I like Jacob. Most people don't like him because he fades into the background with all the crazy aliens on board. He is much like Kaidan in the way that he is just a regular guy trying to do what's right. I do wish his loyalty mission was better in the way it showed off his inner struggles but overall it was decent.
For his appearance, I think he is very attractive. He is a very good attempt at a real African American man. I think it is very nice to see Bioware showing diversity in its games. All other gaming companies focus on the Mr. T/Dennis Rodman look a likes. With those hideous "fro-hawks, blonde hair, crazy ridiculous attitudes, whatever, I'm happy Jacob is aboard the Normandy. My male Shep needs a good homie and Jacob is just the guy.
Jacob for me has the good stuff. We going to get loud on the Citadel and have some drinks! Woot.
I like Jacob as a person. His character is just less interesting than it could have been. He's also really not "a regular guy whose trying to do what's right". He works for a very morally questionable organization, (which in the context isn't so bad) but seems so totally ambivalent about it. At no point does he seem to actually question whether or not the terrorist organization he works for might be manipulating him.
I mean, sure he doesn't ever say "No" to Cerberus, but at quite a few points in the early game both the Illusive Man and Shepard mention that Jacob is one who speaks his mind when he doesn't like something. The Illusive Man has apparently had Jacob question his orders at least once. So I don't think he doesn't know that he is probably being manipulated, it is more that he is just going to play it as it comes. Which is the same attitude as Shepard has (Paragon shepard especially, you have to work for Cerberus, but you can defy them when necessary).
