It would have been interesting to have a few extra questions added, so that some comparisons, hypotheses and effect sizes could have been explored. For example - asking those who took the time to rate the squadmates whether they had played the first game and if so, whether their ratings of ME1 characters changed between games. Also - whether they were rating squadmates based on their character, or how effective they were in combat or another reason entirely. That would have given the results some context.

Regardless - an interesting survey nonetheless, and thanks for taking the time to type all that into SPSS, and sharing the results. 

Yeah - perhaps I might redesign the survey a little in the future. But yes, there are many variables that could have affected people's ratings of characters - and using what limited numbers we have, we can only provide an interpretation.

I know that in Gallup polls, the pollsters ask tons of questions of all stripes, perhaps as a way of "controlling" their samples...

In essence, if I choose to romance Thane in ME2, I will get several extra dialogues from him, meanwhile I will miss out on dialogues from Garrus, Jacob, Jack, Miranda, and Tali that might influence my opinion.

1. No, I haven't. But if I had posted this survey elsewhere, I doubt the sample size could have gotten as large as it did in this thread. This place is a nexus for all us Mass Effect fans.

2. No, I didn't consider that at all. Her portrayal in the comic may have altered people's reception of her somewhat, but the numbers we have don't tell us how that affected her overall rating.

3. Impossible to know, but your explanation seems plausible. But again, from the numbers, it's hard to judge on what the survey tells us alone.

Ashley - 3 ( she is really a filler in a team in my opinion, if you aren't playing as soldier )

Kaiden - 5 ( good side story )

Wrex - 6 ( for his sense of humor )

Garrus - 7 ( cool attitude against Shepard, easy going/spicy jokes )

Tali - 10 ( greatest character in ME series, for overall personality, story, attitude )

Liara - 5 ( she had a nice personality, but she lost much in my eyes when she began killing for revenge )

Miranda - 5 ( she may sem to be the ME2 LI suggestion from game developers, but her femme fatale style don't hit the spot )

Jacob - 7 ( loyal, experienced, also has a cool personality, could easily take Garrus'es place in crew, if it was needed OFC )

Mordin - 10 ( my second favourite, regardless of his killer attitude, he is very funny and trustworthy character )

Grunt - 6 ( he is nice when comes to the fight, but i liked Wrex much more )

Jack - 5 ( another unnecessary straight-biotic character, but deserves justice )

Thane - 7 ( good story, adds much more soul to the game )

Samara - 7 ( one of most loyal, and has unbroken will - exceptional underling )

Morinth - 6 ( just a substitute for Samara, but is a nice addition as Samara's nemesis )

Legion - 9 ( at least something - ok someone, who shows the other side of the Morning War story, a prophet of peace between Quarians and Geth )

Zaeed - 1 ( worse dlc I ever saw, really brings nothing to the story, actually made him loyal only because wanted to keep other crew members alive during suicide mission )



My judgements may seem too much emotional to you, but I cannot describe it any better way than if i were Shepard for real. XD

Garrus Vakarian - 8 (Cool character, liked having him around and in my squad. Seems to be some utlitarian paragon character. Seems lost in ME2, but I don't see much difference in character between games.)
Kaiden Alenko - 6 (Dull, but nice character. Hostility to Cerberus in character)
Liara T'Soni - 6 (Naive and interesting in ME1, ruined in ME2.)
Tali'Zorah - 7 (Vibrant, informative character and much improved in ME2.)
Wrex - 10 (The embodiment of action-cliches and coolness. An incredibly loyal character at the end of it.)

ME2
Grunt - 4 (Huh? He likes killing things? Has a passive violence complex? I don't care for him, was a boring character. The only real redeeming thing was his mission gave an insight into the Krogan life.)
Jack - 0 (I hate characters like this. Not even in a downtrodden cyberpunk game do I like characters like this. The whole concept of even recruting her was completely irresponsible and keeping her on the ship was even worse. I tried to get her killed in the final mission.)
Jacob Taylor - 6 (See Kaiden. He's a bit like him, without the biotics. Nothing against him, but seems like he'd be very trustworthy anyway.)
Legion - 7 (Interesting concept. I'm not sure I preferred the Geth as a hostile synthetic machine against organics or anonymous fighting some schism. Got him killed in the final mission, so didn't get to talk to him much.)
Miranda Lawson - 10 (Accent and appearance fills a lot up here, but I think there is a lot of wasted opportunity in the dialogue options with her in getting to underpin her character. There are obvious psychological issues with her that Cerberus have used, or she has allowed to use but were not expanded upon enough - especially in the context of her father).
Mordin Solus - 10 (It's Sheldon Cooper! God this guy is awesome. Pure rational and I accept his argument for the genophage).
Morinth - 2 (Haven't killed Samara, don't intend to. Black Widow does not appeal to me).
Samara - 3 (This should be a lot higher if it was not for a completely irresponsible justicar code. As soon as I meet here, I learn this exemplar of justice has plans to kill an entire police force simply doing their job. I then learn that upon me assisting her, she will abandon her code to assist me for effectively no reason at all!? Good concept, horrendous application. She should have killed off Zaeed on sight.)
Thane Krios - 8 (Cool voice actor, interesting addition of a new race.  I like his character).
Zaeed Massani - 5 (Not expanded enough for me to note. His war stories don't tell me about his character much).
