I've noticed a cleanup this mess option when talking to my hound sometimes. What is this for? He doesn't loot anything.....

It is in regards to the large amount of blood freeing itself from its container (it tends to happen when you poke someone intensely with a weapon) and decorating your body (basically, a blood-be-gone service).

He gets an HP bonus, no? I think I read that somewhere, don't quote me. (Edit: Wiki says he gains health. It's like a liquid mabari crunch. That is... gross.)

Can the dog ever get pissed at you? Is there a sidequest with the dog? I hear giving certain gifts to the dog allows him to fetch nice items, but I've been kinda waiting to give him a gift when and if he can get pissed at me lol.

Dog always loves you. The bones in the game are gifts for him, but he will love you whether or not you give them to him. There are some fun easter eggs that involve Dog, but no real quests.

I have used this option once or twice but never noticed a difference.

So what's the point in giving the dog gifts? Just a waste? I read somewhere he'll fetch better items, but I just got done giving him 2 bones and nothing.

Well, Dog did survive the Darkspawn taint, so go head and call him "Commander Puppy" if you like. Yes, I know it wasn't technically a Joining, but still....who can deny that face?

Apparently if you give him a gift and immediately ask him to fetch something, he'll come back with a good item. I've never tried it personally, since I always forget to grab his gifts out of the storage chest before heading out, but the wiki says it works... Other than that, though, there's no reason to give him the gifts.
I haven't really noticed anything special from having him clean you up, either. Once again, the wiki says it does something, though...

Aha! Thanks for the info. I will continue to give Dog's gifts to the other companions instead of him. It always makes me giggle inside. =P
