compromised from square one, like being a paragon type doesn't matter so much.

The combat is a wash for me.. I like the new combat, but I REALLY miss running a squad with tons of "independently timed" powers to throw at enemies.  Boy do I miss using maxed out lift + throw on a colossus or prime....

Also, without spoilers, I can say that the basic premise of the main story in ME 1 was fascinating and solid from a "hard scifi" standpoint.  Sure, there were some plot holes and a little suspension of disbelief was required, but by and large the plot was worthy of a Frank Herbert or Dan Simmons novel.  The "plot" of ME 2 feels like something from one of the recent (horrible) superhero movies or really bad made-for-television science fiction (I'm looking at you, syfy channel...)

To sum up, the best way to describe my preference for ME 1 is that it has a "feel" that I will always love and never forget... and this "feel" was not carried over into the sequel.

Just to remind you, I still love ME 2 but for entirely different reasons. I think the INCREDIBLE atmosphere in Afterlife alone is worth the cost of admission : )

I would definitely recommend playing through ME 1 before starting ME 2.  It must be dirst cheap now, and you'll enjoy the second game MUCH more after the first.

This must be a difference in taste, but I felt ME2 had an epic feeling. Though there was a difference in scale between the games, for example ME1 had a big fleet battle at the end while ME2 had a more personal small heroic ship vs one big bad ship. Both stories though were epic in scope: humanity under threat, and Shepard the only one doing something about it (or Shepard and TIM in the case of ME2).

If you enjoyed that part to ME1, more power to you. I'm curious what you found boring initially in ME2 though? I know it's just a difference in tastes but I felt ME2 drew me in better than ME1 did, though ME1 was itself a good game.

They're both awsomely awsome with a side of awsome.

Though, I am enjoying ME2 a little more in terms of the combat and character development. (Squad memebers need more interaction with each other...ADD PARTY BANTER!!!)

Hard to be specific without spoilers, but ME 2 just feels like a universe where the obvious answer to every problem is to shoot your way out.  Combat just for the sake of combat is boring to me.  In ME 1 I usually felt like I had exhausted all other options when the shooting started.

POTENTIAL SPOILER:

Also finding out I was working for my arch enemy gave me a strong "what's the point" feeling.

Both games have their strengths and faults, so it's hard for me to choose. In a lot of ways I prefer the original game, but ME2 did do some stuff better. As an RPG fan though I'm going to have to go with the former I think... if only just. ME1 was admittedly flawed, but many of those flaws didn't bother me as much as it did some people and the flaws ME2 has are more annoying and critical for me, despite the things it improved on. ME1's flaws also didn't tend to bother me for a while until several playthroughs... while ME2's ones were immediately apparent to me and bothered me straight away, or at least after looking back post first playthrough. I think I prefer a broken RPG to a dumbed-down one too. And some of the things others find tedious and boring about ME1 I actually applaud and enjoy and thus miss from ME2. I can see the perfect Mass Effect game being born through a mix of the two of them, if the right mix is done. I'm hoping that BioWare listen to the fans who were disappointed and take into account some of the things they've said so that ME3 can be made a stronger RPG than the second game was.

Mass Effect 1 is better (in my opinion). The story is far better. In ME2 they go the dragon age kinda standalone-gather-allies route which I find lazy.

I prefer Mass Effect 1 to be honest. Just really for the story and characters.

I felt emotionally engaged with the characters in the first Mass Effect, they always seemed to have something new to say to me when I went to see them and talk about their lives and experiences. The majority of the time I went to my people in Mass Effect 2 the conversations went something like this "Got time to talk?" "not now Shepard I've got something else to do."

Also the pacing was better for me in Mass Effect 1. Saren and the Geth were an ever present threat which I felt were just always in the corner of my eye. I spent so long recruiting team-mates and doing side missions for them to find out something new that I was beginning to forget the Collectors were even in the game.
