Well Merriam-Webster allows for 3 pronunciations the long o, the short o and also a goi version which is Yiddish. So I guess everyone is correct...and life is good.

you're still wrong....the 3 pronunciations (according to your link) are go (english) goi (yidish) and ga (herbrew etymology)....

so I'm still right, unless you all want to agrue that that as an english speaker I should be using pronunciation other than english........in an english medium.

It does matter... otherwise it's completely pointless to have language rules....

Well, we have rules on punctuation use that you flagrantly ignore!

Language rules are descriptive, not prescriptive.  The only rule is to do what most people around you are doing.  If a region starts drifting in one direction or another, the rules there will change.

I have always pronounced the word how it is pronounced in the game. So has pretty much everyone else I have heard use the word.

I never was wrong. I know the difference between fantasy and reality. I've said all along, it doesn't matter how it's pronounced as long as it's consistent. Excuse me for believing you would finally stop the idiocy. Seriously. Pronounce it how you want. Get mad at the game if you want, but the facts (since you seem to love to spout them) are that the pronunciation varies, the game takes place in a fantasy world, and there is absolutely no way you can say what is or is not proper pronunciation in Fereldan, no matter how much you argue about real world English, which in case you didn't know, allows for a staggering variety of dialects and accents.

Nope all I was stating was that a legitimate and credible source Merriam-Webster allows for the word to be pronounced 3 distinct ways and still mean the same thing. Does not matter whether a person is English speaking or not if they choose to use the short, long or oy they are all still correct pronunciations, because it doesn't change the meaning of the word.

Really?.. well seeing as you used his link as proof that I was wrong.. now that it's turned out to be supportive of my arguement....doesn't that mean that I'm actually right?

I never used his link as proof of anything. I don't need proof because I'm not making an outlandish statement. Can you prove the correct Fereldan pronunciation of anything, let alone golem?

you did... you stated that his 'newly introduced fact' was grounds for closure of the thread.... doesn't that mean that it's grounds for closure then, in my favour?

And if it's that case that spelling in DA isn't indicative of the actual word... then why bother writing any of it or the books?

They could spell it whoever way they want really, its their creations. They could have named them anything. I mean, they spell "Sir" as "Ser" for example.

Way to dodge the question.

Can you prove the correct Fereldan pronunciation of anything, let alone golem?

Hint: The answer is either "Yes" or "No."

I did not "state his 'newly introduced fact' was grounds for closure of the thread. I responded to his thread with. "Yay for closure." That simply means that I was glad the thread could end. How could it's validity or lack thereof have any bearing on "your favour"?

Half of the words Americans use on a daily basis are mispronounced but there is a 3 page thread about 'golem' in a video game?

I'll pronounce it 'hamandcheesesandwich' if I so choose.

If this is so important to you, perhaps you should also campaign for the many other words that have changed pronunciations over the years to be reverted back to the original sound.

Maybe that's just how they pronounce it in Britain [not corrected].

We pronounce it Go-lem... Really can't believe that this went 3 pages without anyone correcting it... not that it matters in the slightest.

Heres my £0.012 (2 cents)

Cent, the first: This is Ferelden, not England (where we invented the language you so masterfully butcher and mispronounce over there in America). Even so, it doesn't matter how it is pronounced here or even in Washington or Vancouver. I say tomato, you say tomayto... we don't start a thread on vegetables weekly's forum about it

Cent, the second: This is Thedas, not Earth. Our rules of grammar, punctuation and pronunciation have little or no bearing on how they wish to do/say/write or dance things. It is a fantasy setting, likely using a different language that just sounds quite similar to english (galactic basic, anyone?)

As far as I know, there is a factual different pronunciation of golem from the word that means automaton and that fantasy aspect that means rock-robot.

Now, Rockman/Megaman. [smilie]http://fi.somethingawful.com/images/smilies/emot-megaman.gif[/smilie]

Actually, I did. I misread pronunciation 3 - I thought that was an umlaut rather than a long a.

I agree with your basic point that the pronounciation is incorrect.

But there is a breed of dog called the Weimaraner. In the U.S., we pronounce it as starting with "why." That's clearly incorrect because it is named after a German locality and should be pronounced "vie ..."

Same thing for cows called Holsteins. In the U.S., we say "hole-steen." But it's from the German region pronounced "hole-stine."

Sometimes incorrect pronunciations become standard. After all, we call Mexico "Mecks-e-co" instead of "May-he-co."

I would agree that the "go-lem" rather than "gollum" pronunciation is more accurate. What bothered me more, during the game, was how the name "Eamonn" was pronounced. Only one voice actor got this name correct. (Loghain, during the Landsmeet, pronounces the name correctly.)

Eamon(n) is a genuine name that is fairly common in Ireland, and would also be found among Irish people living abroad. It should be pronounced as if it was written "Ay-mon" not "Ee-mon".
