As the topic suggests, I am here looking for input on fighting dragons on Hard or Nightmare difficulty.

As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no way to kill full sized dragons  (at least the two I have encountered thus far).

Luckily, both fights are optional, so while they might enhance the story some way or give special items, it isn't required to fight them.

However, there is absolutely no way to do it.

3 ranged + 1 tank doesnt work because eventually the dragon will grab the tank and kill him no matter how many potions I have stocked up.

2 ranged + 2 tanks dont work because eventually the dragon will grab one of the tanks, kill him, then eventually grab the other tank, and kill him too.

The reason why they don't work is simple, the dragon has WAY too much HP and armor on Hard+ difficulty.  Archery deals around 4-5 damage per shot.  Even Slayer shot, which can instantly kill normal monsters on Hard difficulty does only about 50-60 to a dragon.    Thus, no matter how long the tanks can hold the dragon with potions, the dragon will eventually grab and kill them because it doesn't lose HP.

Magic would seem like it could work a little except that against one of the dragons you dont have access to Morrigan with, and my character isn't a mage (mine is the archer).  Wynne is dead in my game, but I doubt she would help that much in this fight.  Or maybe she would?


Anyone have any luck beating a dragon on Hard+ legitimately that could offer some advice? =X

They can certainly be killed on Normal, through a lot of strategy, great gear, and a sprinkling of luck. I have never tried them on a harder difficulty level. I recommend coming for them when you are nearing the end of the game, and are a certifiable BA.
