I'm dreading Horizon and trying to decide who besides myself (Soldier) and Miranda would be the best asset.

Currently I'm doing a playthrough on Insanity with an Adept, and as a bonus I'm trying to only use the pistols.
Who I take: Garrus, Zaeed/anyone who can use a sniper rifle. Sometimes I take one, sometimes both, but for where I'm at in the game I like two snipers. If not Garrus, then Miranda.
Weapons/Powers: Anti-shield, the M-93 Incisor Sniper rifle, Knockdown abilities, and Biotic combos. That means with Zaeed, M-93, Disruptor Ammo and Concussive shot; with Garrus, M-93, Overload and Concussive Shot; with Miranda, Overload and Warp, for the Warp/Singularity nuke.
How do I use them: I like to use my squad as a distraction, and use their guns more than their abilities for killing/damaging enemies. I tend to station them in a position and either lure the enemy into a trap, or flank and use CC moves. My squad actually tends to do more killing then me, as I mainly focus on incapacitation and distraction
Here's a video where I show how I use my squad against enemies and how I use them to kill a Heavy Mech without using my heavy weapon: Squad Tactics / Heavy Mech Tactics

EDIT: But I always took Miranda for her passive bonus to health and damage.

For my Insanity run, I've found Miranda to be an asset. With Warp and Overload, she helps me deal with anything and everything. I'm only 3 recruit missions in... so I can't have too much of a valid opinion...

If you have the blackstorm, use it for the final area in Horizon, good for controlling the mob of husks so you can focus on the scions.
Beyond that, really any of the available squadmates will work well with soldier at Horizon since your soldier can put out a lot of damage. I like taking those that have armor burning skills such as Miranda and Mordin.
I too was dreading Horizon with my Adept on insanity -- low level Adepts lack hitting power IMO. Last night I surprisingly had a relatively easy time of it using Grunt and Mordin.

For example, as a sentinel myself, zaeed is pretty constant cause of his disruptor ammo and AR. I dun need miranda cause her skills are in my skill base. Garrus' skills are in zaeed's skill base and mine. I will take Jacob rather than mordin cause Jacob can use incendiary ammo (as like incinerate) and he uses shotguns. Plus sometimes i use his pull with my throw for some pull-throw tag team.
If I need more firepower, I will take Grunt instead of Jacob.

Mechs (Fenrir, Loki & Ymir)
- Zaeed & Miranda is perhaps the best pre-Haven combination.
- Garrus is also a strong contender, but only after his loyalty mission.
- Later game Tali is ok, but can be quite fragile. Her bonus power helps though.
- Legion would be awesome, but by the time you get him you're probably out of missions with these enemies.
Geth
- Legion and Tali are both very solid against Geth, and can work well together. Two drones (attack on veteran or lower, splodie on the higher difficulties) and alot of hack micro can make the Geth rather trivial.
- Garrus should be loyal by now, so he is a good replacement for either Zaeed or Miranda.
- In one playthrough, I made Zaeed my mech specialist and gave him squad disruptor ammo. He worked satisfyingly well with anyone.
Blue Suns
- Miranda really shined against these mercs, as did Samara.
- The strongest one I found though was Morinth, when paired with Miranda. Dominate and Warp is a very effective combo.
- Garrus once loyal fights very well against the Suns, and teams nicely with any biotic. I found Garrus with group AP ammo and Thane (with no points in his wimpy ammo, thus allowing an early maxed throw & warp) tore through the Suns at long range.
Eclipse
- Very similar to the Suns, but with a bit more of a focus on warp or reave. Morinth/Samara & Miranda were again very strong, although there was less need for overload so I switched out Miranda for Thane with pleasent results.
- Garrus & Thane were every bit as strong together as they were against the Suns.
Blood Pack
- The prevalence of armour, with the addition of barriers on the nastiest Pack rats pushes warp to the fore again, typically enough. Morinth/Samara & Miranda were again strong.
- Thane and Mordin were very satisfying on Tuchanka, with things burning most satisfyingly. Thane's throw made for good control of bull rushing varren/vorcha/krogan (wait, everything in the Blood Pack bull rushes, damn crazies).
- Grunt deserves a mention as he is possibly your best choice for fights out of cover, combining his ability to soak damage with the claymore shotgun. Very good at stopping fast running melee critters. On that note...
Husks, Abominations & Scions
- My least favourite foes. Grunt is always first on my list here for the above reasons. He is one of the few supporting characters who has even a small chance of surviving being mobbed by husks on higher difficulties.
- Mordin shines, if you can keep him alive. Group neural shock/freeze and group incinerate are great against husks, especially if you can get them in a bottleneck.
- Biotics are also handy, but more so on the lower difficulties. Samara/Morinth, Thane and in particular Jack are very effective.
- Scions are the problem. Garrus rocks their socks, but husks rock his if you're not careful. I found noone in the group was as good against Scions as I was, regardless of which class I play. Therfore I based my squads on dealing with husks efficiently so I could deal with the pus bags.
Collectors
- I found there were two ways to go with squaddies here. Either focus on incinerate/warp/reave or focus on sniper rifles. Base this decision on what abilities you yourself bring.
- Samara/Morinth and either Thane or Miranda is very strong here. I liked Morinth and Thane for the bug faces myself, but it required me providing a decent squad ammo power (warp ammo on that playthrough) Dominate/warp was just unfair on the drones, and their shooting wasn't bad either.
Beyond this I found that Grunt was unversally useful, followed closely by Garrus. Tali was really rather weak against anything that wasn't a shielded synthetic. Legion less so but he comes so late in the game half the varieties of enemies are all dead. Jack only seemed to do well on low difficulties, though she was still useful against husks on higher ones (if a bit squishy). Jacob... was just too weak. I would have left him behind on his loyalty mission, if I could have. He gets the wooden spoon in my oppinion.
