OS:      Windows XP SP3
CPU:    2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo e8200
RAM:   3.25 GB
VIDEO:            nVidia GeForce 8800gt 512
AUDIO:            DirectX 9.0c compatible
DirectX            9.0c

I bought the retail copy from my local 'game' store in the UK.
Installed it fine, and launched it.
Gameplay was stuttering, and sound was awful.
So I browsed the forums here, and tried the suggestions. driver updates etc.
I restart the game, playback is fine this time round.

I download, dragon armour, zaheed and normandy crash.
All goes well.

Then the crashes start to occur, followed by the freezes on the loading screens.

I attempt all suggestions, lowering the resoultions, playing in windowed mode, playing with all visual enhancments switched firmly off.
Again no change.

I browse the forums some more, I now have to go thru the whole gamut of visual c++, dx9 runtime dist, all drivers upto date.
My motherboard, soundcard etc.. have all been updated to.latest drivers.
I check my whole system from top to bottom, and it's running smooth.

Bingo , the game starts again, and plays solidly for the next few days, enough for me to get all all but miranda loyal.
Thing is Mirandas mission causes the game to freeze on the loading screen for the actual mission.

I try the age old , switch off and switch on the computer several hundred times, and occasionlaly get the launcher to actually start a game off.
I browse some more on these forums, for the suitable remedies. There is nothing that I haven't tried.

I then uninstall and try to reinstall the game....alas I'm now told by the installer that there was a data error, and the game will no longer install!

The experience so far reminds me of my last break up with a woman I was dating.. the slow degrading of mutual interest until finally... it ends.

So, I'm sat here twiddiling my fingers.
Whilst my friends with their consoles play the game , and can't discuss with me a thing, so as not to ruin my experience.

I wouldn't mind, but DA:O played perfectly, as do my other games on my system.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a whine, I'm usually a non-whiner however this has really been a dissapointing experience. The game is fantastic of what I have played of it.. so I'm hoping a patch is in the works.

Although, with the sudden 'data error' on install, I have this horrible feeling I'm going to get screwed over.

regards

I have no solutions to offer, but I should have read these horror stories before I bought the game. I got it today, logged into the same EA acct I created for DA:O. Got the Cerberus running which I didn't expect because of the massive thread on that not working in tech support. The set up was weird in that it didn't offer my max screen resolution of 1680 X 1050, but after activating Cerberus, there was a option to boost the graphics. I still have a bad feeling about the game now though.

Might as well jump right in and get what I can out of it. If it works great, if not chaulk it up to another failed game!

Don't pre-judge, game is astoundingly good.

I should have known to wait for patch before attempting to play this or any game Tbh.

There are always kinks to iron out, especially on the pc platform.

I sympathise - you're certainly not alone in issues with crashing. I thought all was ok until suddenly they started. My entire computer just locks up completely with a continuous beep coming out the speakers. All there is to do is reset the computer and reboot.

I've had several suggestions as to what might be the cause and none seem to blame the game. Why defend it!?
Anyway, the primary factor that was blamed was my system overheating. This was not the case as I always keep a close eye of those things. I've just installed a new CPU watercooler and a custom graphics card cooler and that has lowered temperatures but I doubt Mass Effect 2 has changed - I will let you know as I am currently in the process of re-installing it.

An interesting thing however is that a few minutes ago I got this exact same crash within Windows, as soon as I opened Windows Media Player. I started getting some crashes earlier after I installed my sound card (which I've had for a few years now). Let's just say I've removed the sound card and am using the motherboard on-board audio. Perhaps this will also fix Mass Effect 2's crashes?
Who knows. I still believe that in the majority of cases, the crashes are nothing a patch can't fix.

I am a sci-fi fan, and I ordered even though my gaing friends suggested I steer clear. I ignored them and bought it. While waiting for the delivery I started to read the forums and my heart sank reading about all the horror stories. I've been playing it now for about 12 hours (game time) and I love it. So far it is running flawlessly on a Vista 64 bit OS.

My only complaint is the hideously long game loads and location loads.
