Wow, looks like the US audience has to suffer through a lot more commercials than the rest of us and I thought it was bad over here. Well it is annoying but there are some channels here in Aus that don't have ads like ABC1,2 and 3. 7 is the worst culprit, their ads go for at least 7 mins and they happen often.
How do you do it?

I only watch a handful of TV shows nowadays. Even then, it's usually background noise while I play a computer game unless I really like a particular show enough to devote most of my attention to it. In those cases I prefer to DVR or On Demand the program though. I can just fast forward through commercials then.

The programs that are only regularly and that I actually pay attention to (there are currently 2 non-sports related ones at the moment) I generally tape. Mostly, though, commercials are the reason why my remote has a jump button. It's only bad then when both channels have commercials simultaneously.
I do, however, often have my TV on for the purpose of white noise. I really, really dislike complete silence (it creeps me out.)

This channel I watch has Commercial breaks in movies. The Commercial breaks sometimes last longer than the movie sessions.

That's why I never bother to watch movies on cable. The ads are too frequent and too long to make it worthwhile.

The Spanish national TV (roughly the equivalent to BBC) has banned commercials and it´s a pain in the ass when you want to finish the dishes of the dinner during breaks or just go to the restroom when you´re watching a film.
Wow - Really - I've got to go to Spain :-)
On the other hand, the great solution was stated above and looks like this:
Or you could use a DVR, surprised no one mentioned that. They have a monthly fee, but it's well worth it to be able to skip ads. Not that there are many good shows left anyway.

I use the ad time for bathroom or snack breaks (yes, I wash my hands first!
). That way, I don't miss any of the actual show.

Meh it's part of life here. If you take adveritisements for what they are, then they have no real mind numbing effect. DVR has pretty much anihlated commercials anyway, the only thing that bugs me are the shameless sponsor plugs in TV shows, but even then, who cares.
