Playing my second time through the game as a Vanguard (this time on Hardcore) I have no idea how you guys do it. There are certain missions that all I do is Die over and over again. I try to be smart with my charges but it often leads to me getting murdered from all sides. If I try to be super conservative I eventually get whittled down as me and my squad are unable to kill off all the hordes that keep coming and coming and coming. Horizon right now is a nightmare for me
I play on PC. I guess it's growing pains
Is there a particular part that you're having trouble with?

Are you on PC or Xbox? Vanguard is a class that is very friendly towards twitch gamers, and having a mouse to aim with is a huge advantage over an Xbox control.
I play on PC. I guess it's growing pains
I recommend removing mouse acceleration from the game, and reading this guide or my guide. Also, use cover.

I've read you excellent guide several times, thank you for writing it. My big problem is occasionally finding appropriate cover after a kill and using Charge defensively (not clear to me how to do that).

On some occasions using charge defensively won't work. Charge, heading back to cover, charge, cover etc will not kill them fast enough before they advance fast enough to flank you. In this case it is better to charge forward and aggressively, always forward. What you will also notice at times the very far back of an enemy advance tends to have very nice cover as well.
Use different strategies for different situations. Also, having a knowledge of the number of spawns/enemies subconsciously helps a lot. Sometimes you just have to die to learn.
EDIT: Another thing too, something I learnt from the videos. If you watch the playstyles of these super-vanguards, they utilise squad powers very well, even using shockwave to stagger enemies to give you precious seconds to find cover if you end up at a bad spot, or using throw/warp/pull to finish one guy off while you kill the one behind him etc.

Kronners excellent new collector platform video made me decide to try a speed run using my own style of vanguard play. I managed to get a 1:22 run on the collector platform at level 30 NG+ Insanity. Ill link it as soon as youtube is finished processing.
Also I want to point out that scimitar isnt as weak as it seems in my video, enemies just have better upgrades in early and midgame level 30 NG+ Insanity than they do in regular Insanity which makes them more difficult to kill.
Edit: Well I just beat my time by a good 6 seconds, down to 1:16 before my other video even processed. I am guessing a nearly flawless run would get sub 1:10 on Insanity+ and sub 1:00 may be possible on normal insanity.
Well, my vid is not a speed run, I made it to demonstrate good strategy for that fight, because some guys in general chat forum were arguing this was the hardest part of the game..
For speed run you have to this to get the best time (IMHO of course):
Kill the first three Collectors without allowing Harbinger to appear (2 Drones, 1 Guardian)
Kill the first Scion before the platform with 3 Drones arrives
Kill the 2 Drones, damage Harbinger so it has only a bit of armor left (finish him off when second Scion is dead, or if you are lucky your squad will have killed it already)
Kill the second Scion before the last platform arrives
And finally kill the last group without allowing Harbinger to appear
It is possible to do, but you need to be lucky (no charge bugs), use Warp explosion to quickly kill the last group (maybe doable without it too) and use armor killer against the Scions (Viper is great, Heavy Pistol is ok).
But honestly, saving 10-30 seconds in this fight is not worth losing the great feeling of blasting everyone from melee range

So I made a video that was meant to be only about Legion cutscenes during IFF mission but since I recorded the last room fight, it's in the video too. Should make anyone who thinks they're not so good at being a vanguard feel a lot better about themselves heh... at least it should be good for the laughs. In this video (the fight starts around 0:57), you can see me murdering the floor, the ceiling and the air respectively - not to mention, headbutting with husks. My mouse is a cheap notebook one that gets stuck and gives me nightmares but I know it's not the only one to be blamed here ^^ Oh well, at least I didn't die.

Speed runs kill enjoyment and promote unnecessary competition, especially in single player games.
In my opinion, of course.
Speed runs arent forced on anybody, they create competition for those who enjoy it and want to participate. The main problem with speed runs in the game is that not everybody is at the same level with the same amount of upgrades during specific missions creating discrepencies in performance. A good example is that times will always be slower on level 30 NG+ Insanity until you have all of your upgrades than they would on standard insanity where you start at level 1.

I usually enjoy watching speed runs and although my Vanguards are not suited for ultra-speed, I also enjoy going through missions at decent pace. I agree somewhat about NG+ Insanity vs. regular Insanity, but the difference is not that big (depends on level obviously), but after Horizon, all my NG+ playthroughs were the same or at least very close to regular Insanity, since you can have all important upgrades just after that. (biotic damage is useless to me, shotguns 3/5 is not that far from 5/5 - for Claymore/Evi at least and damage protection 4/5 + hard shields is good enough), that and most speed runs have a bit of luck in them (no charge bugs; FRAPS lowers my framerate to 25-30 FPS despite the fact that I have decent rig, sometimes it is no big deal, but other times it just flat out sucks; sometimes squadmates die, sometimes they kill Harbinger like nothing etc.).

I hear you, when not recording I play the game at 1920 x 1080 but if I record at that res my FPS goes under 30 which is basically unplayable. I am able to record at 1280 x 720 and get over 30fps though so that is nice. Charge bugs are my biggest peeve about this game as they occur way too frequently.

Anyone have any tips for charging the colossus on Haestrom during Tali's recruitment ? I loaded an old save i had to try it out after seeing the vids in the op but every time i charge it will shoot one plasma blast then switch to the machine gun and rip me apart.

It seems random. Sometimes he opens up with the 50cal, sometimes not. If he does, you're as good as dead. Just keep trying. For a laugh, check out Dying like a Vanguard in my sig. It kills us all

Enjoyed all your vids Nex as well as Sinosleep's, thisisme8's and all the other vanguard vids.
Been trying this for over an hour now , im nearly at the point where im just going to cain it lol but i will keep trying i guess.
Does it have to do with when you charge ? i have tried waiting a bit, i have tried charging straight away, i have tried waiting till he shoots the plasma cannon and i have tried it when he is doing nothing, all seems to end up the same, he shoots one plasma blast at me after i charge and then he opens up with the machine gun from hell. I thought maybe it was a proximity thing after you charge so i tried being right on top of him and also being a little bit away but both ways ended with me hit the reload button

I charge right at the beginning and then I basically just pick a side of the Colossus and try to stay on that side as much as possible. If you're lucky, he won't open up with his .50 cal. If you're not, well...
In my last two runs combined it's taken me 4 tries to down 2 Colossus'. Died to the machine gun once each time.
On another note, some specific upgrades would greatly help you out against the Colossus. Namely Hard Shields and Biotic Cooldown, and some +Shotgun damage upgrades too. I acquired all of these immediately after Horizon and I tackled this mission easily before I hit up the Collector Ship.
But yea, it's all luck. Keep at it.

I really don't know. I've tried all sorts of approaches but as far as I can tell it seems to be random(ish). For example, the first clip in the dying video: he switched to the 50cal when he was just about dead. I have no idea what triggers it (if anything). Anyone else have an idea?

I didn't think to lower my resolution when recording, I might have to try that. My FPS is always around 20-25 and dips even lower which is frustrated as hell. I wouldn't say it's unplayable, but it definitely makes things harder. Pretty much can't chain Evi head shots when the frame rate bogs down without some luck
