The Prima guide book sucks. Rush job?

I know people are going to say "If you have to use the cheat book, you suck."  Well, I'd just like to say that I got the guide for one main reason... to minimize the frustration associated with resource mining, which tested my patience too much in the original game.  I gladly spent the money to cut down on busy work.

The Prima book contains a so-so section of the book on the topic of mining, so it was a somewhat worthwhile investment in that respect (ie It does tell you which planets have how much of a particular element, but no maps or specifics, suggesting locations are random.  Also included some general mining tips.  Nothing as helpful as what I read on this forum,  but still somewhat helpful.)

I also found it useful for determining how much exactly all the upgrades cost to cut down on over-mining (See 'Mining Tips stickey on the General discussion forum, page 5), but overall I was really disapointed with the guide book for this game.  One of the few times I wanted to use it was to to help my entire crew survive after some of them didn't make it on my first attempt at the final suicide run.  (3 died, so I turned to the book for help.  It had nothing to say on the topic Image IPB.  Thankfully, the official community here offered sound advice regarding squad selection that was far more helpful than the book.)

It has practically no romance section, no weapon damage stats, zero explanation of various end-game requirements, and many other things players who buy a cheat book expect.  It also didn't mention the Kelly easter egg if you invite her to 'dinner', which I would have appreciated greatly.  It's as though the book was a rush job written by someone struggling to make their deadline, and did a terrible job of covering all the possible plot permutations.  It's like they beat it, wrote about what happened during their one, hurried playthrough, and failed  to mention that things could have ended differently.  WTF!?!

So basically, the guide book sucks.   This forum is a far better source for information overall... just FYI.

Strategy guides haven't really been the same since the early nineties, really. The last good one I can remember was the Tales of the Sword Coast guide, and that was about 10 years ago. Not only that, the vanilla Baldur's Gate and the Baldur's Gate 2 guides were especially bad.

Well, knowing the exact amounts of resources required for all upgrades was nice, but that's not worth $20.  Live.  Learn.

I think FFIX was the last strategy guide I ever read... at Barnes'n'Noble because when I opened it, I thought, "Ha! No way I'm wasting money on this!" Every single section basically said:

This fight is tough, go to playonline.com for more tips!

Then I discovered forums and the info here is much more in depth and substantial, and questions are sometimes answered... even by the Dev's themselves! Top that, Prima!

I have it. The maps are pretty nice. Iirc they show the location of all missables. The planet guide was waaaayy overkill.

I usually buy a guide to go with an RPG after beating it, usually to help with things like gear or in this case mining.

The last good guide I bought was the one for Morrowind. that was like 10 years ago.

In an age of forum addicts and compulsive wiki updaters game guides are usually made obsolete before the ink is dried.

Don't waste your money on them in future.

The only thing I've found useful is the maps and the planets guide. Other than that I was disappointed when I turned into the back to look in the art section and saw the Human-Reaper concept... I almost avoided being spoiled...

I bought Collectors Edition guide, hard-bound. Not going to unwrap it or anything, just going to keep it.

Actually the guide book is pretty damn accurate in most cases. And it tells you exactly where EVERY item is on every mission, no exceptions.

There are a few obvious mistakes in there. But generally its rather accurate and useful, especially considering the wiki is not as complete as the guidebook is currently.

The main issue I have with the guidebook is that there is no DLC info whatsoever and it does not go into enough detail about possible builds and what are the best builds for squad members.

Other than those two issues i got my monies worth.

The biggest issue I have is that they won't criticize the games. They won't man up and say, "never choose X skill because it just SUCKS."

I'd like it if they'd do that.
