Eh, I switch between Soundtracks and some other music for writing. Generally I listen to Thousand Foot Krutch and Jars of Clay (their song "hero" is quite inspiring to me.)

Anything by Hans Zimmer is good as well :)

Didn't he direct the music for Pirates of the Caribbean?

At least 1-2 of them.  I think all 3.

I'm also a soundtrack fan. Hans Zimmer is particularly awesome, but recently I've been listening to the music from Firefly (the series).

Anything filled with atmosphere with minimalist vocals or vocals that are a part of the instrumentation rather than the focus of it. Post Rock/Metal mainly. Lyrics tend to distract me more than anything and I find them more hostile to any creative process I might have going on in my head since the lyrics tend to alter my own train of thought too much. I like music that makes me feel like I'm floating but gives me the freedom to swim without too much current forcing me in one direction.

Neurosis, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wolves in the Throne Room, Lights out Asia, Rosetta are just a few off the top of my head that I love to write to.

Oh, Voyage 34 by Porcupine Tree is an absolute must for me when I'm trying to touch the surreal. Which is about what you'd expect from an 80 minute long album about an acid trip.

Oh, I also listen to Reel Big Fish when I need to be pumped up, especially "She's Got a Girlfriend Now" and "I Hate You." Evanescense (I have a girl crush on Amy Lee)... Pearl Jam's new song "Breath" is awesome and I've got it set up to play tons of times. I love Pandora online because I can create stations suited to my mood at the time. LOL

I'm with SurfaceBeneath. Too many lyrics will distract me. Even if they are totally appropriate to what I'm writing about. But I have made a list of some songs to express what I think some characters might say to or think about one another. I listen to those when I'm pondering, but not when actually writing.

Evanescence for action scenes, but not fighting. Straight blues (John Coltrane, Muddy Waters or Memphis Slim) or slow jazz for romantic scenes. Cruxshadows for the big fights. Battles need a good beat. Scenes with Zevran seems to want Eurotrash discoey stuff. Alistair seems all boy bandy. Sten gets classical, especially opera. Oghren is who I shamelessly indulge my secret love of redneck rock and country with (he strikes me as a biker dude). Lelianna is all Heather Alexander. I haven't done much with Morrigan, but death metal seems appropriate. Shale is the real stumper. She requires sad music. I just do not know what sort.

I have also found that *ahem* Korpliklaani is awesome for fight scenes, especially "Wooden Pints." I also use that to terrify co-workers into leaving me alone.

I'll often play the soundtrack to Icewind Dale, but I also like the non lyrical stuff by Peter Gabriel (Soundtracks to Birdy and Last Temptation of Christ), and the soundtrack to Baraka.

Woxy internet radio. Sometimes when I get really into something I have to listen to something so familiar I don't really notice it, I just get emotions from it. So for those times I have my "writing music" list which is comprised mostly of Radiohead and Okkervil River, with a smattering of other things like Modest Mouse and soundtracks from Wes Anderson movies.

I can't even read to music. I can't even cook to music. And if the beat of the music is too fast or too slow, I can't even *walk normally* to music.

Writing to music sounds like some creativity obstacle course to me.

Does anyone have favorite tunes, albums, or playlists for writing?

What about songs they find fit their work or various character?

I've written 80% of my current WIP to Creamfields. It's a single trance 'song' broken into 7 individual tracks and provides about 43 minutes of music.

I usually find I can write for 43 minutes solid before I have to take a break and stretch.

For my main characters:
A Simple Man for Alistair
Saint Teresa for Leliana
Closer (NSFW/Explicit lyrics) and Engel for Morrigan

Just a quick off-topic note/comment, did you know that "creamfields" is the name of the largest music festival in the UK? And by music festival I mean those the like of "Global gathering".

I've not been writing in a little while and I tend not to listen to much when I am but I came across something I quite liked that'd suit me if I were currently writing.
Invincible: an ode to one who has fallen

In my defence, I never managed to play wc for more than 3-4 months at a time and only had a few spats on it/haven't been a player of it for years... and I quit permanently just before the plagueworks opened if any of you have any clue what I'm talking about. Lastly, I don't typically listen to songs from games and such but this was an exception.

I don't write to music, but I certainly listen to music while I am reading. Like, for instance, if I am reading something invlolving Morrigan or Leliana I like to listen to Muse - Sunburn . I often like to listen to 30 Seconds To Mars - This Is War as well. I'm basically a rock/metal fan so I listen to those kinds of music, sometimes classical or pop too.

I love Engel, fits Morrigan. God knows, she doesn't want to be an angel. Image IPB

My taste in music is extremely eclectic, from oldies to early 90s rap to folk music to death metal. I like almost anything, and what I'll listen to really depends on my mood. For writing, I usually go with songs that make me think of the characters I'm writing, or those which melodies evoke a certain feeling I'm trying to convey.
