Jalem, you have a good point. I do agree that Jacob is more complex than some people would make. He's a pretty good buddy for male Shepard, but I do think people have legitimate reasons for disliking how his romance was written.

No contest there.  The romance is pretty lol.

Jacob's a dull character. There's not much to him.

Except he has what is probably the darkest loyalty mission in the entire game?

Emotional baggage and muddled pasts do not equate to depth.

There's nothing deep about gettting morally outraged over something that is obviously a moral outrage to anybody with half a conscience.

Agreed janeym27. And I think he could more than hold his own in a "slapping" match with Kaiden.

Are you thinking shirtless jelly wrestling?! :innocent:

The winner will get the love of a beautiful woman, the loser will be sticky and sore!

Umm...not exactly.

Yeah... I just read the quote on myself. Maybe not.

But seriosuly, I think if any of the two FemShep LIs are likely to have words, it's Kaiden and Jacob, and I really think a showdown of sorts would be really interesting in terms of romance developement. A biotic battle would be fun.

I think Jacob gets a bad deal. Unfortunatly, I fear a Jacob support thred would be spammed to very very limits of forum spamming! Not to mention the trolls (who, due to their substantial diets of spam, will be giant and angry!)

Sorry - I'm having a weird day and I think my brain is broken. :alien:

You want to see two hunks ****slap each other for your attention. Fair enough. They did as much in the first agme where, as a male shep, you could suggest a threesome with Ashley and Liara.:D

I still think Jacob plays an impotant part, character wise. Especially if you look at your team as a whole.

I hated Jacob simply because his dialogue was bland:
"OH HEY SHEPARD, WERE GOING TO KICK ASS.. RIGHT?"
"CERBERUS ARE THE GOOD GUYS, RIGHT?"
"HEY FATHER, YOUR EVIL NOW. RIGHT?"

As a female Shepard, all dialogue also leads to flirting and it's horrible.

I dislike Jacob becasue of his romance. For God's sake, in the final romance scene he sounds like some creepy rapist. "BUT TEH PRIIIIIII|ZE"

Like many people, I somewhat like Jacob but nowhere near as much as other members of the squad (he's probably tied with Miranda for least favorite, or perhaps with Zaeed and Legion as second least). I find him comparatively boring in relation to the others.

Many people have pointed out - with some justification - that, "Oh, so lack of emotional baggage and issues means you're BORING LOL." Which is an attitude I disagree with; I think well balanced, emotionally stable people can make some of the coolest characters around.

I think Jacob's problem is that he lacks a character hook. I'd almost say a "quirk", but more than that. If you asked me who he *is* or what he's like, I'd have a lot harder time nailing it down than any of the other characters. Miranda is frosty and superior, Jack is angry and psychotic, Tali is flustered and adorable, Garrus is snarky but troubled, Mordin loves singing, Samara has a calm air, Grunt likes fighting, etc etc... you can really get a grip on who they are, or what they like, or even some random things like Zaeed's accent and love for his rifle. Jacob doesn't really seem to have that hook. He's just... a guy without many distinguishing features. Maybe his relationship with his father, but even that seemed to take a backseat to what his father became; the loyalty mission seems like it would have gone off the exact same way even if Jacob wasn't in the party.

That's actually why I disagree 100% with the idea that Jacob is another Kaiden. Kaiden had oodles of character hooks. He got headaches. He had a bad encounter with a turian instructor. He was sexually restrained (he turned down a threesome between femShep and Liara, for chrissakes!) He got flustered easily and was hesitant. There are lots of things you could point to in his characterization. I have trouble doing the same with Jacob... there isn't really anything that stands out, for better or for worse.

I think this sums up my opinion better than my big screed above. ;-)

To be honest, though, in the first half hour or so of ME2, he was almost poised to be my favorite character, just because it seemed I'd be recruiting nothing but DARK AND EDGY AND ANGRY MERCS and he seemed the nicest and most well-balanced character in the new DARK AND EDGY game. Even when I got Garrus, my second recruit after Zaeed, I was still unsure (mostly because, as Joker said, Garrus was using the stick up his butt to beat people to death). The next recruit was Mordin, though, and frankly, that was it for poor Jacob; there was no way he could compete with the awesome that is Mordin.

I agree with Usagi. The fact that Shepard doesn't have to play psychologist is rather refreshing. The problem is, however, as you said, that there is no real hook, unless it's that he's the most normal out of all of them. I think he could have told stories of his corsair or Alliance days without venturing into angst territory. I also agree about Mordin...one of my three favorite characters in ME2.

Well, he's the one character you truly trust at the beginning of the game, I'll give him that. But the thing is, he always felt like temporary character, and not a main one. Like after helping you get set up, he should have left to do his own thing, and you'll meet him again later. Instead, he's with you from beginning to end, not doing much, nor having much to offer.

This is a good point. During the first part of the game, he was a good character, the only guy you could really trust, etc. But as soon as you started recruiting people, he just... stopped doing much. It's like he served his purpose really early on and thus feels like a bit of a throwaway character. Not sure how that could have been fixed... possibly by having him leave the ship and come back later, as you mention, or possibly by just giving him more to do or more character development.

The fact his powers aren't exactly... great.. didn't help much in attracting players to bring him along on missions. I like him, though. I wish he could have told some stories about his days as a Corsair.

I think he's more of a plot vehicle - explains to you where you are and what's going on in the early stages of the game. They could've easily just had Wilson or some other faceless npc do the job and kill them off at the end of the first mission.

They seemed to have spent 000 time on him, and I feel bad for the VA since he did a good job but had little to work with.

I pretty much ignored him after my first playthrough since he has no depth.

I liked the story behind his loyalty quest, but that's about it.

I let him die in my main playthrough on purpose.

I think he had more depth then Kaidan (if you're Male Shepard. Female Shepard got a better character out of him if I remember correctly). But he ran into the same problem as Kaidan, which is, unless you're romancing him, there is very little to his character, and he's considered disposable.

Example: If you romance Jacob, then he is the only one that asks how "you" are feeling, after being brought back. Everyone else just talks about "their" problems, but not yours.

But if you don't romance him, he'll just talks about getting loud and drunk after the mission. That's it.

Jacob is just a vehicle for smalltalk. He says nothing to make you think and is not quirky enough to be endearing. He sucks in combat.

There was a support thread for him and it was only six or seven pages long. lol

This is why male leading characters like Carth and Alistair were better than Jacob and even Kaiden. Carth, while an emo, was vastly deep and had way more complex issues and views on things whether you romanced him or not. And Alistair, had a very bright wise cracking personality to him.

I don't dislike Jacob, but what I don't like, is how femshep flirts with him, no matter what choice you pick. I think it's unfair for me to judge him, since I know almost nothing about him/his character story, because I never get thru it, and in most cases, don't even bother talking to him.

Atleast Jacob didn't whine and moan about everything like Carth did, he took action - especially brutal when he leaves the gun on the Renegade option in his loyalty mission.
