if I don't use strategy and my buff and skills I get ****ted by a pack of wolves...damn powerful wolves.:/
Another arguement against level scale...it shouldn't take a party of 4 14ths, 2-3 hits each to bring down one wolf, all the while they are biting through metal plate like it wasn't there :/
I can kill a dragon but...

True, its strange that I can kill an Elite Boss yet when I am surrounded by more than 5 normal mobs I am screwed.

It all just feels so articficial :/.. I certainly think it takes away more from the feel of the combat than it adds. I know it's done to make it more of a challenge... but surely Bio could have dealt with it better.... say after a certain level particularly low mobs no longer spawn in favour of higher level ones, or at least JUSTIFIABLY tougher mobs.... wolves that strong, just for the sake of a hard fight, is just pretty ****** poor.

The best thing to do when you are surrounded is to CC them, if you are indoors then fallback (I call it a tactical retreat) into a closed space where you fight them one by one (like how the Spartans did it in 300). Or go around a corridor to get out of an Archer's or Mage's line of sight.

oh yeah.. don't get me wrong.. i CAN kill them..... but only if I go all out on strategy, spells and skills the same way I would for an elite......... I just find it too artificial........
It's a very entertaining game, but there is a boat load wrong with it... and most of the stuff are things Bioware SHOULD have learned by now.. they've been doing it long enough. :<

Level scaling of any form is crap. Welcome to the sad lazy method for creating an artificial challenge.

Bioware took an easy way out. Instead of making level scaling believable (such as different types of monsters spawning depending on your level), they simply jacked up the stats and levels of existing ones. Pretty sad for a company that has been developing this game for several years, especially considering bugs and poor balance.
Why are we fighting the arch demon? Just enlist those thugs wandering around denerim and you wouldn't even need to play the game.

A tactical retreat is the best method! Remember the motto: We are not retreating we are advancing in a different direction.

My main chara got caught off guard and surrounded by 5 werewolves and 2-3 blight wolves (I often set party members on Hold, because they crowd the screen chasing after me). He held them off just fine while I figured out how to move my companions through the maze of trees to go to his aid... lost about 8% of his health fighting the mob alone.
So I don't know why your party is dying to 5 wolves.

There are encounter types that, instead of scaling, should just be replaced at higher levels.

Yes, the Darkspawn can be color-coded for strength.
Pinkspawn, Whitespawn, Greenspawn, Bluespawn, Redspawn, Blackspawn, Silverspawn, Goldspawn, Kryptonitespawn...

It's actually more of a retrograde movement than any sort of retreat.

Please try the mod linked to in my signature. Trying to remove level scaling. Very keen on any feedback!

Yes, the wolves are very nasty and I don't like the way they can jump on you, it's silly that you can't do anything except get eaten.

Actually Dog and Morrigan are great against the wolves for their AoE stuns.

A pack of wolves can take down a grizzly. Sue, the wolf encounter is difficult, but saying "I can kill this therefore I should be able to kill these other things' is a stupid argument.

I hate how Emissarrys can block you from using Poltices

What I hate is when you go to make breakfast, and you pour yourself a bowl of cereal, and then you open the fridge and realize your roommate finished the milk. Then you're stuck with a bowl of dry cereal, going, "What am I going to put on this, water?!" That's what I hate.

It depends on your party make-up really. Crowd control and AOE is pretty important in situations like these.

I can kill a dragon if I don't let my guard down. I can kill a wolf if I don't let my guard down.
I get killed by dragons if I let my guard down. I get killed by wolves if I let my guard down.
Answer: Stop letting your guard down. You never know what will kill you in the end. Someone could put a needle in your food.

Wolves are one of the hardest encounters in the game. I hate that all animals have that maul attack.
