Up until fairly recently, all the female gamers had to always play male characters - because game developers didn't make female characters to play (and they wondered why so few females played games).

But, were all those females forced to play male characters now by definition butch? HELL NO! Probably because most females aren't as sexually confused as many males (*cough* OP *cough*). :)

I think the therapy required here is that SHOOTERS need to be taught how to play RPGs without thinking they're playing themselves - then they won't have to worry about being bi-curious, only pixel-curious.

I think the answer to this question is actually pretty simple, and that is there's more than one way of playing the game. One way is to get really into it, and imagine that you 'are' the main character, naturally if you always imagine that you 'are' the character you're going to want the character to romance characters that you yourself would romance, thats the way I play, probably a majority of peope do, its a good way to play. But theres another perfectly reasonable way to play, and that is simply to think of it more like a movie, the character you're controlling isn't you its just another character. Just like its very easy for female players to play male characters in various games and romance other girls, because its kind've like they're making a movie where they're getting their favorite guy and girl together. So it is in Mass Effect, lots of males play as FemShep because FemShep is more attractive, has a better voice, or any number of other reasons. They can get FemShep together with any guy, or girl, that they feel would be best for that particular playthrough, because for them its just like telling the movie director of a movie you're watching 'put those two together, I want them to be together', and then you get to watch the whole romance play out just the way you like it. And really, who wouldn't like to be able to do that sometimes? :) .

It's called sexual frustration. Men who are not satisfied with their love life (or do not have one) enjoy controlling a female character in games, engaging in heterosexual romance, feeling that they can only do that if they have complete control over the woman participant.

There are countless excuses, for instance that they don't want to look at their male characters during the game, not realising that with that they just prove that they are looking at the game differently, pursuing sexual experiences in it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging, none of us are flawless and this isn't such a big deal for a teenager. However, if you're no longer a teenage boy or you're in a relationship, maybe even married and still prefer playing female characters, then you should probably stop and look at this warning sign and think about what's wrong.

On the other hand, playing with a randomly thought up "tough guy" or "pretty boy" can be almost as bad - again, not for a teenager, obviously -, because it means you're not at peace with your looks or who you are.

I'll admit that there are people that are like that, but to say that men who play as femshep (and essentially women who play as maleshep) are all sexually frustrated is wrong. There way too many people who do this to get lumped into one category, society is too complex for that. There are many reasons for someone to play as the opposite gender (and pursue a heterosexual relationship for that character if they choose to do so). In regards to ME, some men find femshep a better fit for the lead role than maleshep. Others prefer femsheps VA to malesheps. There are those like me who play as both genders to experience all the story arcs the game has to offer. I do not get any perverse pleasure playing as a female. The main reason I pursue any of the LI's, male and female, is that they allow me to get to know those squadmates little bit better. I hated the love scenes in ME1, I thought that was pretty lame that BW put those in there (but that's just my opinion, I know there are those who liked them and I got nothing against those guys). The only LI I've done so far in ME2 is Garrus, which I thought was funny and cute (Oops, I said cute. Does that make me gay? Image IPB). But I digress. As for the OP, you need to understand that not everyone projects themselves as the main character. Even though I have a Shepard with my first name and tried to make him look like me, I do not think of him as me and what he does isn't always what I would do. That applies to all of my sheps, male and female.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is we all have different reasons for playing the game the way we do. Even if you do not understand another persons reasons, you should at least respect those reasons and not jump to conclusions as to why they play the game like that.

It's a video game people. I don't know how anyone actually translates playing a video game character as being a extension of them for real. Some of you have some serious mental issues if you can't separate fantasy from reality. I play as femshep cause it looks better. It's just eye candy to me. As I mentioned earlier being that this is a rpg 3rd person the disconnect is pretty obvious unlike a FPS where you are moving and interacting from that point of view.

This topic is kinda gay. But the OP did raise a point that will undoubtedly be debated by philosophers for thousands of years. Is it gay to play as a woman and be scrogged by a guy? Or is it sexy because it is still a sexy (hopefully) woman being scrogged?

I leave you with this question gentlemen. Just make sure the history books mention that I am the one who discovered this paradox.

It's funny the way you can spot teenagers on the internet in less than a paragraph, don't you think?

They might have good ideas, they might write as if they've ever opened a book that didn't start with "Face", but you can just...pick out their perspective and remember putting it aside.

It's kind of neat.

LOLBUMPED

I haven't played a female shepard yet, but when I do make on in the near future, I'd probably have her romance Thane. I don't dream of shoving mine up him or anything like that, but I find his character qualities admirable and I just think he'd be a good companion for my character.

Yeah, I just noticed that. I can't believe nobody mentioned that earlier in the thread, it would have been THE perfect response.
