Driving around in the Mako made for way more interesting exploration than scanning planets.

Mako was never broken, cutting it out of the game felt kind of cheap.  Mako was fine, the side quest planets SUCKED the generic bases that were the same on every planet SUCKED, and the driving over mountains for a weapon mode that you already had 20 of in your inventory SUCKED. And collecting 8 things on the planet just to have one of those worm things pop up directly under the mako instantly killing you and having to collect everything all over SUCKED.

The Mako was fine on all the main quest parts you used it just need a little tweaking on the aiming.

I miss everything about BW's initial vision of ME , including the Mako and exploration. ME2 was saved by the import system which is genius

Mako.

I think if they combined the two systems they would have a better game.

Speed up the scanning process to make it less tedious and mix it up with some Mako exploration and combat.

Well I have not read any replies so I will make it short and sweet.

Mako- prefer it, interesting concept, makes planets seem much larger

Planet scanning (ME2)- I'd have more fun stabbing my eyeballs out with a pencil than I had with this annoying, badly planned, lame java game based concept.

I have some mixed opinions.

Mako: Pain in the butt trying to navigate those mountains and avoid the thresher maws I never felt like dealing with in the valleys. Never knew until I had spent ten minutes driving what I had found. Never completed the side quest of finding everything and never saw the point of it. Very frustrating. Enjoyed seeing the other worlds, but I'm sure that took a while to flesh each one out and they still weren't but so realistic (Ie: ever notice the lack of trees and how there was usually no creatures on the planets).

Scanning: You lose the seeing of the worlds, but this time it felt like getting the minerals had a purpose in the game. You can choose what you need and if you want to continue scanning.

So overall, I prefer the scanning. Both are tedious but I prefer the lesser of two evils.

I for one preferred the mako. It was somewhat tedious, but it still a lot of fun occasionally. I had some memorable moments riding around in the mako, cresting a hill in a garden world and being blinded by the planets sun. I remember vividly landing on a planet next to klendagon and looking at the huge rift caused by some ancient "glancing blow." I scanned klendagon on ME2 and they didn't even bother to put the rift in, even though it was mentioned in the main story. none of the planets had personality or detail. Scanning felt a hell of a lot more tedious than riding around on the mako. Even if we were driving around in the same ridiculously hilly landscape in the mako, there were a few interesting maybe even awe-inspiring things to be seen. Scanning has added nothing to the game for me except a sore trigger finger. However, I don't think it has to be either mako or scanning. I would be ok with just a few detailed and interesting mako planets thrown in with scanning.

This. Some moments were memorable.

But the new "scanning"... meh... An Atari 2600 can be programmed to do it... or at least anyone else. But, man... NOT Shepard.

I actually liked the Mako alot, although I do like the planet scanning. Both have their pros and cons.

Pro - Mako

Hauling ass all over the planet and running over bad guys.

Con - Mako

Having to climb up huge mountain sides to get at something interesting.

Pro - Scanning

Don't have to make planetfall on worthless planets with no action

Con - Scanning

Scanning the planet :)

what if you were dropped in the Mako, to fight Batarians for a great volume of resources....like a proxy battle, like things that legit happened in human history, but sci fi-ed? If you had to fight wave after wave of baddies to get some huge payload of resources. Technically you aren't Alliance military anymore...and you all but live in the lawless terminus systems...what's to say you...I don't know, board someone else's mining freighter and steal the goods? Or if investigating a derelict ship you find tons of husks guarding a prothean alter, AND a bunch of resources?

in all honesty there needs to be tedium in resource gathering, you need to earn it...so that's why I think battling for resources in ME3 makes sense to me.

Space combat for resources would be sweet and easy to do.

I like the concept of scanning but it could be made more interesting, instead of only looking at the planet from afar and the elements being located on random spots on the globe, make it so you have to zoom in on a certain region and find it based on the info given on the planet, maybe theres resources in a particular mountain range or at the bottom of an ocean, you'd get to see the surface of the planets in more detail. Maybe include a short animation to tip us off as to how the probe actually works and of course make the bounty worth it so you dont spend too much time with it and get bored.

I miss the Mako.  Maybe in the third one they can have makocycles.

Made a poll to see if there's any sort of correlation between the platform on which you play Mass Effect to the method of resource gathering/planet exploration.

MAKO.

Planet scanning is BioWares ''index finger and mind numbing'' punishment for all those whom complained endlessly about the MAKO.

I did get that feeling.

I never could figure out what was so excruitating about driving around an alien world in my armoured space buggy.

The mako was horrible, but then so is scanning.

But is is supposed to be otherwise in the fist few hours of the game you would sweep through a couple of systems and have all the resources you need for everything at the start. It is designed so that you don't spend long getting the resources unless/until you really need them.

Scanning planets was not fun. Not at all. Sure driving up some of the mountains in the Mako sucked, but I preferred it to just scanning the planet. They should have made the driving more enjoyable. Improved the controls, put more resources on the planet, but not just rip it out of the game.

Mako by far.

Why? Because it's logical.

Commander Shepard would definitely go on missions in the Mako.

Commander Shepard would never in a million years do something so menial as scan planets and shoot probes at it. That's what a navigator/science team should be doing. The best solution I could come up with resource management is have a crew member on the Normandy do it and you have to do sidequests to make him/her do his/her job better and get you better materials for upgrades.

The Mako could have been tolerable if the terrain was actually something other then jagged rock painted differently, and climbing mountains? What a pain! Yes its the worst.

Scanning less so, but making it mandatory in order to get upgrades is a big nono, I cant see myself doing it every playthrough. What were they thinking?
Nothing says fun like keeping an eye on a graph while dragging the cursor over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. It makes your brain go numb, and i cant imagine the pain for console players.

Everytime I started to get tired of the scanning, I would think "well, at least I'm not doing driving the Mako".

That thought still keeps me going...
