Well, I listen to symphonic and goth metal, but that's not quite the same. Regardless of how you may feel about porn, and we obviously feel differently about it (e.g. porn contributes to the spread of STDs among the workers and behaviors that contribute to STDs, so saying it doesn't destroy health is not correct, and that doesn't even address snuff films), it's still viewed as a negative on someone's resume by a substantial percentage of people.Statulos wrote...
Porn does not kill people; porn does not destroy your health and porn says nothing about you as human being. If someone judges you considering that you watch porn, I would not want to imagine what they´d say if they knew I listen to Death Metal.
The first part is packed with some of the most judgemental statements I have seen in ages: defining a person and even worse, a professional equating it with his/her tastes is directly disgusting. Regarding your reasons of it being unhealty, I still don´t get it: I mean, what does syphilis has to do with porn? The same as speed to bacon?
The workers in the porn industry are exposed to a lot more STDs, so it is riskier for them. The HIV infection rate in workers in the porn industry is substantially higher than the average population. That's not being judgmental--it's just the way it is. That's a basic medical fact--the more partners you have, the more risk you have for STDs. Some porn encourages all sorts of behaviors that put people at risk for STDs. Reports of abuse of women in particular in the industry and tremendous drug abuse (not just occasional use) is well documented. It's not innocuous in that regard, and the abuse of women in particular is what really bothers me. You mentioned that porn doesn't cause death, which is not 100% accurate--HIV deaths and snuff films (a variant of porn) prove otherwise. I would hope that snuff was a show and not the real thing. I suspect that some of the really nasty stuff is filming outright sexual abuse, torture, and murder, however. Extreme example? Yes. I understand it's supposed to be enjoyable--I get that lots of people like it or it wouldn't be the number 1 net industry, but that doesn't mean it comes without a heavy price for some.
It may not bother you at all, but it does bother a lot of other people. That is the reality of things. Whether people like that or not, or think it's fair or not, does not erase the fact that it's reality. People equate behavior with character. If someone tells lies, even occasionally, they're going to get judged as a liar, rightly or wrongly. If some news report came out saying some doctor had 86,900 porn files on his or her computer, you might not think it was a big deal. However, a lot of people would, and they would stop coming to see that doctor because they would freak out and think that doctor was a pervert. He or she could be the greatest medical savior of the universe, but that mistrust would still be there in the minds of many. That's the point I'm trying to make. People have to trust doctors with their health and sometimes their very lives. They need to have confidence in that doctor's ability. Anything that decreases that trust puts a wall up between provider and patient, and makes it much, much harder to work around, if it can be worked around at all.Statulos wrote...
When I need to a doctor I don´t care if he/she likes gore films, drinks absinthe on weekends or reads Thomas Hobbes on a daily basis. All the above and profesionalism are as related as previosly stated speed and bacon.
I view it as a continuum of severity. It's not usually an issue that's brought up in normal conversation.Statulos wrote...
I also have to admit that the relation between snuff and porn is surprising to say the least. Definetly, many people arround your comunity have a real attitude issue. Good to know you can bear it but still...
Fine, just keep it out of my games.Statulos wrote...
On the other hand, the part of porn being or not necessary is irrelevant: it´s a kind of material that is out there, pretty much like any novel; and make use and enjoyement of it. You don´t, fine; you do, fine too.
I don't download and listen to songs about those subjects. After reading accounts of mass murder among the Kurds in Iraq and Jews in the holocaust, and working in a children's hospital where I unfortunately saw children who were victims of all sorts of horrendous abuse, all that kind of music does is make me depressed and angry at the people who could perpetrate such horrendous crimes.Statulos wrote....
And no, Goth is tolerable compared to music that adresses topics such as mass murder, molestation, torture and so on. If this is tolerable and not porn, the hypocrisy is even more disgusting.
In any case, all that was simply to say "I don't need sex in my game, I can't buy games that would have extremely graphic depictions of sex, regardless of the type. My kids come in and out of my room so I can't always prevent them from seeing inappropriate content. It's something that could, in very rare instances, have an effect on my job, if not from legal issues, from social pressure. Keep them tame in the official games, and if people want more, they can make their own mods for that sort of thing, as has already been done for DA."
As for threads getting shut down, if they're getting real heated and people are getting nasty, I think the moderators are right to come in and shut it down per forum rules, regardless of the subject matter. That's not an insult to any group. In fact, it should be viewed as a mark of respect that the moderators don't allow people to trash the topic.
