I can think of a few issues with the first one while dealing with quests that you may have started but not finished, so if I was doing it I probably would be doing the middle option. Assuming that your decisions actually matter to a significant degree, of course. If they don't they could always do the time tested method of asking "Hey, you remember that time where you did that thing? Yeah, I forgot exactly what you did to resolve said thing, could you remind me?"
Finish DA:O first before starting Awakening or not? (No spoilers please)

That's interesting. I had thought you would be using the epilogue save for importing. If you haven't finished the game, I suppose it just gives you whatever the Orlesian Warden's story is for any quests you haven't finished? Or does it only import stats and not quest decisions? Or does it not matter?

You don't need to finish Origins to play Awakening. It's ideal if you do, and you can still import your character. If your character is too low a level you'll get a level bump and some fancy new gear (cha-ching). You'd be higher level and with better gear if you finished Origins, but you'll be equipped enough to tackle Awakening.
So, Awakenings is not an actual expansion of Origins, it is a stand-alone?

No, it is an expansion which won't work without Origins. You can start a new game on Awakening any time you want, although with a new Origin, available just for Awakening. You can also export a save game from Origins to Awakening, pretty much like Baldur's Gate worked, or at least, that's how I think it works.

Wait, that means they have to have enough content to let you reach the level cap correct?...
Considering the fact you had to do pretty much EVERYTHING in the original game to get to the cap, then in this game there should be a lot of side quests right? Even if the story in the side quests isn't so great, I would be happy with an arena or something- a reason to KEEP playing, that sadly the first game lacked. (as in no locked areas, minus destroyed ones and such)

OK, let us say that I have Origins installed and I then install Awakening.
Are you saying I can start a new game where I am able to travel all the areas of Ferelden and Amaranthine in the same game?
Or, if I have a saved game in Origins before the Final Battle is completed, I can still travel to all areas of Ferelden and Amaranthine?
And, from the saved Origins game, I can use all my characters in Awakening?
I would like a response from someone at Bioware on this also, if they are willing to clarify this.
All I am hearing is I can import my main character into Awakening and start a new game.
That is not an expansion.

Time-wise Awakening is like years after the events in Dragon Age origins, so no, it's NOT like you just use the map, go to Awakening, do things, then come back to Origins and things in origins change based on what happened in Awakening. It's a stand-alone thing that is unlike the other DLC for origins. Therefore, it's prob better to finish origins first so you don't find out spoilers in awakening. As for using 'all my characters' i think only one companion is going to be the same in awakening. All the rest are not going to be there. I agree, it shouldn't really be marked as an expansion, but as a separate campaign game that plays on origins.

@jkiller2,
Thank you.
Yes, Bioware should remove the "expansion" label and perhaps call it "an exciting new adventure" or something.
