Planet scanning could have been handled so much better by simply giving the planets less resource deposits and having those fewer deposits pay off in greater numbers. For example, if you had five times fewer spots to probe, the entire process wouldn't feel like such annoying and unnecessary padding. That deposit of Platinum which currently gives you 1000 could instead give you 5000 to balance having fewer hot spots. 2k could be 10k, etc. You could have 10 / 20 or 15 / 30 probes instead of 30 / 60. You could balance it out anyway you can imagine or want to, but any kind of setup that has you doing it less would be better. You'd still have to search out the spots so it's not like it would trivialize it either.

Toning down the amount of deposits would also encourage exploring new planets and systems and stumbling upon more anomolies and side missions rather than sticking to one and mining the hell out of it for many many minutes, it can feel incredibly repetitive and quite unrewarding gathering enough materials over and over for that one ship upgrade. Still, it's mostly not required unless you really want these or those upgrades. But you often feel like you are missing out if you don't go for those as the game has no traditional loot to speak of.

What do you think? Could it be fixed, should it be fixed? It's not something that could be easily patched because of the sheer amount of planets you can gather from. I love the game but it's really one of the least enjoyable aspects for me. They came so close to making it good too.

I don't mind it all that much, but quick fixes would be:

A) Fewer, but larger deposits.

B) A much more sensitive scanner. You should pick up a faint signature from far away on the map and have to play the hot/cold game until you find it. Some deposits go from zero signal to max signal in just a few pixels (playing on PC). That fact alone makes people do the up/down every column scanning that is completely soul sucking.

Planet scanning is unforgivable. It should be something else.

Whenever I scan a planet in which the description tells me that miners are already there, working hard, I feel bad for using my magical probes from stealing all their resources. Seriously, if mining is this easy, why are there large scale mining operations at all?

I'm not really bothered by it the way it is, but I wouldn't mind the changes you mention either. Maybe it will develop into something that irritates me more when I've already completed the game a time or two.

I don't mind the planet scanning, but all these threads about it is annoying. Post your thoughts in the sticked wish-list thread and call it a day.

Sorry to bother you with yet another post you cold have simply ignored instead up bumping yourself, there is no search function so finding other threads on this topic are nearly impossible.

As for the wishlist thread you mention, that says Mass Effect 3, not 2. Since BioWare are still working on new content for 2 they could possibly fix something like this sooner in Mass Effect 2 rather than (2 years) later in ME3. They might even scrap this aspect entirely for 3 and try something else.

I liked it my first play through if for nothing else, but the chance to find new bases and stuff. On my 3rd play through though i was like WTF. Now on my 4th play through i'm just ... @#@$ :)

but those are all me1 imports. :)

Improve the Planet Scanning!

The
new mini-game was fun the first 5 times, after that it just got down
right tedious (same as Mako on uncharted worlds). Now people complained
about the Mako, bioware listened. Hopefully the hovertank will be
better when it comes out. At the same time most people will tell you
there were a few genuinely fun missions with the Mako in the first
game. The gameplay needed refining. Likewise uncharted worlds weren't
boring because they were uncharted, they were boring because there was
nothing to do. In the end the new scanning of planets was as bad, if
not worse than uncharted worlds. Exploring the uncharted worlds at
least, was opptional.

I propose a solution:

Vehicle
gameplay is good, and I expect once they release the Hovertank it will
be very well polished. That means they have good, working vehicle
action when Mass Effect 3 roles around.

-So when Mass Effect 3 roles around, give us back the uncharted worlds and let us shoot crap.

-Come
up with a simple procedural generation system that creates unique
terrain, drops down a few rocks, some trees where appropriate, and make
sure that every map has enemies roaming around available to fight.
Mount and blade made this work for their battlefields, if some Turkish
guy and his wife can pull it off, you can to Bioware!

-Randomly
generated worlds allow for a different experience on every planet (and
every planet to be explorable). Resources are randomly dropped around
the planet, like in ME 1

-For the actual scanning, integrate the old ME2 planet scan interface that shows the bars of resources and clicks/beeps as you near the particular resource. When the player gets to the resource, dont make them jump out of the car just to sit and play a stupid hacking mini-game!
Have them hover over the resource in the tank, hold down a key for 2-3
seconds while the tank 'synthesizes' it, then allow the player to
continue on with their business. This will allow the player a fun way
to search for resources without having to drive up every 90 degree
grade on a planet to find 3 deposits of light metal. It's a very
clearly guided, simple thing.

-Keep a few N7 missions around to make things entertaining.

I would like to be able to orbit a planet and ... :

"Hey EDI, scan this planet for me please and get me some resources."

Manual scanning is dumb.

Oh, and there cannot be enough of these threads. There should be a new one, every hour, on the hour. Compared to how fun the rest of the game is, scanning feels so incredibly NOT fun. It's mind boggling.
