I finished testing the Eviscerator on my Vanguard. The lower spread is actually really good for your squaddies, but for a Vanguard? Bleh.

Its slow as molasses and doesn't burst down enemies unless you aim at their heads. I'm having a harder time melee/shoot/melee/shoot and stunlocking enemies compared to the Scimitar. And melee/shoot/duck under cover just isn't as effective as the Claymore.

The new shotgun isn't half bad, actually. I'd say it's better than the Katana. I'm not at the points where I can get the Scimitar or the Claymore yet on this playthrough, but the shotgun is pretty reliable.

If you get bored sometime and have a save right before you do the heretic station, try it with AP ammo and see if you notice any significant difference. I only noticed a tiny one. Suppose the difference is larger the more damage your weapon does.

Just tried, tiny difference, definitely not worth giving up Area Reave imho.
I'll just stick with Inferno Rounds..

here is 47 seconds video, my team died, but I finished the last two hunters to revive them. Once again, no tactics, just charge them and kill them..doable on Insanity, despite the fact that i missed a couple of rounds..
I love the new shotgun..best shotgun so far imho.

Not sure if I'm feeling the new shotgun. It shoots slowly to the point where you might as well use the Claymore. You can almost fit two melees in between shots. Too soon to say though, it does seem to one shot chumps often and the damage boost to armor could be worthwhile.

I'm really loving the shoot melee shoot melee you can do with the Scimitar and Vindicator though. Probably the safest way to play Vanguard.

I can definately see it being better than the Katana early on. Especially since most people are gonna be doing Mordin's recruit mission first, which is just packed full of armor/health enemies.

Thanks a lot Kronner, I was going mental about the AP ammo issue, as I've seen others like it and couldn't figure out why.

That was some crazy frame rate in the new video, but still fun.

just saw it
the original FRAPS 1GB .avi is like that too..will try to turn on affinity for both cpu cores and see how that works (though loading times suck with 2 cores)

Well, here is the last video from the heretic station - just for fun. I used drones on that freakishly big geth prime to get his attention away from me and then just enjoyed the kill :)

Framerate is ok (seems like 1 core affinity causes it to go twice as fast! )

The new shotgun is fun. Makes me wonder if the Claymore is still worth it.

same here. I love the Claymore but the new shotty is probably more useful..
Gonna try it on collectors and then decide.

Anyone tried it on them yet?

Well, I did some more missions with the new Eviscerator...  it really needs a nickname since it's kind of a bother to spell.  Anyway, wasn't happy with it until after getting the 2/5 Damage which unlocks the +50% vs. shields.  It was all it needed to sell me.  At least, when compared to the Katana on my new low level Vanguard.

So, I've got Heavy Charge and 3 lvl's of the Passive VG skill (one day I should learn the name...  I think It's Assault or something) using Cerberus Armor and switching back and forth from AP to Incendiary, both at lvl 1.  By the way, Cerb armor isn't that bad...  +10% shields and health is nice at the beginning of the game...

After getting the +50% shield damage researched and 2/5 damage bonus, I was able to 1 shot mercs as long as I had a decent headshot lined up.  That's good.  I'm pretty sure that's on par with the Katana.  Mostly, however, it's a shot and a melee.  Still easy.  Especially when they're dancing around on fire.

I noticed a good amount of distance on it too.  We're still talking about a paltry few feet, but it's definitely better than the other shotties...  by a few feet.

Where I noticed this thing really shined was vs. the Krogans and Vorcha, but that's obvious.  Vorcha 1 shots left and right.  If I can coordinate with my squad, it's 2 shots and some melee for a Krogan.  That's awesome that early in the game.  Granted, with a more laid back Vanguard it could be 1 shot, but I'm talking about a single Warp from Miranda right before I charge.

I have to say though that this shotgun pushed me to close in and try to take a few enemies from cover instead of Charging as much, just to test the distance.  There doesn't seem to be much difference in AP and Inferno as well, so I wouldn't waste the bonus on something so close.  All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.  I'm not a big numbers crunching guy, but it stacks up in my book pretty well.  I personally will still stick to the Scim for speed and the Claymore AP combo for burst damage, but this makes getting there a bit easier.

Note that I only compare this to the Katana.

Now for the important part.  I move to nickname this gun the "Evi."

Just saw it.  Definitely good.  Glad to see it stacks up well vs. Geth.

I'm about a mission away from Horizon (get there later tonight) and I really want to test it out on the Collectors.  If anyone has a save right before the the Collector ship or last mission, tell us how it stacks up.

Edit:  Wrong planet name.

OP, what's your opinion of the new shotgun? According to the stats, its damage is ~150, which is pretty close to the Claymore. It also picks up more ammo per heatsink and is better at range. Should Vanguards start getting Assault Rifle training and stick to the Eviscerator?

I wrote a low level summary of it above.  Just so you know, I am by no means the best Vanguard player.  There are several really smart contributors to this post who I've learned a lot from.  Kurupt87, Rumination888, Kronner, and Sinosleep come to mind.

Quick question to the VG players on the PC, do you use the shotgun 'rebalance' mod/.ini tweak?

I do not, it is not a very good mod imho, when you can one-shot-kill any ordinary enemy on Insanity, the gun does not need to be made more powerful.

I havent touched the mod, but I believe any increase in damage to the Scimitar or Claymore just makes the Vanguard OP. The Vanguard needed a boost early on against armored enemies(can't count how many times I died to flamethrowing vorcha in Mordin's mission just because the katana failed to 1-shot them...) and I think they got it in the form of the Eviscerator.

Forgot to post this earlier today. Vanguard on the collector ship, after doing all that testing decided to go ahead and do the damn mission, lol.

Shotguns are extremely underrated, but just look at some of the vids posted on this thread.  I personally think they are fine.

Nice video.  I've thought long and hard about using the Collector Beam vs. those Scions, but I can't bring myself to not use the Cain vs. the Preatorian.  Argh!

I tested Evi (since no one disagreed, I will call her such) against the Katana on Horizon just a bit ago, and not only does Evi win out vs. armor, but also vs. Barriers.  Seems like my whole gripe earlier was simply because I didn't have the Shield Penetration upgrade.  I think it officially beats the Katana in every aspect except Thermal Clip capacity.

Cool, I'll avoid that mod then.

As for the evi, the description just says it's good against armour. So is it like the Incisor, the opposite to the rest of the weapons in it's category?

No offense, but I didn't ask just you. I pm'ed a few people and tried it out myself.

I especially like the shotgun on my soldier. They don't generally get as close to enemies as a vanguard does, so the extra range is highly welcome. It's also the only shotgun that can intrinsically handle all three defense types, leaving your bonus talent open for something other than AP ammo.

Damage is fairly close to the Claymore, and it has a few other perks as well, making me wonder if it's better to take a different weapon training. Anyone else think it's not worth it to take the claymore anymore?

Still no opinions on Claymore vs. Eviscerator?

Is Eviscerator + Sniper or Assault Rifle > Claymore?

Unless the DLC is free, I won't be getting it so I have no way of testing it. All I know is from all the testing I did on the collector ship, none of the defensive bonus powers seemed worth it. I tried all of them except for fortification (don't really understand why it's even in the game cause from the tooltip it appears to do the exact same thing as barrier except it doesn't get universal cool down bonuses) and on the collector ship at least none of them lasted long enough to be of any benefit. They would last until a harbinger showed up, at which point he would blast them to oblivion before I could charge and refill them. Since I don't need the extra protection against normal mobs, and it's not enough against big bads like harbingers I don't think they are worth it at all.
