Watching videos, I've seen that the two handers, at least some of them, are very slow and heavy - and perhaps they'll have a bigger chance of actually missing the target. What I'm not convinced of is whether it'll be able to parry anything at all. It seems like the sword and shield combo will provide both better protection and better dps?
What do you think? The coolness factor of carrying a huge weapon is of course ever-present.

I doubt the DPS will be higher. The Two handed talent tree is designed towards doing more damage whereas the Sword and Board talents are more defense and enemy control. Not sure if the two handed abilities strke as soon as you hit the button or are more of a 'on next swing' thing, but I doubt the speed of them will matter (more damage per hit, evens out).

Theres no way sword & shield will do more dmg than a 2hander, unless Bioware did an epic fail on balance. However, it seem's like the shield is finally more than a mere +AC.
However, you're right about 2handers being awfully slow. I've been wondering about their defensive value myself. But there's got to be some, as the "all dmg no defense" style seems to be 2handed combat

One can hope that wearing massive armor and killing stuff faster will make up for the lack of defenses?

I very much doubt sword and shield will be doing much damage, all the talents are cc or defense (except for assault, but you don't get that for quite a bit), while two hander style gets several damage increasing stances and armor sundering/penetrating abilities. And if you're worried about not hitting, just get that precise striking talent.
With that in mind, you may be swinging that 2-hander slow, but when you hit, it's gonna hurt.

so,
2 handed weapons = SMASH......SMASH........SMASH
Sword + Board = slash...block...slash....smack
dual weapons = slice.dice.slice.dice.
I'm going with the shield option. Like the Warden from LOTRO, the fighter in DA:O seems to actually be able to use their shield for something.

I guess there's the shield bash ability/power ability using the shield - but look at Sten in the video, he's applying his large sword to push enemies away too.
I think you're right, nobody would use the two handers if they were both slow -and- there were single handers with a better damage output, there's a trade-off. It'll all depend on how valuable or effective shields actually are; if you don't have a shield, are you really going to be in trouble, or will the ac of armor or high dexterity for dodging make up for that..? Hard to say really, still unsure where to go with my first warrior.

Sword and Shield is a good standard for a starting warrior and not knowing how the game mechanics will work I can't give any more detail than that. However, It is actually relatively easy to parry with a two handed sword and with your ability to smash past armor I would put the 2H at a higher DD than a sword shield. Heres how the normal breakdown is. Dual Wielding is DPS with a hit to armor and slightly less accuracy *normally*, sword and board are more common and strike a balance, giving the greatest defense. the fact that shields are used in combat only adds to this builds usefulness. 2H are the heavy DD, armor piercing, cleaving ect. Each can hold their own just fine, comes down to personal preference. Personally, I built one of each.

I prefer two one-hand sword.
They are quickly and light.
Two-hand weapons are too heavy.

It's a tough chocie for me because I enjoy all three combos... For my rogue I'm totally going two blades which I love... for the warrior, I think I'll go Sword/Shield ... it just suits his 'knightly' noble background.

Bashing people around with the shield is my greatest love of all.
