i've heard A LOT of different things.  some say you can only use the revenant LMG when you get on the collector ship and others say you can learn AR training and use the AR and BR but cant use the Revenant LMG.

SOO i would greatly appreciate a final answer to this question.  thanks guys

all classes get the opportunity to learn a new weapon skill on the collector ship. the choices are AR, shotgun and sniper
For classes that can already use those weapons they can choose between a special version of one of the above or learning another weapon type

The specials are:
Revenant LMG (soldiers only)
Claymore Shotty (soldiers and vanguards)
Widow Sniper (soldiers and infiltrators)

If you choose not to take the special you can choose another weapon training instead. So basically any class can learn AR, but only soldier can use LMG
There's also the geth pulse rifle available as a third AR option if you do Tali's recruitment on hardcore or insanity

I haven't done NG+ yet because I'm too busy playing with my other sheps so I'm not sure what happens when you get to the collector ship a second time

You already have an SMG as a Vanguard, so you don't really need the AR, because it's not that much of an upgrade. Go for sniper proficiency and use the Viper sniper rifle from the Thane recruitment mission imo.

I'd get the AR just for the Geth Pusle Rifle. it is brutal to shields and barriers. High firing rate is great for a vanguard after a heavy charge (better than a shotgun in this situation). You can fire about 20 pulses into the enemy's head (and then punch him) before he can react.

And also the fact that AR is the only weapon that can be upgraded to +60% damage.

yes you can get the pulse rifle as a vanguard. Play Haelstrom on hardcore or insanity and it will appear (The mission where Tali joins your party)

Yes, but do it on the Normandy. My friend confirmed this the other day. You however will have to wait until you train with the AR to use it.

What's the point of playing Vanguard then? Vanguard with a Sniper Rifle is a waste of talents. Both Soldiers and Infiltrators are far better Snipers, Vanguard is suited for Shotgun, not for Sniper Rifle.

using long range weapons for vg nerf him i think. just get in there and shoot/melee and charge again. it's a rush to be on the verge of death and take that last guy down

vanguard elitism.  now i've seen it all.  but since you ask, here's a few:

the different shotguns have their quirks and playstyle niches.  personally i hate having to be perfect with the one-shot/one-reload of the claymore and never take it.  similarly, i prefer to switch weapons as little as possible and keeping the evis equipped is more viable for that not-quite-short-range where people typically use the SMG.

can you use Charge in every battle?  sure.  is it fun in every battle?  no.  there are a few fights along the way where it's just a pain in the ass or outright impossible to be the primary offensive force because of the types of enemies you're facing or the terrain setup.  in those cases you are already falling back into other classes' domains since you're not Charging every cooldown.  just because in your mind "long-range sniper" is some kind of polar opposite antithetical to your ideal of what the vanguard should be doesn't make occassional use of the sniper rifle a breach of Holy class Roles.

many reasons exist for expanding weapon types rather than gaining a minor (and niche) upgrade to an already possessed type.

allowing the main character to fulfill a greater variety of combat roles also allows for a greater variety in teammate options for missions.  some would say that greater variety is more fun than anally trying to optimize every bullet fired or power launched.

There are battles where you cannot or wouldn't want to charge your targets. For example, there are several places that have enemies with heavy weapons at long distance on some high platform you cannot charge to. In that situation, it would be very nice to have a Viper or a Vindicator.

Speaking of the Vindicator on a Vanguard...

classes don't have to be played just one way. A soldier cannot access Pull, and an Adept cannot have both shotguns and sniper rifles, so the Vanguard offers something these classes cannot do even if you make only sporadic or no use of Charge. Don't be afraid to try something different. That's why you have multiple save slots.

I use the vindicator/eviscerator on my vanguard and I love it.

Also, like the above poster stated, vanguards have limited biotic abilities aside from charge. I like playing the vanguard as a soldier/adept mix, and not just a charge bot. That's how I played vanguard in ME1, I didn't even put points into shotguns. I maxed out all the biotic talents and picked singularity as my bonus.
