- Note that this is mainly my own conclusion from the game and checked three times to 'back' it up for my own .

Any additional information/conclusions/insights/perspectives is WELCOME. -

We all know that we are running on a suicide mission and people will die if preparations aren't made.

We know it's essential to upgrade the ship to the maximum to ensure nobody dies on the way in. Now notice we arrived all safe and sound, we still have to make some miles to reach our destination and this is what it bottles down for me.

Selecting the correct platoon leaders and specalists goes without saying and as well for their loyalities.

However, noticing the upgrades I figured that the personal upgrades of several squadmates could impact the chances of survival. Take for instance Mordin, Jack and legion. Notice how they don't really have something to say about the ship but rather talk about their own personal upgrades. Well, of course I just done EVERY possible upgrade before entering the damn mission and really getting everyone out alive.

Now, trying to reassure myself these personal upgrades could affect the squad, I loaded up a prior save and left out the personal upgrades. Here it starts to become very interesting. Legion the specalist, died once during the three tests I conducted. Mordin died 2/3 and Jack made it through. [ I suppose her savage personality really does the job. ] I think it's a very small factor and possibily just happening to me only, but I found it interesting thus I decided to share this information with the community.

Here are some remarkable theories of others:

RiouHotaru:

Actually, I've gotten all the personal upgrades and what not, and yet somehow either Mordin or Tali randomly die while holding the door. I'm of the opinion it's a bug, because many folks have had either one die consistently, and some have never had a single casualty ever. There's possibly some random coding or variable that determines if one of them dies. (For example, in my first run, no one died, on my second, Mordin randomly keeled over but Tali was fine, on my third, Tali randomly bit the bullet, but not Mordin.

Now, on my first run, I had Jacob escort the crew members back to the ship, and no one died.  On my second run, Mordin died, so I reloaded and had him in my party, which kept him from dying, and everyone survived.  On my third run, I had Mordin escort the crew back to the ship (basically a free pass to get someone to live) but then Tali died...until I put her in my party, and then no one died.  The game seems ridiculously inconsistent.  I've heard some people who have had Zaeed randomly die, of all people.

Medlish:

On my last playthrough Mordin was loyal and had his upgrades. Also had tons of normal upgrades. Still died at the end (lying on the floor scene), then I though "Screw this!" and made him escort the non fighting crew back. Worked.

This strengthens the believe you should know your squad and allocate them properly, we know Mordin is a STG but battling hordes of Collecters...we will never know. [ Heartlocker. ]

In no way I am trying to point facts or whatsoever, this is simply a conclusion for myself when I conducted these feeble tests. I want everyone who is ready to flame me to read what I have said, I am just sharing this with you guys.

Grunt has a personal upgrade too

Interesting theory. In my first game mordin died seemingly at random. I can't remember if i did his upgrade or not. Probably not because ezo is so scarce in an initial playthrough

That is interesting. For every member that does not have a ship upgrade option there is a personal upgrade option. I will make note of that. I upgrade peeps just to be prepared my first time. I will be extra careful to make sure this happens again.

Thanks for the input. I want to come out with everyone every single time I play it.

I am wondering if trying to talk to your teammates constantly and finally running out of dialogue options could perhaps signal that they are fully devoted to you and your cause? I am just throwing out my thoughts on this.

@Edit: The Governator.

I am including Grunt, you are absolutly right, he as well, as personal upgrades, but my save already contained his, thus not capable of including him, but I will edit my first post to include your information.

the flaw there is that people have also had Tali die as the random death. no personal upgrade there.

it may be that it is just purely random...

Not sure, Heart, but I think I exhausted mine as well. I was not concerned about getting Jack out alive, I just do not like her. I do not care for Mordin either. The rest I cared about to varying degrees. My favorite, of course, being Tali.

Makes sense, actually..

My first playthrough Grunt died and I never got his shotgun. Legion died and I never did his loyalty quest.

That's interesting. I was almost certain that I wouldn't get Mordin's upgrade because I rarely used him and, as others have pointed out, ezo is so rare but by the end I decided to give it to him on a whim and he survived. I'm certain that I didn't get Jack's upgrade though and she still lived though I did choose Samara for the biotic escort. Yeah, I think it'll be a while before the "survival code" is fully cracked. Hell, even the Prima Official strategy guide got it wrong.

So on my last playthrough I didn't upgrade either Legion or Grunt's perseonal upgrade, and neither died

Tali and Garrus were in the final battle, just to make sure they SURVIVED out there. I think Shepard's presence and his "Aura" of epic ness will result into surviving the mission if they are loyal to you. I mean, the deaths I mentioned happened without me.

Mordin's omni-tool upgrade is quite signficant. As I stated, Jack's just one of those crazy ass psycho's that doesn't die easily, if she does, she does get the job done.

I agree, Ezo is valuable and shouldn't be wasted easily if you are not in the mood for planet scanning.

And to the poster who said he didn't recieved either upgrade and still had his squad living, I assume it has something to do with luck, if they were fighting with you or not and of course loyality. That one goes a BIG way.

I've always upgraded the crew wanting their own personal item and never lost a man. Even with two lacking loyalty.

It's an interesting theory. I bought no personal upgrades on my first playthrough.

Mordin (My tech specialist) died. It would be interesting to see if he would've lived with his upgraded Omni-Tool.

My only other casualty was Legion who died because I didn't upgrade the ship shields. What's weird about this is technically Tali should've died as Legion was (for no apparent reason) standing where she usually does. Tali was my LI though so maybe your LI gets a pass on any deaths in the suicide mission?

he will die every time no matter what you do for him, because he is NOT a tech specialist (physically incapable of closing the door in time)

Yes yes, knowing he is a STG but not really up to battling hordes might impair him to battle further, in fact, alot of people complained about him dying on the 2nd platoon during the battle.

This further increases my believes that your presence AKA the zomg aura of Shepard is another factor that increases your odd for survival. It might not be true, but hell no loyal squadmate died around shepard for me.

Is this true? I was under the impression if your actual team for the last boss wasn't loyal, they'd kick the bucket too. I've never tested this, as I don't feel like intentionally screwing up just to see if the theory is true.

if you have non loyal team mates in your party to fight the last boss, they will die.

100% confirmed.
