The process involves you modifying the .png file that is uploaded from your character save in Dragon Age: Origins. Or at least that is one of the methods used to upload custom avatars.

It's also said if you connect your own FTP server to their server by messing with your DAOUpdater settings, you can get it to load up portraits for you.
