No offense, but why do we need to download something to see the results? Can someone just type out the percentages?
The dude put way too much work into that pdf (probably more then really should have been put into it for a video game

I wonder how many voters here didnt play ME1. I think in special Ashley, Kaiden and Liara suffer because of them. Additional the ME1-LI decision will probably affect the results quite a bit (in special Kaiden).
For the rest i aggree with Ieldra2.

Interesting results. Mostly predictable. And depressing - be funny or the King of Cool and you'll be popular. Be a bit double-edged or a bit less obviously interesting, be a character that takes some effort to come to know - in short, be an *interesting* character rather than a *likeable* one - and you'll be rather less well received.
I still hope, that this fact will change, due to the coming of age of games.

Depressingly like real life. Only Garrus stands out as the exception. One can only hope that Bioware will continue to put controversial characters into their games. A game without characters like Jack and Miranda just wouldn't be the same.
I have to respectfully disagree.
Kaidan was as "likeable" a character as Tali, yet Tali has more devoted fans then anyone. Except for Tali being a female Quarian, what are is the major (personality) difference between her and Kaidan? Neither was especially funny or "cool," at least in the traditional sense. Neither was double edged.
On the other side Wrex was one of my least favorite characters on my first playthough, but at this point is my favorite in either game. The reults of the survey confirm that it isn't just me.

For what it's worth, my ratings would be as follows (I know they won't go towards any stats, but I'd like to rate them for my own benefit more than anything):
Ashley - 5
Kaidan - 4
Wrex - 10
Garrus - 10
Tali - 8
Liara - 9
Miranda - 8
Jacob - 7
Mordin - 9
Grunt - 8
Jack - 8
Thane - 10
Samara - 10
Morinth - don't know yet
Legion - 8
Zaeed - 1

Can't access that file, can you just post the results here please?
After downloading the file, you should remove the "_" from the .pdf extension. I know, it's just a stupid thing that Windows Live Skydrive does.

I can't even download the file, I get a weird XML error.
What browser are you using? Perhaps Windows Live doesn't support it.
I'll upload to Google Docs, then.

XX55XX, for all the criticism I gave you, that was a surprisingly very good read. Thanks for doing that, it actually broke up the monotony on these boards. I rescind my criticism. My apologies. you really put a lot work into this. I'd be interested in the rest of the polls after the initial 200. Would it be thrown off if you did the calculations after the initial 200?
I highly doubt increasing the sample size would have altered the means in any significant way. A significantly large enough sample size (in this case, 200), would have been completely representative of the entire population (in this case, all Mass Effect 2 players who registered with BioWare's social network).

It would have been interesting to have a few extra questions added, so that some comparisons, hypotheses and effect sizes could have been explored. For example - asking those who took the time to rate the squadmates whether they had played the first game and if so, whether their ratings of ME1 characters changed between games. Also - whether they were rating squadmates based on their character, or how effective they were in combat or another reason entirely. That would have given the results some context.
Regardless - an interesting survey nonetheless, and thanks for taking the time to type all that into SPSS, and sharing the results.

Some questions:
1.) Have you considered trying this kind of poll outside the ME forums? I'm actually super interested to see what the opinions are of people who do not post here are... I'm actually pretty certain you'd get some very different results.
2.) I was curious about how you said Liara's lower score was indicative of her presentation in ME2. It seems to me that most of her fans pretty much disregard it and most everyone else doesn't give it much thought. Have you considered what the Mass Effect comic did for her popularity? Do you think such considerations enter in to the general equation?
3.) Actually, the love interests in general just seem to have very high deviations (Except Tali). Do you think that this is related to the fact that while most characters one can experience all their dialogue and character without exclusively having to choose them, people who romance one character actually do lose out on quite a bit of dialogue from every other potential romantic partners. In essence, if I choose to romance Thane in ME2, I will get several extra dialogues from him, meanwhile I will miss out on dialogues from Garrus, Jacob, Jack, Miranda, and Tali that might influence my opinion.
Just some things to think about : )
