Hey,  I figure this has to be a massive bug but here goes.

In the tutorial I stand in the glowing circle facing the locker and press space, but it wont open.

I changed the controls to "use" from Space to Enter, and gave space its functionality from ME1 [Squad command].

I then try again, but still no avail; Enter fares no better than Space, and yet here's the kicker, Space WORKS for the Squad Commands, but not for opening the locker.

What gives, any help would be GREATLY appreciated, this glitch is very wierd and EXTREMELY annoying.

I successfully imported a level 49 Sole Survivor, Earthborn, Paragon, Soldier Shepard With Wrex and Ashley and the council [with Anerson] alive if that makes any difference.

I am curious whether you ever got past that point. It requires a minimum feedback capability from the video solution, and some low quality hardware whose slowness might have been tolerable in ME-1, simply cannot respond with adequate timeliness. Typically, it has been various onboard video chips that fail this responsiveness test.

Gorath is right this is likely an issue with your video card. Have you ever gotten past that point? If not what are your system specs.

I was in the old posts cemetary (that's all you can get at with the Search on-site), and saw one buried question (this one) not as old as most, and never had been answered.  In my definitions glossary, a video chip and a video card are two very different things; however, at least one each Geforce 7300, Geforce 8400, and Radeon HD 2400 have all failed to work with the game mechanics this way, that I can remember.

I seem to have this same problem, though EA customer support had no answer. Thus far, it seems that all who have this problem have hardware on the low end of or below recommended compatibility. As such, is there any possibly way to circumvent this part of the game short of dropping $50 for a video card upgrade?

No. Even if there was, you would then have problems opening doors, picking up heavy weaopns and heavy weapon ammo, accessing the weapons locker on board the ship, hacknig terminals, bypassing locked doors and the like.
System requirements are listed for a reason.

Last week, there was a special model older Radeon for $30 after rebate. It was detuned somewhat to sell that cheaply, with DDR2 VRAM instead of the normal GDDR3.

The developers made the conscious choice to use a function that would have the effect of putting "teeth" into the minimum named graphics cards, and therefore created a list of cards that weren't good enough:

Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater(**); ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce G.205, G.210, 310, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9100, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon X1300, X1550, HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4350, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.
(**)Two of the Geforce 6800s are worse than the next-lower Geforce game card, the 6600 GT, and should be avoided (6800 SE, 6800 XT).
