I'm only going to keep an eye on that thread for rabbit channel. I would LOVE to hear what it is about my play that makes it "full of holes".

Because you're clearly memorized every single spawn point and pathing of every single enemy in the entire game. Clearly.

It isn't that hard really.

That takes about uh, 10 seconds a section, if that. How is that hole in a playstyle?

That was sarcasm, by the way. Stupid text not showing inflection.

The idiots saying Vanguard is unplayable are wrong. It definitely has the highest learning curve. Now whether it's the best class on a ranking scale is another matter entirely.

That wasn't me, that was BeyondFX.  I merely mentioned them, and then immediately regretted it since I don't want this forum to devolve into the nonsense that is general.

I totally thought you were going to say, "it was the one-armed man!"

I'm just kidding too, all the posts that have been questionable in here have generally been completely ignored.   A big thanks to everyone for that.

BTW, Patch v1.01 is up and mentions vehicle controls...  :o

I'm just about done my Vanguard run on Insanity. My first and best character in Mass Effect 1 was a Vanguard, and my first character in Mass Effect 2 was that character imported. However I just didn't get the hang of it; I was pretty much doing everything wrong. I thought that Shockwave was the best ability evAr and that Charge was only for the suicidal. I thought that Shotguns sucked since I couldn't snipe with them anymore so I used the SMG almost exclusively. I must have died a hundred times, and this was on Veteran difficulty. Yeah, I was brutal. My formerly level 60 badass that ripped through ME1 insanity was getting filled in by anyone who looked at him sideways.

So after I finally finished the game with that character, I rolled a Soldier on Insanity and got through it pretty cleanly. I learned some more general tricks to utilize on future play-throughs and I got a better feel for the battlefields and the combat system. Now I've imported my Vanguard again (with the default face this time), set the difficulty to Insanity, and I've been enjoying almost every minute of it. There were a few parts that gave me trouble; Geth Colossus, Zaeed's mission's final fight, and the Collector platforms (damn Charge won't go through!) come to mind. These are the exception. Most fights I just charge in with my Evi or Scimitar and cut the baddies a new one. It's aggressive, it's risky, and it's the most fun I've ever had playing either of the Mass Effect games. There's nothing more rewarding than winning a large scale battle by flying all over the map and blowing enemies away -- all while in the red. I love it.

Here's my build:

10 Inferno Ammo
10 Squad Cryo Ammo (damnit Garrus stop switching to AP!)
10 Heavy Charge
10 Destroyer (contemplating a switch to Champion, not really sure yet)
10 Area Reave
1 Shockwave (for spanking Husks)

I almost always take Garrus and Miranda along with me. Garrus has been my favourite character from the moment I met him, and he continues his badassery  throughout ME2. He gives me a few laughs here and there, and just feels like Shepard's "best friend". You've been through hell and back together; why not make it twice?  Miranda is... well, hot. And her Warp/Overload combination makes her a great utility teammate; her squad health bonus helps out too. Also,  I'm weird in that I absolutely HAVE to bring my romantic interest along with me otherwise it takes away from the RPG atmosphere. Plus her little conflict with Cerberus at the end of the game is a nice touch .

At the moment I'm just using the generic N7 armor. I haven't really fiddled around with various armor combinations yet because I'm not sure what works best. Anyone have any advice? On a side note, I'll never wear a helmet. I hate that the helmets don't come off during conversations, I just look like a Power Ranger during most convos.

Right now I just finished everyone's Loyalty missions, Legion's excluded. I'm going to mop up the rest of the star clusters and then I'll jump into the IFF mission. I'll probably beat the game by tomorrow.

I'd just like to let you guys know that I decided to give my Vanguard another shot because of this thread. All of the insightful advice, crazy helpful videos, and intelligent discussion in this thread got me re-energized for another crack at the game with my favourite class. Now I'm having tons of fun charging around the battlefield and helping to correct people who think that a Vanguard is gimped on Insanity.

You guys are awesome at what you do, keep up the great work.

I would just like to add that i've just joined the "I owned the Colossus" club. It took me like 5 or so deaths before i got it down but i did the charge the colossus and solo it thing to finish Tali's recruitment mission. It was awesome and I feel very satisfied and accomplished.

I didn't find colossus hard at all. Granted, I'm on my 3rd play on Hardcore, not insanity. I don't have a tactic, either. first game I was a biotic, second infiltrator, both times I didn't die once. With Colossus, I know I moved up along the right side and just chilled behind the wall. Having widow helped, and rocket launcher with 20 rounds also. I dunno, though. He seemed pretty easy.

Currently playing vanguard, and was having a bit of trouble. I'm at work now, so can't try out the tactics, but I'm pretty anxious to get home so I can give it a go. Cheers and thanks for the great thread.

Great post, Stoik.  Looks like another happy customer.  I feel the same way about funnest playthrough on either Mass Effect.  So much awesomeness.

In regards to the armor, if you melee half as much as the rest of us, get the melee shoulder pads.  Aside from that, since you already beat it, you're good enough to wear what looks best to you.

Hey guys thanks for the awesome info and videos in this thread. I just finished my second insanity run and i wouldn't have even tried it if not for this thread. After the bashing it got everywhere else i had just about giving up hope for this class. Well i tried to roll a new soldier and i just wasn't the same, back to the vanguard...

finally beat the 3 crate defending YMIRS whoever said the geth pulse rifle was crap.....didnt use it properly, i absolutly obliterated the mechs with that, the evi, and then tali and miranda's powers....if i had a capture card( being on an xbox) id of put a vid up of it...by my standards...it was fast, for you guys, slow, but definatly much faster, the geth rifle is highly underrated...upgrades for the win, sure, its not as good against armour as the vindicator, but sheer rate of fire, ammo capacity, and shield decimation MORE than make up for it

That would probably be me saying it's not worth using.
I have no doubt that you can have success with the Geth rifle, that doesn't change the fact that the Tempest and Vindicator is superior to it as they both have a higher base damage (vindicator by a lot). Remember the Geth only gets a 35% boost to shields compared to the vindicators 25%, and it's less then the tempests 50%. Doesn't mean you can't use it, just means that it won't do as much damage as fast as other weapons. (It could actually be that the Geth Rifle is better on the Xbox of course, that I wouldn't know as I have the pc version.)

I have more ammo for people still against squad cryo. It seems that when an enemy is effected by biotics or frozen the AI gets amazing accuracy on that enemy and tears it apart. This is on top of the double damage boost of course. I could be wrong but it just seems the AI gets smarter when shooting at disabled enemies. Can anyone confirm this?

I put together a Vanguard vs Husks video since its something no one has done yet for some reason. I did not use the standard Area Reave/Incinerate Blast followed by Shockwave/Pull Field, because thats just too easy :o

Rumination88(sp) has one thats pretty funny against the scion+husk battle.

Pretty similar to the way I did that part tho I used the scimitar/Vindicator.

Edit: Yours looked pretty good there RamenC, couldn't watch it all as I'm at work now
