I mean North Americans. How do you watch TV without killing yourself? I've watched a few episodes of Deadliest Catch from the American Discovery Channel. My God! Advertisements everywhere! A sponsored 'highscore list', "This program is sponsered by <random corporation>", company logos everytime the map shows up and more I can't recall at the moment. And this is just Discovery. Channels like MTV, Fox and whatever there's available over there, got to be worse.

No matter where you look, there are ads. How do you stand it? I rarely watch TV, but when I do, I can at most watch an hour before the ads start to get to me. I get pissed that I have to suffer that crap, just to watch a TV show.. That contains more ads!

We've been programmed to not mind the advertisements.

Hah! You haven't seen Italian TV, where you have a rather higher chance to hit the commercials when you turn the TV on rather than the program. In average, a 1 hour long program (from 7PM to 8 PM), has 4 commercial breaks, the first three lasting averagely 6 minutes and a half, the last one 10 minutes. So yeah, strictly speaking, it's half an hour of program, half an hour of commercials.

A standard 2 hours movie usually lasts from 9PM to 12AM, which means 1 hours of commercial breaks.

Italian TV is pretty much like Spanish one; actually Il Cavaliere owns a channel back home... So yep, the amount of comercials is pretty much the same. Still, belive Banshee when she speaks about US channels; it makes the channels in our respective countries look even cool.

It´s easy! The TV is perfect to plug a DVD! Don´t watch it, simple as that. And hey, you have internet connection so...

The Spanish national TV (roughly the equivalent to BBC) has banned commercials and it´s a pain in the ass when you want to finish the dishes of the dinner during breaks or just go to the restroom when you´re watching a film.

It's like any other environmental irritant - smells, background noise... you learn to filter them out.

It sucks having to take a dump in the middle of a show, can take longer than a commercial break to finish up.

This is why we play video games: so we don't have to endure the endless amount of advertisements for products we don't care about. Also, DVR is a worthwhile investment for people who can't stand commercials.

Wait to see the increase in your taxes if you work there, sir. :D

On the other hand, the great solution was stated above and looks like this:

You mean the guy that got the face statued? Well, as far as I know, he went down (YES, HE!) and left the throne of the company to someone else, and his son (as vicepresident). Fact is that the company isn't making Italians pay anything for watching their television, so they HAVE to fill it up to the end with Commericals.

with broadcast tv, the stations are free, so ads are needed to pay the bills. as actors' salaries have skyrocketed, so has the time allocated to commercials. with cable i think it has more to do with milking what has become so commonplace that no one thinks twice about commercials.

I haven't watched TV in several years now, though it has little to do with commercial breaks. I can say that, based on past experience, you just learn the ability to tune out advertisements, and busy yourself with other things for a few minutes.

Canada's worse. We don't even get the good super bowl commercials, just the same bunch with Canadian content...over...and over...and over again.

I ment similarity in contents. Funding depends; two channels are funded by tax money while the rest are private so logicaly, it´s funded with commercials. Il Cavaliere (or his son, but in tis case is irrelevant) actually owns a private one.

Hell of a tuning-out ability you must have. Danish TV isn't that bad yet and there are a small rainforest of rules saying when and where you can and cannot advertise, but it's still too much for me. Though is some said, the contents of modern television is so dismal that, if you don't watch it, you aren't missing anything...

I want Adblock for television. Though at times like this, I'm happy about living in a country with a well funded public service broadcaster. I just hope the Tories don't get in seems as all they want to do is abolish half of the BBC's TV channels, as well as half their radio stations!

I cured this problem by getting rid of cable.  Television is (by and large) such garbage now (even the news!) that there is no point in keeping television service.  Even channels like HBO/ showtime so rarely have shows worth watching that they are a waste of money.  Now if I want to watch a good show I tend to download a season at a time.

Thank god for mass effect and my xbox... otherwise my television would be a paperweight.

Rick Sanchez, Nancy Grace, Glen Beck.. and all your loser "peers"... thanks for doing your part to make the world a dumber place : )
