i like the scanning only because i HATED driving over every ****in planet that for some reason was ALL MOUNTAINS!!! every friggan planet was huge towering mountains that while they were cool to look at were a PAIN cuz you either had to slowl crawl up it looking for a path that you could go up or drive completely around it and try to get up the other side.

It doesn't really matter, both are currently retarded - but I suppose that scanning is easier/cheaper to improve.



Problems with resource gathering are the same in both games:



1. No challenge. You can't really fail anything, as nothing opposes you - the main reason why both mako and scanning become tedious after about 5-10 minutes and till the rest of the game. Time, logic or reflex - some or all of these are needed.



2. Little reward - not enough motivation for gathering. In ME1 we got some money/xp (not enough to really bother, since you could get both in much more fun ways) plus the trinket collections, which is a nice idea in general, but implemented badly - with little background and no visual aesthetics: really, an ability to actually read the matriarchs writings or to see turian insignias on your room stand would be cool, not to mention some reward tech/info/quests for progressing those collections. In ME2 we have upgrades, which is nice, but you get enough resources for every upgrade in the game by harvesting only 3-4 clasters.What is needed - more different upgrades (and make them cost more), fun trinket collections with nice visual/info/quest/tech rewards, more options to dump resources into - sell them, gather for quests, convert into fuel/ammo etc.



3. No development. All harvesting is basically the same - when you did the 1st one, you'll just continue repeating it for the rest of the game. For example, some rare resource spots could require special techs to upgrade at 1st, with some changes to gathering mechanics as well - so that you actually feel progress. Some random or prescripted surprises/challenges would be cool too.



If done right, the mako gathering would be awesome, but I'd like to see at least a nicely done scanning minigame in ME3.

Mako was a novelty fun for exactly ONE planet drive through. Loved ME1, --hated-- resource gathering on Mako. Hell, hated everything to do with Mako: controls, areas, minerals that you had to climb iffing cliffs for, guh, disconnected quests to drive for.



I'm replaying mass effect 1 after my first couple of runs with ME2, and I constantly catch myself thinking just how much better the ME2 resource gathering/anomalies are implemented.



Now, I realize this isn't everyone's cup of tea. I can see how folks can be fond of the good old buggy, heck I can even see a few new missions using a land vehicle can be fun. I hope that's what the Hammerhead vehicle will be for :). But I shudder to think about the return of ME1 mechanic.



Just my opinion, not shoving it down anyone's throat :).

A refined Mako experience would beat the living hell out of scanning, scanning as it is trumps the mako as it was MOST of the time. That being said, I liked assaulting entrenched enemies from the Mako. If the "driving area" was scaled down to a working mission area with better pathing and more condensed points of interest (or, better yet, EDI just doing your damn scanning for you while you're on the ground piddling about).



I have mixed feelings about just showing up at the mission site. Sometimes, it's kind of neat, but most of times I feel like it just dulls the feeling that I'm actually assaulting an enemy base.

A good example is that Blue Suns mission arc. Yes, I KNOW I'm showing up and wrecking their crap, but in the same stroke, I park in their driveway, shoot some mercs to cross a hundred yards of terrain, bust into the base, and just start shooting. I have no turrets to contend with, no softening up a FAR superior force from afar with the Mako's main gun before having to close in to take out protected enemies, and I have no freedom in from where I come in to attack.

Either are a mixed bag, but I give scanning the edge. I just wish they'd fixed doing crap planetside instead of scrapping it altogether.

Because whining will make it better.

I liked the Mako, except for some planets which were not designed well. You were looking for all the minerals and some areas were just nearly impossible to ride over. And if you try to go around, you're always thinking "but I missed looking at such-and-such portion of the map" and it bugs. There could be an anomaly or a mineral deposit! And the Mako took a lot longer. Even if you had the system down, the length of time it took was kinda bull.



I'd like a Mako system where you can upgrade the sensors to increase their range, so you can avoid more bad terrain and it doesn't take as long. And in the Mako, it really felt like you were on an alien world. And all those nice vistas... In ME2, I really wanted to explore some of those beautiful backgrounds some more. And ME2's sidequests were more engaging.



Really what it comes down to is I'm selfish and want EVERYTHING! :D

The Mako was fine, it was the empty planets with their spikey landscapes that was the problem. Even with the landscape issues riding around in the Mako was a lot more interesting than watching a ball go around.

EA is paying the bills now so bioware has to do anything to cut cost.Its much cheaper to just have a planet spinning in front of you which doesnt require to much detail work and disc space while creating whole environments per planets can take months. EA has only been good at making sports games nothing else.

how about an option to look for random warehouses and we raid them lol. (renegade) or if found out if it was stolen property then give it to the alliance (paragon + money) hahaha.

Those in favor of scanning... how many of you are playing on PC?



Because on the XBOX 360, the scanning is painfully slow, even after upgrade. Some of you mentioned that scanning is quick and easy, and that it only took a grand total of an hour at best to scan enough resources for all upgrades. That is not the case for XBOX 360 version. It takes a very long to scan even one planet, and makes the scanning process very tedious.



I do agree that I hated those steep mountains with the Mako driving in ME1 and the copy-pasted enemy base locations though.

Haven't played ME2 for some time just because I have to scan the planet in the system I enter which takes too long. Though the game is better than the ME1 in terms of game play except for scanning which is irritating after you do that too many times. Don't know how it is on the XBOX 360 but it takes me 40-50 probes and 20 mins just to scan a planet beyond depleting it. It is quick to scan if you just go for some of the resources on each planet. I really hope Bioware had done a very long test to see how people react to it rather than just scan 1 or 2 planets and see how it feels.

Planet scanning is fine, but I don't see why they couldn't of just refined the Mako rather than entirely scrapping it. Rocking it in the Mako would of been ten times more fun than sitting around scanning planets (even if it was a pretty fast affair with a mouse). The only thing that could of been fixed would of been boosters strapped to it's back and more variety in the maps

I don't really understand this comparison. Planet scanning didn't replace the Mako, the Hammerhead expansion did. Planet scanning replaced the survey button while examIning planets/asteroids in ME1.

The problem with the Mako besides the Mako itself was the actual game concept. Why if you were just checking out a location would you drop the Mako on virtually the other side of the planet? This is where the shuttle makes more since. You could just land your shuttle just right outside the perimeter of a base or right at a mining location.



I think people also forget that ME1 did have planet scanning. Most of the planets in ME1 couldn't be landed on. You would tap on the planet and you would automatically get a resource or medallion and a description of the planet. Most were just barren planets. The Mako was great with planets like Noveria or Virmire but that was it.



The scanning can be made great if you tie it to money making. I should have the choice to sell excess minerals. I think it would be great if you could trade on Ilium just like you trade crude oil on Earth. That would actually make the mining worthwhile, especially if they were to restock the stores with clothing, art, foods, etc. that could go in your quarters or an apartment on the Citadel.



The scanning should probably not be tied to upgrades because again, you are forcing people to do that scanning and that could hurt replay for people who don't like scanning.



But it seems a simple fix:



Make scanning faster and map auto scan to the A button.



Place a monetary value on minerals and allow them to be traded for credit.



Restock all stores periodically to offer credit use incentive.
