Call me crazy but neural shock is starting to interest me. It has a 3 second cooldown so it won't interfere with charging, it can lock someone out of battle for 12 seconds, and afterwards the enemy receives an accuracy debuff (not sure by how much though).

Still trying it out but it sounds promising.

Yes when I first got bonus talents I considered that and Energy Drain (didn't know reave affected shields.  reave also benefits from biotic cooldown reduction, does double damage to armor/barriers, etc lolol).  I didn't like it because the shock appears to break on damage but I guess that's balance.  Now that I'm more seasoned I'll check it out again.

I do like it so far. The 3s cooldown is huge, even 6s from reave was too much for me. A lot of it depends on this accuracy debuff I know nothing about though. It's also fairly limited since squad cryo ammo performs a similar function, but I'm already using it more than any other active bonus power I've picked up.

I like the possibilites it presents...

Defeat the enemy's defenses, Neural Shock him.  3s later, Charge another enemy, kill him and the guy next to him, retreat to the Neural Shocked enemy.

or

You could always use the Neural Shock victim as a spare shield battery.

Tons of stuff you could do with this guy.

I actually switched my bonus talent to barrier. I dont use it much but i do use when i fight ymirs or praetorians. Since those you fight behind cover. So i use it to be able to pop back up again asap instead of waiting for shields to recharge. 1 rank is enough imo though.

Thats how I used it as well, and for that it's a very good skill, bit long cooldown but almost as effective in some ways as adrenaline rush for the shooting from cover tactic. (7.8 sec with champ+biotic reduction upgrade)

ok the fact that this thread got pushed to page 2 hurts my heart. Between this and the Adept thread, this is the best reading on this particular forum.  Still chuggin my way through Insanity as a Vanguard... heh the playstyle's so much different than my Pet Sentinel that I might as well have bought a different game.

Ok so, started my very first insanity run and went ahead with Vanguard after reading/watching some of the vids.

Its alot of fun, and I don't mind the deaths from getting used to everything. That's fine. What really pisses me off though, is all the deaths caused by Charge acting weirdly, or at times simply not even going off because of some unseen terrain barrier the game believes exists.

For example, one that gets me all the time is charging to an enemy who is seperated by cover from the rest of the enemies, or raised above them, only to end up with my face in a wall behind the cover they were using, teleported ontop of them so the enemy ends up behind me, or underneath them entirely.

Another real pain is not being able to charge if you have your back to a wall. This gets me especially in tight areas like Thane's recruitment mission or Miranda's loyalty mission. I'll go in, 1 shot whoever, and be focused on trying to escape again and end up gunned down because I was too close to a wall. Ugh.

Yet another aggrevating glitch that causes me some deaths is when I charge an enemy, do the shotgun+melee combo, only to have my follow up shotgun blast completely miss because the enemey staggered into the wall. Then I get to die especially if it's a vanguard I charged.

Anyway, I'm having alot of fun, its just I die enough because of being reckless, or picking the wrong targets, since I am still on the learning curve, and these bugs/glitches/whatever are very frustrating!

This is not a bad idea either. Spend one point for a shield boost when the game forces you to play gears of war lite. Doesn't happen that often, but nice to have when it does. You also get enough spare points to pick up shockwave which is fun, although I rarely used it. I'm definitely sticking with neural shock though, adds a new dimension to charging tactics.

Funny enough, by now I can pretty much call when a glitch will happen and have learned to avoid them.  The "back to the wall" thing was tough at first, but you get used to knowing when you can and can't (tip: if you can't zoom with your weapon, you can't Charge...  something like 160 degrees of Chargeable angle).  If they are rapidly flanking you, go ahead and get off the wall to prepare your Charge.

Has anyone noticed the Frozen "Boss" Charge waypoint fail glitch?  Take Freezom's Progress.  Cryo Ammo the YMIR so he's frozen at like 1/25th his health, Charge and shatter him.  Can't beat the level.  Doesn't recognize him as dead.  I don't know how many times this has happened.

I see some people say that lowering the gfx might help with some of those glitches. I'm trying it myself now and I'm not sure if it works or not so far. But it I think it happens less often. I've also found that backing off a couple of feet helps to charge someone right in front of you. I know that aggravates me to no end when I hear, "I can't get a lock" from a person standing in front of me, usually about 0.5 seconds before I die.

Ps this monster of a thread should be stickied or something, so much good information to be found here for anyone having trouble with vanguards or just wanting some general game tips/mechanics explained.

How does the Eviscerator Shotgun fair against the other three? Is it better?

None of the shotguns are clearly "better" then the other, they are different.
Pick the one you enjoy the look/sound/feel of and go with that. You'll not be missing out or playing sub optimal. Couple of pages back I list each ones damage over a 2.5 second time frame with melee included. Take a look and you'll see the difference is too small to take real notice. They will all kill enemies in nearly the exact same time.

Edit : It's on page 15

It seems most people prefer the Scimitar, but I love the Evi.

I really ought to take all the important info we gathered and edit the OP for newer players.  16 pages is a lot to read.

Yeah I had a glitch in the Collectors ship where I charged to kill the husks, then accidentally went through the open door, skipping the Praetorian. Went through to the shuttle, only to find it turned the screen black and I couldn't board or proceed. (The menu still came up, but even the squad screen was black.)

Reloaded and made sure to beat the Praetorian before proceeding. Fixed it.

Although later while doing Thane's loyalty mission, I charged to the back of the level and picked them off from behind, from near the elevator. No problems there.

You can also Charge the Colossus from Kal Reeger's cover.

That's basically suicide, though.

There's a video floating around of someone trashing the Colossus this way on insanity... Personally I want whatever enhancement drug he's taking.

Yeah. That guy was insane. I tried that on HC, and was down really fast.

Charging the Colossus is a valid strat. By charging it, you mess up the enemy spawning system. So instead of facing 15+ geth you will only face around 6-8. The key to safe play is to immediately charge it then run for cover, don't try to shoot it. This will cause your teammates to follow (teleport). From there you use your squad to debuff the Colossus while you charge the geth stragglers.

Heck yeah it's valid. It's one of the Most Epic things I've seen in the game.

When I played that part I just charged across the map straight to the Colossus so I wouldn't have to deal with the Geth on the way. Is this what this guy did or did he charge at the Colossus and shotgun/melee it to death. One is far more impressive than the other :o
