I am not sure which is the better one. I like both.
I liked the story of ME1. I was intrigued about what was going on. Piece by piece the story unfolded. The more you afvanced in the story, the more was revealed. ME2 didn't do that for me. In the final part of the story I had to giggle a bit and think of Zappa's Monster Movies. It conquered the world. And there is always a girl who trips over a little ice cone.

The best part of ME2 is Tali (no I didn't have her as a LI). She fitted what I was expecting from her and I really like the missions she was involved it. The second time I played ME2 I saved here for last.
I was disappointed by Garrus. He became something he shouldn't be. At least in my game. Can't say more than that, because of spoilers.
Wrex was a total disappointment. He could not take his fat behind from that throne. They might as well not have him included at all. Terrible.
Ashly acted in ME2 as I was expecting from her. Incredibly short, but well done. Kaidan alays died on me so I have no idea how he is in ME2.
Liara was awfull in ME2. Even with the knowledge about her role in the time between ME1 and ME2 she made a bad appearance. Her mission was childish and her character didn't fit her at all., I wished I could drop her as a LI, because in my point of view (it seems I am in the minority) I cannot trust her.
It seems that a lot of people don't like the way the ME1 LI interests are handled in ME2 and I am one of them. Why include them at all if they don't play a role in Shepards live. What a nonsense.
Legion was great! I really loved that character. Too bad you had him
late in the game. I always knew that the geth couldn't be all bad. I
even created a thread about that on the old boards. He exceeded my
expectations. I am a bit puzzled now. Erm. Are there female geth?
I was surprised by Miranda in the end game. I didn't trust her before that. In my second playthrough I will give her some more attention. She is handy to have around during fights and she was part of a lot of missions.
I think Jacob was created to make you ease up a little. His background and the way he acted should be familiar. But I think the character was a bit shallow. Still, I liked him enough to accompany me on most missions.
I planned to do more with Tali and Garrus, but it turned out that I rather worked with biotics. Whenver there was something to do with geth or other androids she was part of the away team.
Samara was a bit over the top, but I liked that character anyway. She was over the top paragon that made me question her motives and actions.
Thane wasn't that interesting to me, although his background story wasn't bad. He felt like a good introduction to the drell. Just as Tali was a good introduction to quarians in ME1. I am not interested in what happens to him after ME2. His story allows that anyway.
Grunt is a shallow character. I could do without him. I included him just to do his missions. After that he stayed on the Normandy.
I wish there was some looting in ME2 and customization of crew member armor. In ME1 I was building up my team more direct than do just a loyalty mission. Hunting for armor, bio-amps, omni tools and weapons was part of that. In ME2 everyone can use most of what you find. That looks like it solves the problem of finding the rare items, but that could also be solved by getting rid of the random number generator which caused them to be incredibly hard to find. In ME2 I have no options whatsover to select armor for the crew. The naming of the items in ME1 was awfull, but at least I could view there stats or use the numbering in the name of the items to get a rough idea what items were better. In ME2 I keep forgetting what weapon is the better one, until I use them.
I like the N7 armor in ME2 and the way it can be customized and recolored. Very cool.
I don't like the heat clips. I don't have a problem with using them (I arely ran out and if I did it was my own fault). But it doesn't make sense when they were not required in ME1. BW should really do something about consitency in their games. If something does not work in their eyes then don't ommit it or change it radically, but try to improve it instead.
I don't like the new stats system. In ME1 I felt that I was becoming better during the game. Because the stats are now handled differently and because of the scaling I don't have the idea that I am getting better or more effective during the game. I can clear a location just as fast in the begiining of the game than in the end. In the old systems there were more diverse traits I could use and steer the character development. In the end of ME1 I felt like everything was going smooth, because I "worked" for it. Now everything is smooth no matter what level you are.
The missions are much better than in ME1. BW really tried to make them feel different and add little stories to them. And they also made them look more unique.
I am a bit puzzled what exactly triggers the main ME2 missions, though. There seems to be a point of no return and I can't figure out when it happens. In my very first game it happened way too soon. I wasn't even ready with doing all the loyalty missions. So I abandoned that character and started a new game. This time the point of no return kcked it when I did most of the side missions and all loyalty missions. I still wonder what made the difference. My current character (imported from ME1 too) started with a lot of extras (probably some achievement kicked in). I started at level 5 (just as the other one) and I achieved level 30 after doing the loyalty missions and I have done just a handful of side missions. Again I am puzzled by that. I think I am going to hop through the Omega 4 relay and hope that will trigger the end game sooner.
