Does anyone know if it is possible to prevent the tips that come up during gameplay from coming up? I'm getting tired of seeing all these little hints that I already know; I don't need the game to tell me I can use the right-mouse button to aim my weapon while I'm fighting the final boss, I know how to launch probes, and I'll end the mission when I feel like it! That last one is particularly annoying, since it pastes itself over the conversation wheel and takes away from the cinematic feel.

I know that there's no in-game option, but is there a way to edit any of the config files to disable this stuff? It's far from game breaking and it's definitely not a major issue, but I would really, REALLY prefer to do without them.

I really hope the coming patch fixes this. Very annoying.

I did a search and found no answers, so given that the game has been out for a month I am bumping this up in the hopes someone has found a coalesced.ini setting to do this!

They can be disabled, here's how :-)
Download, extract and start the Coalesced Editor http://social.biowar...t/1854/#details
in the left section, go to BIOGame > [SFXGame.BioHintSystemBase] > m_bEnabled and change TRUE to FALSE. In the menu bar, click Coalesced commands > rebuild. It definitely disables the info boxes on the right about research, resources, paragon/reneage points etc.

Edit: Meh, it doesn't work all the time :-( The hints in the tutorial and at the Normandy crash site still show. Maybe they are hardcoded. The 'launch probe' hint was removed, though.

It also seems possible to fine tune this a bit, since there are two types with entries for each in-game popup:
  • m_aHints (the yellow flashy ones):
    (HintName="TutorialWeaponEquipHint",
    Enabled=false, MaxDifficulty=3,
    DefaultText=338688, PCText=338689,
    DisplayDuration=0.0,
    ClearEvent="ClearTutorialHint",
    HintPosition=SFXHINTPOS_Top)
    So apparently they can be individually enabled or disabled, or for certain difficulty levels.
    EDIT: no, doesn't work at least not in the tutorial.
  • m_NotificationData (paragon/renegade points, research, credits, resources etc.)
    (nmType="AchievementUnlocked",
    Priority=120,
    bCanBeMerged=false,
    srTitle=337484, srSubTitle=0,srBody=0,srAltBody=0,
    DisplayTime=2.5, even if you set this to 0.0 the box still pop's up
    sImageResource="GUI_GlobalIcons.Notifications.AchievementProgress_256")

The info boxes are fine, I am more worried about the hints, so changing all m_aHints to "false" should work?

Some hints seem to be hardcoded or outside coalesced.ini. If you change BIOGame > [SFXGame.BioHintSystemBase] > m_bEnabled to FALSE you'll NOT see the notification boxes. The only hint that was definitely removed by this is 'launch probe'. Probably some others as well, but I haven't had time to check others.

Ok I tried that, first thing I noticed was that the hit ESC to level up (or something like that) hint was removed. I like the notifications though, so I don't know if I will keep the change. Thanks for the help though.

Editing of the Coalesced.ini file is discouraged by BioWare. Strange, then, that BioWare haven't implemented an option to disable pop-ups in a patch. How many voices begging for this fix must BioWare hear before they do anything about this?

Come on BioWare, surely this isn't outside your team's ability to correct? Do you truly believe that anyone will be upset with you implementing this option? I guess most people won't know about this until they've bopught the game, so you won't lose money (sweet, sweet money!) by not fixing it. Conversely, you won't make any money by correcting it. Greedy EA slaves. I miss the old BioWare.

Pardon the necro post but has anyone had any luck with disabling the game tips without the use of the Coalesced Editor program? Said program refuses to work on my computer so it's not an option for me.

Use Notepad++ and the ini fixer instead, as I have found them to be more reliable. Links in this post;
http://social.biowar...06/index/869923
The section you need to find is this;
[SFXGame.BioHintSystemBase]
m_bEnabled=TRUE

Set it to false, and it should disable most of them, with the exception Tutorial popups, and some DLC related popups.

I know it's been three months, but I would like to know if there's anything new on this front. I'm looking to make some music videos and I really want to get rid of the hints and such so I can use gameplay footage in addition to cutscenes. Thankfully I can hide the HUD and minimize the quickbar. I just need this extra bit to toggle off the "press [button] to" perform corresponding action.

One other thing since I'll come back here for updates: Hopefully someone can tell me how to use the coalesced editor to mod out the ammo power visuals. I'm going to look anyway, but at least this way I'll get answers to both questions in one place which I find preferable.

Also, thank you to whoever created the coalesced editor. I like that searching is much easier with it. =D

It was RoadCrewWorker that made the coalesced.ini editor that I like.

I think that the in game hints such as the pop ups that contain things like press space and hold left shift shouldn't even have been in the game to begin with due to all those instructions never were completed.

I would have liked to have at least seen the devs update the pop-up menu instructions with any personalized keybindings the players make. How hard is it to write a couple extra lines of code to update the menus with any keybind overrides I made? Not hard, let me tell you.
