Alright, I need to get this out of my system. I absolutely love the Vanguard. I haven't had this much fun playing a game in the history of ever.

Now, the Vanguard isn't the easiest class to play. It's not for everyone. To quote thisisme8 in the OP: "the road to High Risk, High Reward is paved with the Replay button...". This is an ode to that statement.

To the guys the figured the Vanguard out and spent who knows how much time testing and debating the ins and outs. To thisisme8 for starting this thread and keeping it updated. For 61 pages (at the time of this writing) of useful information and civil conversation. For all the awesome videos. Thank you! We are in your debt.

And to all those that think the Vanguard is "so overpowered a ten year old could beat Insanity on first play through", this one's for you.

Dying like a Vanguard

That was so good.  I was laughing the whole time...  I could see each on coming too (all out of experience).  The great thing about that video is it proves to me I'm not alone in the world.  Geth Destroyers more than any other Pyro type suck.  Charge the Colossus and just pray you can kill him before he turns the .50 cal on.  You can actually survive that if you time a Medi-gel-Charge and a lot of luck.  Anyway, great video.  Ending is is also awesome.

I tried changing my Fraps setting to 60 fps, but it seemed to have made the game stutter and slow down more often. Not sure what the deal is, but I might need a CPU upgrade.

However, since I was already in the game and had the suicide mission loaded I tried it again. This time I crushed my old time, for a total time of 3:07 and took no damage. Apparently if you kill the last group fast enough, reinforcements don't come, which is a big help when going for speed while killing everyone that shows up. I also brought Jack for shockwave instead of Miranda for warp. Who needs warp explosions when you have grenade explosions :o

I'm secretly replacing my old suicide run video with this one.

How does the Arc Launcher fit the Vanguard? I haven't had a chance to play since yesterday, but I'm curious now.

Seems to be the destroyer of Geth.

For you guys that like numbers, how much time does the Claymore trick saves? I don't like using it because it makes you playing look ugly.

It's 1.5 or there abouts with the trick and 2.5 ish without it. So saves you a full second

Thanks guys! I couldn't resist making that video. I like to try and find humour in horrible situations.

Geth Destroyers are evil incarnate. I was outright livid by the end of all that. In the video where I actually win, when I popped that first one with Overload right in my face I thought I was toast. Heh. There's a little lesson, popping them does much less damage than their flamethrower. And they die.

In the first clip I actually killed the Colossus after he opened up with the .50 cal for a bit. I couldn't believe it! Of course, you saw what happened immediately after...

The end clip had me in tears. I was laughing and crying. I think I'm going to stay away from Haestrom for a while...

My god. You handle the Evi like it's an extension of your body. Absolutely masterful.

Thanks, I don't think I could do that well with any other shotgun. That Metroid song is making me salivate for the new one coming out. Hopefully Team Ninja doesn't screw it up.

Great vid RamsenC, Evi is a beast of a gun!

I wonder how much extra time would a Cain blast save (used just after you open the 4th tube)..I'd give it a try but I am not gonna be able to play until Friday, so maybe then :)

Thats a great run Ramsen. Heavy weapons really improve speed on that run, you should cain the big middle group and the last group to see if you can get under 3.

Sadly I'd have to get the heavy weapon leg armor for 2 shots and that means going to a save before the omega relay. Plus I can't play right now, someone else try it though :o

edit: That charge time may be an issue though, not sure how long you can hang out of cover waiting on the Cain.

Im gonna try for a sub 3 minute run on my new vanguard when I get to the omega4 relay. I haven't decided if I'm going to use heavy weapons or not. Usually I never use heavy weapons on my speed runs but I was really impressed with that grenade launcher and tali drone substitution for warp explosions. 2 Cain shots could possibly allow a 2:45 run.

I think a real speed run (as in, just hit the necessary number of tubes, skip some enemies etc) could be completed in just over 2:20.

Ya but skipping enemies is lame. You could honestly just charge from enemy to enemy, hit the buttons, and after 50 tries make it in like 2 minutes without even killing more than a few guys.

I love the grenade launcher, I always use it when I run into large groups. Feels much more useful than saving it for bosses that I can just tear apart with the viper. Theres not enough heavy weapon use in general I feel.

I agree, but it would still be a speed run, at the very least fighting the very last group of enemies in that part of the game is totally pointless and we all do it just for fun :D
And sometimes endless spamming of enemies (take the geth colosus fight for example) is lame too.

I agree Ramsen, your grenade launcher use was excellent although the reason I dont use them in my speed runs is I feel like its "skipping" content. Especially the Cain.

True, but in a lot of ways warp explosions = skipping content. Press three buttons and a bunch of fools are dead.

Warp explosions are very powerful, I agree. The difference is that warp explosions are unlimited, where as heavy weapon ammo is quite limited and you cant use it in every mission abundantly.

Thats why warp explosions are so crazy. It's like a heavy weapon with unlimited ammo.

About heavy weapons, doesn't each one have its own ammo pool? I'm not sure about this, but if true you can switch to another heavy weapon if you run out of ammo and really need some power.

Heavy weapons share the same ammo pool,  you get different # of ammos depend on the weapon.

Ah ok good to have that cleared up. I usually had some when I needed it so I never checked on that.
