From my other thread. Figured it would get lost, so decided to help it along.

pharos_gryphon wrote...

Personally, I just wish I could find more fanfic that wasn't simply romances and the like. People starting new storylines in Orlais, or political intrigue as a result of what all has been going on in Ferelden, that sort of thing. Though, I suppose that's more the realm of quests and the like built in the toolset. Anyone know of particularly well done of either sorts that they'd like to reccommend?

Tough call. Some element of romance is present in just about every piece of (fantasy) literature. It sort of depends on if you're after a fic that has no romantic overtones at all or if you can settle on something that contains romance as a story element but where love (and the like) isn't the basis of the book, so to speak.

From the sound of it pharos_gryphon, and I suppose Maria as well, are simply looking for a story where the plot isn't centered on the love of two or more characters or some soap opera love triangle type situation.

tjadis' Old Roads series (four parts, start with Waking Hours) is an original post-Blight story. It does have romance elements (and some smut), but past the first Alistair-centric chapter, it is a departure from the usual on FF.

What's going to make all this irrelevant is when they make the other games or put out more books on this series. It would be like writing a fanfic on what happened between Star Wars Episode 3 to Star Wars Episode 4. I guess you can claim it's one version but then how does one account for the actions taken when the series comes out? It's a reach but be prepared for total geeks to stomp you into the ground. I've seen it happen and it's...scary *hides in a corner*

EDIT:

If you do take something like this on be prepared to push every romantic notion out of your head. Banter between characters (male and female)  like sarcasm can be viewed as foreplay thus romantic. Personally I find stories that solely focus on the politics are dry. And the other thing is you can tell it from the view point of another country but I highly doubt you can't mention the romatic ties of the story. If a bard or minstrel were to retell the story they'd add the romance to enhance the tragedy if you get what I mean. Also one might want to look up the meaning of romance...

tallon1982,

Is there any perticular reason you're copy and pasting dictionary entries?

No, I was just show there's more to the meaning of romance than just the word love. It's not meant to offend anyone. If it's going to be taken as an offense then I'll just abstain from posting anymore.

Thanks for the FYI. Though, I'm sure that when pharos_gryphon asks for a fanfiction that isn't 'simply romance,' he's not objecting to all the ones written in Pourtugese or Rhaeto-Romanic.

Do you have an original, non-romantic fanfic you'd like to recommend?

Well if he wants another take on it one might want to consider writing it from an outsider's perspective like a soldier's account of the events. Like you write one chapter from a view point from a person in Lothering, another from a Dalish that survived the werewolf attacks you could even use the assistant keeper for that and so on. I haven't written one myself as I'm still fiddling with one at the moment but perhaps if each of us takes a major event and write it from that perspective it would be interesting an also non romantic.
