Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it possible to restart a game with your old character, keeping all your stats/gear? You could do it in other BioWare stuff like Jade Empire and Mass Effect 1. (Unfortunately it seems ME2 only keeps your heavy weapons, pooh.)
Possible to restart game with same character? Keeping stats/gear?

You get to keep all your acquired weapons and armor -- the only thing you don't hold onto is your stats per-say. If you start another game with that character you will have skills points for whatever level you were. So if you ended your first playthrough on level thirty, you would have that many skill points at the start of the new game.

I must have chosen the wrong menu option when I tried to start a new DA game. When I tried to restart it I ended up having to create a new character all over again starting at level one. Do I click on "New Game"? Or do I load it to pick up where I left off? Sorry for the n00b question. (Btw I have the Xbox 360 version of the game. Does this make a difference?)

I tried to restart the game from the main menu and selected "New Game" but it still didn't work -- it was fresh toon from scratch. Should I have done it another way? Please specify.

You can't. You're speaking of starting a new original campaign with a character that would have been saved from a previous campaign, like you could with NWN 1 ? You can't.
More you can do is save the face or use mods. Sorry.

You actually can do this.
(Backup your BIoware folder under MyDocuments folder first in case you click the wrong thing deleting your character.)
From the game,
choose main menu if not already at the main menu
choose new game
choose Import ME2 character
choose your ME2 charcter on the list, and click Select Career
( you cannot change careers here so "DO NOT" choose Delete Career" as this will delete all your saved games.)
At the single saved game entry called, "Auto Save - Normandy SR-2"
click Load Game.
choose your game options at the next screen and then click continue
you should now see the beginning intro screens. with Miranda and the Illusitard talking going all the way through the initial crash replay etc.
After this, you'll be at the character facial features where you can change his facial apperance or keep the orginal character face.
You then be able to choose your characters main default power selection.
Then you'll be in the doctor's office being told to get up.
When you first get up off of the table, and you press esc then click the Squad menu option
you'll see that your character is at the same level as when you ended it the first time.

another bit of info, after you complete the first conversation with Illusitard, you get an info window on the right that for the mission summary that tells you:
"You receive the following bonuses for having beaten Mass Effect 2.
+25% bonus experience on all missions
Retain all heavy weapons from previous playthroughs
+200,000 credits
+50,000 of all the mineral types."
