Hmmm. Looked at the linked article. It didn't hurt. Must not be true, then.

Are you serious?  The team mates were the primary focus of the game and they were certainly less shallow than they were in ME1.

I mean it was stil the same writers...I think you are just drinking the haterade here.

I agree with the OP and 'akimb0 who speak the truth.

As for the Fanboy Bully Squad isn't it past your bed time, grumpy babies!!!

You Fanboy Bully Squad are so predictible and are like so much like rabid dogs. I mean you guys must be up 24 hours a day because once someone dares to have a negative review of your beloved ME 2, two minutes later there are like half a dozen or more posts harassing and trying to bully people into silence.  Seriously guys you need to step away from the computer and take a Vallium and 2 Prozac and then you'll be in fair discussion mood and agree that 'EVERYONE' has the right to their own opinion. Good or Bad.:D

I could have done without the addition of "ammo" to the game; that whole system really doesn't make much sense and seems like it was put in as a desperate attempt to make the game... shooterier? Also didn't enjoy the whole cover-and-shoot-mechanic very much...

However, the characters are a lot deeper in this game and the story is great if you take it for what it is: A lead-in for the third game. I already can't wait to unite the galaxy in one final push to end the Reaper threat forever; it'll be awesome to see the Geth flying side by side with the Quarians, the resurgent Rachnai and clan Urdnot, Alliance and Turians and all the rest. I love Mass Effect 2 for what it is and can look past it's flaws... and I still enjoy the first one as well, despite it's flaws. Just got done with my ninth playthrough, actually.

That may be true, but the problem I had with the story wasn't that it wasn't good(the characters in ME2 were a lot more defined and intresting then in ME1, and story wasn't all that bad), but it lacked the cohesion the first one had.  It lacked an indentifable face of the enemy, and the enemy lacked any sort of personality because of it.  The story felt more like a checklist then a story.  Did I get that guy?  yep.  Did i do her loyalty quest? check.

I think we should have started with more of the characters and then picked up others by doing quests dealing with the main story, rather then going through a whole mission for the express purpose of getting one character.  Loyalty quests were nice though, good for fleshing out the charater.

Edit: note the 'I think', the 'problem I had'.  Its all opinion folks.Image IPB

I agree, still mass effect 2 is a very good game.

The story could have been better with one single antagonist like Saren from ME1, but I think Bioware overestimated it's audience by thinking everyone would realize that the enemy has always been the Reapers. Just like Saren, the Collectors are just front men for them. They could have had more personality, but I was fine with how they were presented considering who they really were.

So the opinion of some random guy with a gamefaqs account is the truth, eh? Why is he wasting his time reviewing video games when he could be answering questions like what religion is "right" and whether it was the egg or the chicken that came first?

I don't know how you can call this fair when it states only negative view points about the game, and offers nothing that he liked. It's totally biased with a negative slant. An objective review would've given his pros and cons about the game. Why'd he rate it 6 out of 10 is the real mystery. I would've suspected he'd give it 2 out of 10 after reading his review.

I love Mass Effect 2, but i did dislike the scanning mechanic, only because the control scheme is obnoxious with a mouse (haven't played ME 2 on 360).

Aside from that, I disagreed with pretty much everything else he said. I love the combat and cover system, loved the characters and plot, and overall thought it was a worthy sequel to ME 1.

Can't wait for ME 3.

Personally I feel the review is accurate. Mass Effect 2 was inferior in many, many ways to ME1. The ridiculously poor story, among other things, creates a very unsatisfying game.

I couldn't agree more, ME2's sidequests and character development are vastly inferior to ME1's cut and paste uncharted planets with generic enemy bases.

ME2 is effectively a game made up of about 25 -30 hours of 1 hour side quests. There is enough main plot for approximately 4 hours of game play. The 'story' of Mass Effect 2 can not compare in any way, shape or form to the story of Mass Effect 1. It is inferior in every way.

As for the uncharted planets, no they weren't great, but Bioware's response - remove them and and mako and a lot of the RPG elements and instead give us a linear, limited, smaller game with pretty graphics and cliched squad mates. They've effectively created a game for young teenagers that isn't suitable for young teenagers.

ME2 was streamlined, but for the most part the whole inventory system was re-done. You can still pick and choose which weapons your crew can carry, however it's kind of pointless considering that there is no bonus to choosing a different weapon. When you upgrade an AR for example, you upgrade all three choices. So all three will do the exact amount of damage. The only difference is that one gun may carry a little more ammo or fire more RPS than another. There needs to be more VARIETY of weapons, not necessarily more weapons.

I disagree... my 2 cent AR analysis (for example)...

quote...

NINJ4 R4BBID wrote...

All the weapons in ME2 are extremely different (granted there is the lack of variety we could use more)...

Collector Assault Rifle (no spread, high recoil, medicore ammo capacity)
Geth Pulse Rifle (high fire rate, high ammo capacity, medicore fire power)
M-76 Revenant (high fire power, high ammo capacity, high spread/ recoil)
etc...

There is variety (would'nt hurt to have more)... variety is more meaningful than number crunching (HMWA VII / VIII / IX / X)!

"Fair"? Hardly. He's comparing it to what he likes, not what the game was designed to be.

The biggest problems against the game are people thinking "My character". Bioware pointed out it's not the player's character, the player merely controls it. Until reviewers realise this, these reviews are anything but fair.

Did you even read the review? It's more than fair. It's one of the few I've seen so far which actually mention the downsides to the game. I won't bother arguing with you, since you're just a fanboy, so you won't accept anything about the game being bad even when it's true.

Yes, because people whining, complaining, and trolling up these forums about Mass Effect 2 is "new"

You're right, we all should forget the fun we had with Mass Effect 2 so far and start hating the game because some internet review says so. I always do things like that, because I have no opinion of my own.

"We"? Speak for yourself. I've not had much fun so far. I'm just grinding my way through the boring fights, dull characters and contrived story line simply because it's a sequal to a game I actually liked.

So the OP chose a poor topic title. Doesn't change the fact that the review actually includes the bad parts of the game, whether objective or subjective which most reviews handily gloss over or neglect to mention at all.

I think the review is a little harsh but it has alot of valid points. The game while good NOT great was fun - but highly overrated. And planet scaning has to be the worst idea ever EPIC FAIL!!
