Does your Mass Effect PC install process crap out because of
corrupted files, even when installing from the retail DVD? Does it spit
out moronic error messages about the non-existent saferun.exe and
saferun.dll? About ready to return the game for a refund? If so, hold
up, because BioWare has released a rather complicated workaround to bypass their majorly screwed installer:
You will need:
1) access to the contents of the data directory (either off CD, download, temp files, etc)
2) WinRar or 7zip or any tool that can extract .rar files.
Steps:
1) Create a folder on your system somewhere. Default for the installer is "C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\" or a games folder.
2) Open each .rar file in the utility chosen (WinRar for e.g.)
3) Extract each .rar file into this folder. If you are using an
English build, you won't need to extract any .rar file that has a
different language code (_es, _fr, _de, _it, etc)
4) After extracting all files, your folder should look like this:
...\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\
...\\Mass Effect\\BioGame\\
...\\Mass Effect\\data\\
...\\Mass Effect\\docs\\
...\\Mass Effect\\Engine\\
...\\Mass Effect\\MassEffectLauncher.exe
5) Run the MassEffectLauncher.exe and quit immediately.
6) Run the "Mass Effect _code.exe" from the data folder. Enter your CD Key, click next, it will exit out.
7) Run the Launcher again, hit "Config". under the "Repair" tab,
you can re-create your shortcuts if running XP. If running Vista, I'm
sorry, you can't add the game to the Game Explorer in these
instructions.
9) Quit back to the launcher.
10) Play! (everything should work nicely now)
Followed the instructions, but when I boot it and try to open the configuration utility it crashes. I get the feeling that this has to do with the fact that when I extract all the .rar files pretty much each one has at least one corrupt file in it. Any ideas? Please?
P.S. I'm way over the system specs, I run ME2 at full everything so that can't be the problem, but I do have windows 7 if maybe thats the problem (UAC disabled).

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate X64
Processor: Intel Core Duo E8500
VGA: ATi Radeon HD4850 (512 MB)
PSU: HuntKey 650W
MoBo: ASUS P5-SE/EPU
RAM: 4GB
Between yesterday (the 4th day of trying) and today, three things changed. [First], I'd just completed a re-installation of my system. This was planned well in advance and had nothing to do with the game. [Second] All the updates were installed including Service Pack 1. [Third], I swapped out my DVD drive for one I had stored away.
After reading online that the SecuRom associated with the Mass Effect DVD's had issues with some DVD readers, I can say that this is probably true, because after switching them, the installation was flawless and speedy. The original device I used was made by NEC and the one I've now connected was made by LiteOn. Whether this is a manufacturing or device issue, I can't say... Your mileage may vary. Likewise, I'm not sure that the complete installation of updates didn't contribute to the successful installation, but I dare say that it didn't hurt. Ironically, Dragon Age - Origins installed without a hitch using my original DVD drive and without all the updates. Again, *Your mileage may vary!*
What I come away with is that it doesn't matter if you install using Administrator Mode or Compatibility Mode, (I didn't use either). What you should do is insure that your system is completely updated and check to make sure that your installation medium isn't the problem. Obviously, the latter doesn't apply to those who installed using Steam or D2D... Then again, who's to say that the SecuRom won't take issue with a person's hard drive? After all, who'd have thought it would with certain DVD-Rom drives? If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me.
All in all, I hope this information helps someone get this game installed. It's definitely worth the time and effort.

Clearly... I don't have a problem... anymore. Of course if you'd read my comment you'd know that. On that note, I don't see how someone's attempt to help others became your problem.

Also, if as you say the find function is flawed and led me to an (appropriately titled) thread that addressed the problem I *was* having and I came here to help, who really cares what you think? This thread is at least a year old. Did you need time to work up your "rudeness quotient" before addressing this issue? It seems to me you're coming off about as half-cocked (and late) as I am (in your opinion).
I'm done here.
*Rudeness is a weak person's grasp at power.*
