What I find most frustrating

The very poor squad AI...  With all the work put into making changes, and that I read somewhere that there was going to be a 'stay the hell where I told you to stay' button, well, I'm disappointed... If I tell them to take cover, too often they go to the wrong spot, and then they leave the spot to follow me once I've reached a certain distance away from them.  If I leave them there it's because I want them to stay there until I tell them otherwise.  So much for developing my own tactics...  I guess it's a limitation of the linear missions, where every piece of cover is blatantly obvious, and the enemy's imminent appearance just beyond that cover is no surprise.  Add to this the lack of intelligence in the AI, such that they bump into each other and run on the spot when I tell them to do something... If squadmate A is on my left, and squadmate B is behind me, and I tell squadmate B to go to a position forward and left, chances are, they'll bump into squadmate A and keep running on the spot for a while until they figure out they can actually walk around them...

Come on Bioware... I bought the Collector's Edition because I had faith in you - but this is getting to be pathetic...  Or is this all EA's fault?  Sure, let's blame them instead.  Why not?

I'm sick of being frustrated in more than half of the fights because the AI comes out of cover when it shouldn't, and doesn't take cover when I tell it to, and doesn't stay put when I tell it to.  If I'm going on ahead alone, it's for a reason!  If you give me control of my squadmates, because I'm the commander, don't take it away because the AI is needy...

Edit : If you need a good example, learn from Brothers In Arms

Save often and replay. It might not work as you want, but the game itself isnt that hard to beat (at least not at normal) :D

Go code an artificial intelligence matrix and then come back and tell me how well it turns out. Go ahead. Do it.

I took up this challenge.  It's working really well.  What now?

The squad AI works fine.  It's not going to play the game for you.

It's sad that you think they need your help to cop out...

Try Brother In Arms : Hell's Highway and tell me how many times the AI bumps into itself.  Never - and they take cover where you tell them to, and they don't leave it until you tell them to.

That's the whole point of having command of a squad.

Really?  So you're ok with them leaving cover when they're being shot at, after you've told them to take cover? And you're ok with them bumping into each other like bumper cars?  Give me a break - I've seen better pathing code in games with one quarter of the resources to which these guys have access...

Boom... headshot.

I am trying to rally support for more discussion on this very topic. Post comments in the linked thread and lets see if we can get some real discussion on these forums rather then the "LOL BIOWARE SUX" or "ME2 PHAILZ" threads that are currently dominating.

Focus discussions on this topic in that one thread, hopefully we can get some traction on the topic.

Imho, this is a real issue, much more so then the multitude of "omg why kant i haz purty armur lulz" or "OMG TALI IS TEH SEX" threads that are around.

I'm tired of your disingenuous assertions.

Also, this. I found the AI works just fine. I often don't even need to command my squad. Beyond this one time where I obliterated both Tali and Samara with the Cain, I haven't noticed a truly glaring problem.

AI is really hard to do.

But to help support why your point is valid, one reason why Halo is so successful in pulling off a consistent and enjoyable experience isn't just graphics and a nice armory for an FPS. It's an incredibly well done enemy AI that keeps the game unpredictably replayable. I felt like that was one of the things lacking in Mass Effect is a good AI for both your sqaudies and you're enemies. Thing is, I'd rather them work on dialogue and do what they do best with character development than make the next epic FPS. We have enough FPS games out there.

I dunno. While overbearing, I find the squad AI absolutely hilarious at times.

It always makes me giggle to see jacob and thane practically on top of each other behind one teeny tiny box while facing off a heavy mech. And you can also distract the big guys to keep them from killing your squaddies when they're having a moment in which they stand smack out in the open with a sniper rifle taking their time to take a good shot by pulling some biotics or tech on them.

I will have a look at the linked thread, thanks for that.

I just had a fight on the first planet where the collector's are still collecting, and there are several waves of enemies. After every wave, I had to pause the game and tell my squad mates to take cover - and when the last wave started, I was suddenly nowhere near where I had been, but was suddenly out in the open... Some weird stuff going on...
