After you beat the game, you get a bonus power to pick just like the first game. But my main gripe about this is that its pointless. This game only gives you enough squad points to spend on a set amount of talents. You can only max out 4 skills. Your level caps out at 30, and when you get to later levels they only give out 1 point to spend on your talents so its totally stupid for Bioware to even give you a bonus power cuz you wont be able to put any points into it.  I beat the game at level 28, start a brand new game importing my save that i used to beat the game so i start out at level 28. Immediately I gain a level so i'm now at 29 and they give me 1 point to spend on my talents. WTF is the point in giving me a bonus power at all?!? what are you trying to tease me or something Bioware? that was my main gripe with this game to begin with - the fact that they reduced the amount of skills you can use. and they totally created the skill system for this game around 30 levels so you can only max out 4 skills and when they give you a bonus skill it just ends up being pointless.  What they need to do is increase the level cap, and make it so they give you more Squad points  after you gain a level to put into your skills so you can take advantage of your bonus skill after you beat the game.

You can't max everything out,. you have to put some thinking and strategy into your choices.

Also, the bonus powers are unlocked any time you get someone loyal, and you can use the Prototype research "Advanced Training" to train one at any time.

Yes i realize that. But with an extra bonus power, its pointless, they need to give out more Squad points if they want it to make any impact cuz as of right now, nobody will be able to put any points into it at all cuz there are simply not enough squad points in the game. There are only enough squad points to go up to level 30 and even then you need to be stingy with them and pick and choose cuz you will only be able to max out 4.

A) You can max out 5 powers if you want and still have 1 left over point.  That's 5 out of 7 with 1 extra.
B) Most classes have 1 junk power that really isn't needed or even a good investment (Cryo Ammo for multiple classes).
C) Most classes have abilities that really only need 1 point.  (Pull, Throw on higher difficulties)

You have plenty of points.  Your complaint is completely unwarranted.

You make it sound like you want enough squad points to max every power/skill out, but then where is the fun in that? The way it is now, you have to think and put some strategy into leveling your powers like Aisynia mentioned above. As far as nobody being able to put any points into the bonus skill, use the Prototype research <Retrain Powers> to have all your squad points back, and then place points into your bonus skill. Besides, you get 50 points to spend, that is quite enough.

There is no point in them giving you an extra bonus power and not giving you either :
A. More Squad points to use   or
B. An increase in the level cap so you definitely will get more points to spend in your talents/powers.

as it is now, you can only max out 4 powers, with a few powers at like level 1 or 2. whats the point in giving you a bonus power? you cant do anything with it.

you could go to the tech lab and retrain even before they gave you a bonus power for beating the game  so it doesnt matter. whats the point in having a bonus power? you have no more squad points to spend it in anyway regardless if it was there or not. i know you could retrain but thats not my point.

my main point is that they need to give you more squad points to take advantage of your new bonus power. plus it would be cool if bioware gave you the option after beating the game to be able to max out all your stats. who can argue with that? if would be badass to have all you skills maxed.

You're going to have to sacrifice the strength of other abilities in order to make full use of the bonus ability. I would assume that to be intentional. Besides, they give you a free point in it anyway.

What I would really like is if we could respec our squadmates. I'm pretty sure that many of us maxed out, or came pretty close to maxing out, their first two abilities, only to be left with a relative few points to put into the loyalty abilities.

Are you reading of the other post besides your own? Why do you continue to say you can't do anything with the bonus power? You CAN do something with it, you can even max it out if you wish. Being able to max out 4-5 skills out of 6-7 is damn good enough. So please stop your complaining about not being able to having 999,999 squad points to spend on 6-7 skills (each skill only being able to have 10 points spent in them max).

I remember in Mass Effect 1 when leveling up was more rewarding. You're supposed to increment your skills, not "save up" to get one good thing. Thats stupid. I agree with opening post. I want Mass Effect 2 with a bit more Mass Effect 1 if ya know what I mean.

You can retrain over and over as long as you have to proper resources. Plenty of people could and would argue about having all your skills evolved to max. Being able to retrain squad mates would be great though. I ended up holding off spending points in most of my squad until I got their loyalty power with at least 10 points saved up. I did spend some points before hand, I just made sure I would still have the points to max their loyalty powers once I unlocked them.

I prefer the leveling system in ME1 too because I hate having to save up points. That said, I do not agree with the opening post because he seems to want max skills/powers. You couldn't have max powers in ME1, and its no different in ME2. I like it that way.

I hated that system "Oh boy, level 31, I guess I'll gain 5% more overload damage and 0.5s Barrier Duration, woohoo" It doesn't matter much at all, but bigger intervals feel better to me.

So this thread is really about you wanting all the skills maxed.

That is obsurd.

The point of these games is to have the player "choose" how to create their character and the abilities they have.
Make you play over with different skill builds.
Not a Cookiw cutter build that works for all classes by maxing out skills.

Lets try this. If you did not spend a single squad point and played on crap abilities and then had all these points at the end. Couldn't you then max out that Bonus skill by way of choosing what direction your build would be?

So what would be the difference of creating that build from the start and picking only the skills you really needed to play so you can max that bonus skill?

Its called personal preference, use your judgment. You don't need to max every tree, the point is to maximize your character with the limited amount of points, which will do very well if you pick a correct bonus power.

What he said. You don't NEED to max everything. I'd rather have a skill that I can pick and not be able to max all my skills, than being able to max all my base skills and not have a bonus choice.

Lets put this another way. Have you ever played a RPG where you can max every skill? Most RPGs let you max certain skills such as melee, ranged, or magic. But you can never have all of them maxed out. You can't even max every skill in ME1, so why should you be able to do it in ME2.

Edit: On my first play through as an Adept, I put points into Pull, Warp, and Singularity. Well then I came across Jack's Bonus Warp Ammo skill. I didn't have enough points to max out Warp Ammo, however I had wasted points in Pull which I didn't really need. So I respeced and put points from Pull into Warp Ammo. I didn't hardly ever use Pull anyway, so I was happy to put the points in Warp Ammo. You can't use all of your skills all of the time anyways, and having a limited number of points actually makes you streamline your character to be better.
