I can't see any good reason for a non-idiotic Shepard to ever take Morinth. Everyone seems to think that Samara only works with a Paragon Shepard, but I found that my Renegade actually had more in common with her than my Paragon. A Renegade Shep would actually be kind of sympathetic with Samara's "by any means necessary" approach to things (much more so than a Paragon, anyway - who does NOT believe that "the ends justify the means").

If you want to recruit Morinth because you want the Dominate power, then do it. Just don't try to justify it with some kind of in-game logic, because the story just doesn't support it. Even a Shepard who HATED Samara would be hard-pressed to take Morinth over her. Even if you play Shepard as completely amoral, Samara is just more stable than Morinth... more predictable. Plus, she's a member of a highly-disciplined monastic order with an unquestionable devotion to duty. Even if you take the whole "murder factor" out of the equation, Morinth is still an undisciplined, hedonistic lunatic, with delusions of being some kind of "artist." Any hardened military man with Shepard's command experience would probably hate Morinth out of simple principle after speaking with her for 5 minutes.

Even if neither character had ever performed an unjust killing, choosing Morinth over Samara would be akin to a veteran military officer choosing to go into a firestorm with Jim Morrison at his side rather than John Rambo.

If you DO figure the murders in, choosing Morinth gets even harder. The Renegade option in Mass Effect allows you to play Shepard convincingly as a "take no s**t" badass, but not as a truly EVIL person. Morinth is EVIL. She believes that what she is makes it okay for her to hunt and kill other sapient beings for no reason other than her own pleasure. She doesn't have to kill... ever. She is choosing murder as a preferable alternative to celibacy. Anyone who thinks that the pursuit of their own pleasure empowers them with the right to freely kill others is EVIL. It's all good and well to sit and contemplate "how futile it is to seek an objective definition of 'good' or 'evil,'" but a willingness to not kill others for personal pleasure is pretty much the foundation of civilized thought.

Oh, as far as Jack goes... that's a whole other kettle of fish. I will say, however, that the biggest issue I have with Jack is why Shepard would be willing to recruit her in the first place. Once you get Jack to open up a bit, her situation becomes quite a bit more complicated though. To me, the biggest difference between Jack and Morinth is that most of the killing Jack has done (though admittedly not all) was either in self defense or out of a reason that she perceived as being self-defense. The rest of it was "business" - killing as a part of survival and/or mercenary work. Morinth's killing is out of pleasure. Jack is a killer who has murdered. Morinth is a murderer who occasionally kills out of self-preservation - so that she can continue to live as a murderer.

Personally, I think that the post-ending "romance" with Morinth is the game's version of a Darwin Award presentation.

A serious reason: A heavily renegade Shepard would do alot of things that would push Samara's "kill them now for great justice!" buttons. It may not so much be about picking Morinth as about not having to watch your back around Samara, while still having the super biotic powers on tap.

A not so serious reason: Death sex fetish.

But you'd still end up with the crazy murderer who might very well try to kill you (or your crew), or just bolt from the all-important mission :P

Dude. Death. Sex.

You know what would make this whole Morinth thing moot, if there was some brilliant Salarian geneticist I knew who could alter the genetic code of an asari and remove a potentially harmful defect. Man that would be really helpful, but where the hell would I find one of those?

Well I wonder about the village too. It seems very out of character from all the other stuff Morinth has done. My guess is A) it's from told Samara's viewpoint, and we all know a Justicar sees things rarely out of objectiveness but their code, so I'm not sure it's entirely accurate; B) Maybe Morinth was younger, and experimenting with ways of "expressing" herself (ugh huh).

I didn't see it as out of character - she uses and kills people, while occasionally shedding crocodile tears. In an isolated village, she was able to manipulate and kill on a larger scale.

If you choose morinth, then reload the save and choose Samara, do you still get dominate? As for why I would seriously choose Morinth, I really can't fathom. She is a predator, and you are her prey.

If your Shepard is evil and Samara survives she will obviously come after you when her service is done. Morinth isn't a threat to you unless you sleep with her, so it makes perfect sense imo (from an evil point of view anyway).

And what's to say that once the Collectors are gone, Morinth will just leave? Or try to kill Shepard? Hell, she might just find a way to escape anytime if she believes that Shepard will, after the mission, put a stop to her nasty habits. And if she's not a threat, then Samara is not a threat, since they're equally strong, so you cannot say that Morinth is less of a threat than Samara. At least with Samara you will know that she'll try to kill. You'll know, and be able to prepare.

Once Morinth realizes that Shepard won't sleep with her, she'll probably leave, is my guess. Leave, or try force herself on him. Why stay around if there's no chance of getting lucky with Shepard?

Samaras code forces her to attack you, wheres Morinth got no reason to try to kill you other than sleeping with you. And as far as i know it looks like she needs your consent to do so otherwise she wouldn't seduce people to bed them.

From my point of view, as the player, I definitely want to choose Morinth in the confrontation between her and Samara, but I cannot come up with any in-game reason to justiy that choice.

On the one hand, you have a very power and loyal Asari Justicar who has sworn to obey your command. On the other hand you have a very powerful and unpredictable sex murderer who clearly cannot be trusted. Why on earth would you make that choice? I cannot come up with anything that doesn't turn my Shepard into a stupid, naive idiot. It would be okay I you could actually play Shepard as being extremely stupid and naive and incompetent, but since you can't, that doesn't feel right.

Can anyone come up with a good in-game reason that will justify choosing Morinth? A reason that a smart Shepard can use.

There really isn't one. Even a full renegade shep is pragmatic and want cold hard decisions for the best of his team. No reason he'd take a psycopathic killer addicted to draining the life of anything it finds interesting.

Some might play the renegade Shep as the evil Shep who just does bad choices for kicks and giggles.

Best I can do is play the game a few times, and just choose that choice, just because its a new choice, not a smart one.

Ya know I think you do? I did choose morinth first out of curiosity before reloading and choosing Samara. I'm at work, but I'm am almost sure that it is one of my special power choices. Only reason I remember is I panic'd at first and had to go to my squad menu to make sure I hadn't accidentally loaded up a game with Morinth as my choice, nope I have Samara, yet still have dominate as a special power choice.

My renegade Shep chose Morinth because Samara was an unknown because of her strict and unyielding code, and would very likely come to have issues with his way of doing business. Morinth is a known, and very powerful, quantity.

I've seen the argument raised a few times about choosing Morinth that to do so would be offing an adversary early, but to me it always seemed an odd one. Enemy or no, Samara is predictable due to her ethics and oath, whereas Morinth isn't so bound and harder to manipulate. I mean, if you were really worried about Samara killing you once mission ends, wouldn't a smart Shepard just order her to be the rearguard at some point... by herself? "Stay here and defend Samara while these specialists deal with this or that on ahead. It's for the greater good" Or heck, just as you enter the base, could have left her at the door, and never came back to get her on your way out before it blew. It's cold and malicious, but still. I'd rather a predictable, controllable enemy over an unpredictable manipulative one any day. Also, there's always the risk of Morinth seducing and killing other crew members. Not good. >.<!

Morinth might be powerful, but is a total unknown with zero reason to do anything for you. She really has no reason to even be on that ship, other than maybe being bored and thinking about how wonderful it would be to suck the life out of some tasty one of a kind handpicked individuals who were chosen among trillions to save the galaxy.

Kind of like, thanks Shep!, all your crew is so tasy, and you saved me the trouble of scouring the galaxy looking for them. Fish in a barrel:)

many reasons with ingame logic,

1 (Assuming you are renegade) Samara has stated that after her mission with you is ended if you have done or forced her to do anything against her oath she'd kill you. Picking Morinth kinda is a way of watching your own back

2. If your Shep fits the "Do whatever it takes to get the job done" archetype than having someone onboard with Mind Domination abilities can prove quite useful. She's just as powerful as Samara if not more. Also I find that Reave isn't as useful in the final mission as Dominate is.

3. You are resistant to here mind control so you yourself have nothing to worry about, though your crew does, however if something were to happen you'd be able to do something about it.

4. Something Morinth brings up later onboard the ship. She may have been misjudged at it seems she was looking for someone strong enough to make it through the mating ritual, Shepherd being a most likely candidate. Ardat Yakshi are powerful, imagine what would happen if one were to have offspring especially if Shep was a powerful biotic him/herself.
