Early in game, he is vulnerable. So using position to limit aggro targets (e.g., back to a wall, corners to fight in) is important, as well as using your whole team to focus taking out vulnerable targets like mages and arrowmen quickly. Later, with all the good equipment upgrades as you normally progress in game, plus plenty of health poultices handy :-), he's a fine tank. I find crowd control skills to be as pivotal as equipment. When most of your opponents are asleep or confused or frozen, they don't hit hard :-)
