I never said scimitar was the best shotgun. I said it needs some love. For me it is the most fun to use and most effective. I never claimed it was the best. It is Kronner that claims that Eviscerator and Claymore are superior to scimitar and that is what I refute. Reread the posts, you need to be directing your posts at kronner and not me.

Nah, I simply disagree with your list of "advantages". And Scimitar does not need more love, I think it is actually the most favourite shotgun in this thread (counting people who prefer it). Scimitar is just as effective as any other shotgun, but not for reasons you listed.

Yup, if you had read up on the topic, you'd find long debates about shotguns, Scimitar has gotten much love :)

-It is better against barriers than any other shotgun

Disagree. I bet you anything Claymore strips barrier faster (does a lot more damage, multiplier does not make up for the damage gap), same goes for Evi.

Sabresandiego wrote...
-It allows you to fire multiple rounds without reloading

So what? If enemy (or enemies) is (are) dead, you do not have to fire multiple shots.

Sabresandiego wrote...
-It is a great weapon for stripping defenses

So is any other weapon. If I wanted to strip defenses, I would not play Vanguard, but Sentinel, Engineer or Adept.

Sabresandiego wrote...

So is Claymore, Evi or Katana.

Sabresandiego wrote...
-Its a great weapon for setting people on fire with incendiary rounds (it only takes 1 pellet)

Any weapon with Inferno rounds is great for setting organics on fire.

Sabresandiego wrote...
-The amount of lead it puts out is unrivaled

Agree here, but it is not an advantage as far as I am concerned.

Sabresandiego wrote...
-The gun is more versatile than the other shotguns

Disagree. Evi is more versatile.

Scimitar is great weapon, but in most situations Claymore/Evi wins from my personal experience.

Right here you state that the scimitar is inferior to the claymore/evi in most situations. I stand by all the points I made about the scimitar on the top of this page because they are true. I never said it was the best shotgun, even though it is my favorite and the best for me. Others may prefer another shotgun and Im fine with that.

For me, personally (hence the "from my personal experience"), Evi and Claymore are better and more effective, but Scimitar can be just as good for someone else. Oh, and Evi is, imho, more versatile because it has better range (and smallest pellets spread) than any other shotgun.

edit: as for your points, you can of course stand by them, in which case we will have to agree to disagree.

I also think the Evi is superior, but it also takes the most focus to do well with. You can get the reload trick in muscle memory and the Scimitar is simple to use, but the Evi requires you to be on point almost all the time.

You really cant take the potshots with other shotguns that you can with the scimitar. This alone make it more versatile since you can kill enemies with a sliver of health, remove a sliver of barrier, debuff the defenses of multiple targets faster than you can with other shotguns, etc...

It doesnt have the raw killing power of the evi or the claymore, what it has is versatility and I stand by all my footnotes about the gun. Nowhere do I say its better, it is different and suits my playstyle more than the other guns.

I don't play this way usually, but I found taking pot shots at range with the Evi is effective because of the high accuracy. You can completely strip an enemies defenses from further than you would think when you are behind cover.

To me the Scimitar and the Claymore are almost like blunt instruments compared to the Evi. To get the same/or better effectiveness out of it I have to play more presicely/better. I really enjoy that aspect of the gun. It does also work surprisingly well for taking out defenses at fairly long range. But if I feel like being more relaxed I go with the Scimitar although unlike most the other videos posted, I always use melee when in close to speed things up.

Fraps users, when you record do you record at 30 frames? I don't know why I didn't mention this earlier, but I've made my last couple of vids at 60 fps instead. The game runs at 60, and when you record at 30 the frame rate drops in kind. I decided to try recording at 60 fps instead and noticed the counter usually doesn't drop below the 45-50 fps range which really helps out. If you are having slow down issues and think your computer should be able to handle using fraps try it out.

I lilke the Scim best because the other gun's shots are so much more valuable and less forgiving. If you never miss a shot then it's not the best. However I prefer having the safety of a bunch of ammo so if I miss I can get back on the horse and shot again.

I am afraid to even use the claymore because if I miss I will just be caught with my pants down. The Evi is okay but I find it's clip to small for my liking.

I had it at 30, hopefully changing to it 60 helps me out.

Just put up a new video.

ME2 - Painseeker is a Team Player

Shepard and Squadmates are all built for AoE.  Just a bunch of Charging, Throwing, and Inferno Grenades.  On what I consider the toughest part of Thane's recruitment.

That is just... awesome. The Vanguard has so much versatility. I don't think my brain could handle playing like that. I'd probably have a stroke or something. You make it look so effortless

I think I prefer just straight up shooting and punching, like the headshot clip I posted the other day. On that note, after recording that and having so much fun I decided to tackle the entirety of Haestrom with the same attitude. Probably my favourite mission in the whole game.

Fighting Geth - Vanguard Style

46 & 2!

Automatic win.

I feel like the main difference between claymore users and non claymore users are Claymore users seem to be more comfortable with the possibility of spending multiple moments almost dead.

But then again our beards are thicker.

Hah! Awesome. Ænima is one of my favourite albums of all time.

sinosleep, good call. I've always just left it at 30fps too. My system can handle it for the most part, but it runs at 60 without fraps recording. You just might be on to something here.

I also have something rather...different in the works. Soon...

I used to hold mine down, but at 40. But on all videos post about 3/4ths of the way through my adept vids I just let it run unrestricted. Found it worked the best. I felt like my computer was having to work harder to hold the framerate down than to just let it fluctuate.

Same here Gatsby. It seems when you set it below the 60 fps that the game is supposed to run at it slows the game down to match, whereas if you let it run wild then when your system can handle 60 it handles 60 and when it can't it drops. Fortunately my rig is good enough where it doesn't ever drop too low.

Something I've been curious about shotguns: Has anyone tried comparing ADS shotgun headshots vs non-ads shotgun headshots? Seems to me like theres a chance taking the brief moment to zoom with a weapon like the evi might mean the difference between 6 and 8 pellets going in an enemies head.

I'm thinking about this because my soldier kills with shotguns pretty often and I'm wondering if I could've one shotted more often using a zoom.

About FPS, I was recording at 30 fps and I cant believe how much that screws up my gameplay. Fraps 30fps cant be accurate because its choppy as hell and ruins my aim. So a couple days ago I set fraps to 60 fps and the problem was fixed. Now I shoot in 60 fps, but when I process the video I process it at 30fps.

Alright, I need to get this out of my system. I absolutely love the Vanguard. I haven't had this much fun playing a game in the history of ever.

Now, the Vanguard isn't the easiest class to play. It's not for everyone. To quote thisisme8 in the OP: "the road to High Risk, High Reward is paved with the Replay button...". This is an ode to that statement.

To the guys the figured the Vanguard out and spent who knows how much time testing and debating the ins and outs. To thisisme8 for starting this thread and keeping it updated. For 61 pages (at the time of this writing) of useful information and civil conversation. For all the awesome videos. Thank you! We are in your debt.

And to all those that think the Vanguard is "so overpowered a ten year old could beat Insanity on first play through", this one's for you.

Dying like a Vanguard

What kind of compression software are you using to alter your FPS? I'm using VirtualDub with the xvid mpeg-4 encoder and it lets me pick a bitrate but not a frames per second.

I use anyvideoconverter to convert my 60fps movies to 30 fps.
