If you have cancelled your SQL 2005 express setup before doing this fix, it seems you will have to delete the LDF and MDF as Hazado22 stated. Thanks.

 So, I may fail at reading comprehension, but - Per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935371

I solve for symptom 1, which generates symptom 2.  This is where my issue lies:

Symptom2 : "When you install SQL Server Express SP2 or SQL Server Express with Advanced Services SP2 on an existing instance of SQL Server Express, the following error messages is logged in the SQLSetup0001_ComputerName_SQL.log file:"

Solution: "To work around this problem, reinstall SQL Server Express SP2 or SQL Server Express with Advanced Services SP2 on the existing instance of SQL Server Express."

Let's crop these down:

Symptom 2: "... install SQL Server Express SP2 or SQL Server Express with Advanced Services SP2 on an existing instance of SQL Server Express"
Solution:      "... install SQL Server Express SP2 or SQL Server Express with Advanced Services SP2 on the existing instance of SQL Server Express."

Problem: "My cat bites me when I pick it up."
Solution: "Pick your cat up."


Edit:

Solved it.  I had not properly uninstalled the SQL pack prior to attempting to solve for symptom 1.  A proper solve of symptom 1 does not generate symptom 2.  I do still laugh at the wording for symptom 2's solution, however.

For some reason, I get this error but I do not have an install folder in the MSSQL directory... all it contains is 3 folders called Data, LOG, and Template Data... Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Never mind, found it, it's only showing during the install...
