"Developer BioWare has a busy 2011 ahead of them, with a new Dragon
Age title, Star Wars: The Old Republic and, according to EA execs
"something far-reaching coming from Mass Effect" in early 2011.
Electronic Arts COO John Schappert added that "something
far-reaching" from the Mass Effect franchise to the list of upcoming
titles due in the fourth quarter of the company's 2011 fiscal year.
That means something Mass Effect related arriving between January 1 and March 31 of next calendar year.
Could BioWare have Mass Effect 3 wrapped up by then? The developer's
project manager Casey Hudson noted that they "definitely want to make
'Mass Effect 3' a fairly short turnaround." And, well, that would be
fairly short."

Could it be Mass Effect 3? or an expansion pack? Or something completely different?

I almost hope that it isn't Mass Effect 3. I want Bioware to spend as much time as they need on it, and I would hope that it would take longer than a year to make it.

I think it will be more of major DLC of some sorts, and then ME 3 would either come out at the end of 2011, or the beginning of 2012.

although ME 3 could be a possibility too, because the engine is already there.

There's no way they'll release ME3 eleven months after ME2. I think we may be dealing with an expansion release to hold us over untill they realy do release ME3

I never said they will (and I doubt it), but they never said no ME3 in 2011

what else could they expand on for ME2, maybe a liara DLC? Problem is that its not really fitting. I mean if you look at DA:O they're releasing an expansion 5 months after release and yet they're saying they will wait 1 year for a ME expansion. Also, DA is releasing yet another title in March 2011. In a little over a year 3 titles for DA? To add to this casey said it will be a fairly short turnaround meaning it'll be shorter than ME1-ME2. My guess is that ME3 will come out end of 2011. If not then some crazy DLC but it really doesn't make sense to release a DLC a year after release.

It's a way to paste your own face into the game, so you really can be Shepard.

I don't see why not?   the Dragon's Age expansion is already being released relatively close to the original's release date (from November to March!), and it wouldn't make sense to release for them to release a Mass Effect 2 so far away!

More so, they most likely have the engine down (using ME2's engine), so they wouldn't have to build from scratch...KOTOR 2 was made a little over a year after KOTOR 1, and that was made by a completely different company with little knowledge of the original game.  Given that it'll be Bioware that works on ME3, it should be possible to build a game by 2011. (ME2 probably had to be finished by December 09, so it's possible they started sending some of the people to start working on ME3 towards the end of the project).

Not saying it WILL be ME3, I'm just saying it's probably possible to finish ME3 within a year.

It took them 2 years to develop ME2, and they had to build it almost from the ground up with a new system and new graphics and new mostly everything.

It won't take 2 years to develop ME3 since they are building on top of what they have, and don't need to create new architecture.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it a spin off title for the Nintendo DS (just to be different lol). Here is why:

1. Early 2011 seems far to early for mass effect 3 and, using dragon age as a standard, to late for an expansion

2. There is a lot of money to be made from the mass effect brand and while ea is improving their reputation they do love to expand their brands to a breaking point.

3. Bioware does have some experience working with the ds (that sonic game) and have made a hand-held mass effect game (the iphone one)

I know there is no real evidence for this but might as well throw in another idea into the speculation pot.

BioWare should to take a long walk in park, breath some fresh air, and work on REAL sequel to ME1.

No more rushed out spin off.

maybe a bridge expansion in between mass effect 2 and 3, you know to connect things up.
