No Thresher Maw?  I use it on him every time.  I want that Shotgun Research and take no chances on missing it.

Thresher Maw was #3.

I totally missed that somehow...  probably because I was still thinking about #1&2, "yeah, those chopper things do suck."

i really enjoy the samara recruitment boss fight, plenty of room and spread out enemies means i'm all over the place safely killing someone every 6s or so. one fight i hate is the zaeed loyalty fight, with the ymir and the bloody firey can things above and flamethrower enemies with stupid range. also the rooms too big to just park squaddies at the start and leave em, you get too far away when you charge the heavy and they come into the fight, dying really fast or mindlessly aggroing the ymir while the normals are still running around. oh yeah, did i say i dont like that fight?

What I like to do in that fight is park Miranda and Zaeed on the very first set of cover you run into on the left side of the room. At that point I pretty much solo everything that's not a flame-thrower. For those bastards I shoot out the shield from range with the pistol and have Miranda overload them for an instant explosion. I shoot down the fuel tanks the instant they spawn. Then we take down the YMIR together.

As far as heavy weapons go, I tend to take the Grenade Launcher with me at all times, unless i'm about to face a Preatorian, Threasher Maw or T-1000.

There's so many ammo crates around all the time it just seems like a waste otherwise.

Plus the Grenade Launcher is fantastic for shooting groups of 4+ with. Can just fire off a round switch back to the Scim and charge in to mop up.

I'm also on board with the grenade launcher now, just because its fun and useful outside of boss fights, and adds something to the Vanguard's arsenal. Cain is still a must on the thresher maw though.

As soon as I noticed that it could knock down enemies even with defenses active, I was sold.

I have just completed a pay through of the game on insane for the first time with the vanguard class I typically learn things fast though and have not died on any one mission in the game more than 5 times (usually I don't die at all I find the Vanguard completely overpowered and fun to play).  Here is what I have learned for some advance tips and uses of the vanguard:
1.) Don't be afraid to wait behind cover to to use some overloads or SMG to soften up enemies
2.) Look for charge targets in the back of a pack of enemies. Usually have cover nearby and you quickly dispatch the one you charged so now you have essentially flanked the group and 1/2 are focused on you behind your cover and the other half are focused on your allies.  From that position it is easy to just pick off targets one or two at a time with ease.
3.) Have a plan.  Look where you are charging and know where the cover spots are.
4.) Be creative with cover you can gain cover even if there is an enemy on the other side of you cover.  It can buy you the precious seconds for your charge to come up again
5.)If no enemy is in the back look for your charge target on the sides often there is a place for cover.
6.) NEVER charge into a middle of a group bigger than 3
7.) Soften named enemies up. Never strait charge one a harbringer will mess you up.
8.) Try out the Eviscerator especially in the beginning.  Being effective against armor is a huge plus. (I use this over claymore I feel like a have the power of a claymore with 3 shots before reload and can carry more rounds) Most enemies die in 1 shot and 1 melee some require 2 shots if I manage to miss the head shot but either way is very quick.  Can often take out 2-3 enemies in 1 charge.  (I picked up this gun off of Thisisme8 recomendation and have never looked back)
9.) You may be very in your face with most enemies but be careful with packs of husks, fenir mechs, vorgen(I think thats there name they looks like messed up dogs) they can melee you aswell and get you into locks where you cannot even charge out of it. I find it easier to take them out from ranged then just deal with the rest of the enemies.

This next part is for General Insanity runs.  I keep hearing my friends saying it is so hard and difficult and almost impossible but with these few tweeks to your game play you can easily be beating insanity with hardly any problems:
1.) Use hot keys.  You may say "ohh I have a pause button I can stop the combat anytime I want" however hotkeys increase the fluidity of battle and when your in an oh **** moment I can tell you that some one who has mastered hot keys will have a definite edge over someone with just a pause button.  I usually find people who don't use hot keys slow anyways in any game.  Also when I can clear a room with out pausing it makes me feel like more of a badass.
2.)Disable the ai use of ablities and you use them and hot key them.  You can use the more more effectively than they can and some of their moves can help you survive.  I cant remember how many time I had a Krogan charging me and a concussion blast from team mate saved me.  Remember hot key them.
3.) Memorize enemy spawns if you know more enemies come after you kill a certain amount position for them and don't be caught off guard.
4.) Know what weapons are good against what type of defenses (I know this is basic but using a SMG against armor can work but will almost result in a death against Krogan enemies).
5.) Play smart wait for your opportunity the ai's are predictable.  Melee enemies and Krogans almost always want to get in close so play around with that ai notion.
6.) Diversify you team so your team actually has a strategy.  ex. Vanguard : Bring Grunt (Almost never dies Concussive shot very useful for buying time for charge to come back up also takes some fire off me and can be in the enemies face as well good distration) and Mirana (extra hp as a Vanguard and overload what more do you want ohh wait warp too thanks ill take the overpowered girl) this is just one of the many strategies I employed there are others too.
7.) Know your class and what upgrade benefit you the most and go for them first.  In general going for heavy weave and defense upgrades is a solid choice for any class on insanity.  I would recommend saving and buy those two first out of the rest.

Ok so i am playing my Vanguard now and this is my first Insanity run. On Garrus' mission where you pick him up. Did Jacks Recruitment mission second upon Thisisme's recommendation and so i have the shield pen and stuff. Jack's mission for the record was a pain in the ass. Just wanted to say that. I died SOOOOO many times on that. Sometimes cause i couldn't kill crap fast enough with my SMG or cause i charged someone i thought was alone and then more guys spawned and wtfpwned me. So my question is when does Vanguard get strong? Is it after Garrus' recruitment when you start Grunts recruitment?

Also on the subject of Garrus' recruitment. Did any of you guys die a bunch of times when trying to close that last shutter the door on the right side? Where there's the Varren and Krogan and all the Vorcha in the big open room. Cause atm i'm stuck there getting close some times and then dying due to stupidity or getting krogan charged and not being able to run away lol. Any other advice you guys have for that room I'd appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Is this your first time playing as a vanguard, or just first time playing a vanguard on insanity? If it's your first time playing a vanguard, it might be a good idea to try a few missions on hardcore to get a feel for the class, rather jumping in at the deep end. Vanguards become powerful pretty much as soon as you have heavy charge and a couple of points into assault mastery and later Champion.

I'm not sure I understand why you would be using the SMG unless you are talking about shooting from cover. If you use it for when you charge you are just gimping yourself.

As for that last door. Kill the dog, kill the krogan, then hit the button. Takes a little while before new ones come. Use your squad to keep the vorcha from advancing too fast through the door by attacking them as they spawn etc.

First time with a Vanguard in general. Played an Infiltrator on hardcore. And using my SMG from cover yes. Though i have Heavy charge and am at the 2nd tier of Vanguard. So could just be getting used to it then i guess. I'm ok with the dying part as it's part of learning. Just was curious if others ran into the trouble on that part of the recruitment mission and if so was curious to the easiest way to get past it. Krogan my last few tries was my downfall. I shall keep plugging away and i'm sure i'll get it here soon. Thanks for the help,

Krogan/dog tactics I generally use are. Charge, shoot+melee a couple of times then run backwards while shooting some more. 9/10 I'll get to charge again before his charge connects to me and he's generally dead after the second charge. Dogs go down easier, one charge should be enough. Use it defensively as well when they have you cornered, tho it has a tendency to bug against them.

Although I hope you are past that part by now

Lol not past it yet but not cause I tried more and failed it was because i had been up way to late as it was and late nights plus trying to field website support calls this morning could have been bad. So I hit the hay. I'll be trying again when i get home tonight.

Are you using squad inferno ammo from Jacob or Grunt? It's a huge help early before you get your own ammo up to snuff.

Nah you can beat any mission with any squadmates. Just keep trying you will figure it out and feel good about it. Just use the pause feature often and take things slow. Warp is very strong vs Korgans (I know you know that, but sometimes you need a reminder after drying 100 times.)

On a different note, I notice there are no vids of Vangaurd vs 2x YMIR mechs. Some of the hardest parts of the game are fighting 2 of those Mechs. I would like to see how some of you pros handle them.

Zaeed and Miranda are a good team. Place Zaeed in a good spot, give him the sniper va. armor and AR vs. shields and let him go. Miranda, with Warp and Overload is a great on Archangel's mish because she can help strip armor and shields. I may have to replay that mission to see if I can find anything to help. I don't remember it too well as a Vanguard.

I would also recommend if you havn't done so, do Grunts mission before Garrus.  Grunt is imo a good combo with mirana, and you should read my wall of text above I pretty much put down what ever I learned starting my vangurd from scratch

That'd be cool if you could. It's just that final big room at my current lvl with Heavy Charge and tier 2 of Vanguard I'm just not doing something right. I will be trying again when i get home but if you find a vid of that or make one i would certainly be checking it out.

He cheats vanguards dont use snipers. lol.
I just use SMG for Shields pistol/shotgun for armor and spam the overload.  Trick is you need to get one down ASAP once it is 1v1 you can just circle around some tall cover and the mech cant even touch you

Ok, that's it. I've been reading this daily and updating my delicious bookmark with whatever page I'm on. Time to do some typing.

First time through I took my soldier on veteran. That was just... too easy. Then I stumbled upon this thread and, well, everything changed. After watching the first few videos (cause there only were a couple at that time) I figured I'd give it a shot. Seeing the vanguard videos before the game was released had already peaked my interest. So, I imported a lvl 60 from ME and fell head over heals in love with vanguard from my first charge. Poor little LOKI...

Ahhh, I remember getting Garrus. That room in particular. I actually had a blast and took my time closing the door (cause I kinda forgot about the little health bar with Garrus' name above it). I had done Mordin, Jack, Zaeed, and maybe one other recruitment mission previous, so it sounds like I was at about the same level you are at now. I was also using the Evi. I took the Krogan out by doing the good ol' charge>shoot it in the brain>melee thing. It wasn't a quick kill I remember, as I was still getting used to the class. The key is using charge as soon as it's ready to keep your shield up. I actually did the whole thing on my first try somehow. I had Miranda and Zaeed with me and used their powers quite a bit. It's all about hotkeys and being aware of your surroundings. Warp, CS and charge make pretty quick work of a charging Krogan. Another thing is to keep pausing and checking the radar. Knowing where the bad guys are is a very big help.

That particular mission was a big turning point for me, as I really started to get the hang of things. It seems like playing conservatively just doesn't work out so well as a vanguard. Taking a quick assesment of enemy placement, then charging the flanks is often more successful than not. Of course, that's not the case in EVERY situation, but you get the idea. This is now making me want to get FRAPS going... I'm just not so sure my machine can handle it.

Anyway, I'm now level 30 and still have a couple loyalty missions left before some more fun with collectors. Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all the contributors to this thread! Reading this is like crack and has REALLY helped me have an absolutely awesome time with my vanguard :)

(I hope that at least made some sense... I started it about three hours ago and the coffee only just started working...)
