I have played through ME1 3 times and am finishing up my second playthrough of ME2.  I was just wondering if anyone, besides me, has considered starting a new Shepard in ME1 and play him/her right through the end of ME2.  While I know that's a lot of time - it for some reason appeals to me in a very cinematic way that no other gaming franchise ever has.  The idea that I could experience the story arc of this character all the way through in one "sitting" (not literally) is awesome.

Just wondering if anyone has considered this, or is ME1 kind of "replaced" by ME2 for you.  To be honest, when ME3 comes out, I think it would be cool as heck to do this with the whole trilogy.  I am, obviously, a major fan of this series thus far, so perhaps this is just me.  Love to see your thoughts.  Thanks guys!

I just did it a few days ago, it's really great to have all the choices you make carry over to the next game and it's the best way for a refresher on the story. Not to mention the starting bonuses when you import. The only bad part is going through the horrific parts of the first game that they VASTLY improved in the second like the inventory system and combat mechanics.

I do this.

I have 2 level 60's in ME1 that have gone through 3x each to max charm/intimidate with no points spent, and two more in their 40's and 50's.

So far have done 2 full playthroughs of ME2 with 2 chars.

You can actually plow through these games incredibly fast once the 'first run' is done.

It doesn't take very long at all.

On ME2 replacing ME1, no. There are some things I really like in ME1 over ME2 and vice versa, so they are both very playable still.

I'm doing that now in ME1 except I'm using a level 60 character so I don't have to do the inventory anymore (which absolutely sucked).

I did this myself before ME2 came out. I'd played ME1 on an XBox which has since become a big white box with a little red light on it, and wanted a character to import. I played through ME1 and finished just in time to fire up ME2.

The differences are a bit jarring... adjusting to completely different keybindings has been a bit rough, but one good thing has been all the references to ME1 that appear in ME2. They're fresh in my memory, so I'm getting all the self-referential jokes and recognizing a lot of the ME1 players before I even start talking to them. I'm glad I did it.

Yes, ME1 & ME2 are different games. Both are enjoyable & playable but distinctly different. I'm keeping both of them myself.

I did this (full playthrough of ME1, directly transitioned to ME2), and the transition is horrible. It's like going from KOTOR to Modern Warfare: Space Edition (and not in a good way).

I tried to find screenshots of the HUD in ME2, and I couldn't, and then I realized: that's because there isn't any. I hate the new UI and HUD so much, the orange is WAY harder to see (especially for people who are colorblind, thanks for thinking that one through BioWare)

Ammo system I don't care for; it simply does not make any sense if this game was actually trying to have a reasonably consistant storyline -- why would guns suddenly start requiring reloading?

Armor and weapon systems feel dumbed down, but I was expecting that.

The grenade launcher "switch" is another inconsistent storyline element. Upgradable hover grenades worked much better, and making this kind of a change now is just stupid. I don't want to switch to a different weapon just for a grenade, I just want to click G (or any keybind) and throw a ******* grenade.

Total removal of the inventory system was a bit jarring. It kind of felt like they went "RPG element? Get that **** out of there."

Anyways, my top complaint is the new HUD. I just want some ******* health and shield bars that I can actually see. Not this "blood vision" ******** that, for some inexplicable reason, disappears as soon as your shields come back (even though/if you're still oozing metaphorical blood).

It's distracting in a BAD way, and horribly unintuitive. Am I at 10% HP or 90% HP? **** if I know, all I know is my eyeballs must look like spaghetti right now, judging from this red/brown **** blocking my vision.

Oh yeah, and I can't forget: what the **** is up with this new "ammo mod" system? I can't actually mod my guns, but I can magically "switch on my fire bullet ability"!? For a game that looks like it was trying to go for MORE realism, this change seems incredibly unintuitive.

Aye, I did the exact same thing too. I originally beat ME 2 with a new character (Only because I beat it on the 360, and got the PC version, and didn't have the urge to back to play ME 1 again to import my character)

But, after beating ME 2 , I got so into the Mass Effect series again that i said screw that I'll try to play the first one again, but go as a Renegade Male Shepard, (With paragon choices, so I can see if there was a difference) Ohh my, is it a different experience.

Overall, the core story is still the same, your hunting the Collectors, and the team, that hasn't changed, but the little dialogue conversations that pop up, and even some minor side quests, just make it really feel like a complete game as it's really your character and story.

Now I'm back to ME 2 again, enjoying it, and once I'm done, I'm probably gonna go back to ME 1 again (This time paragon Female Shepard, with maybe some renegade choices), so I got a nice variety of imports for Me 3 when it's ready :)

As for the transitioning of going back to ME 1 , it's really not as bad, granted the combat features are lame, but the story is still pretty darn good, that revisiting ME 1 is not bad at all.

As a result, if you can do this, and are bored with all other games, I highly advise you to try this, at least once, just so you can really get that true full experience. It's also a good way to keep your interested in ME overall, while waiting for that very soon DLC which should hopefully come by the end of this month.

I grabbed my original level 44 character and ran her through ME1 again, doing everything in that game (including both DLC packs) to get her to level 60 just in time to immediately start ME2, so my first experience of the series was one entire playthrough of both games. And I loved every second of the 142 hours it took me to do all that.

Not a new Shepard, but I started a new game with one of my level 50-odd characters a few days before ME2 was released so that the events of ME1 were fresh in my mind (not to mention starting off with a level 60 character :)).
