the game is not too difficult, thats for sure. i started on nightmare straight up and went to redcliffe first also. the village fight was somewhat challenging, but not even close to being frustrating. the castle part is easy since it has lots of rooms and doorways so you can choose when and where to engage the enemy. if you cant make it through even on easy then i suspect the problem is between the chair and the keyboard.

actually, the hill area battle was kind of frustrating since i think the game bugged on me somehow the zombies just stopped on the top of the hill and wouldnt attack me. i had to run through my own fire trap numerous times to engage them before they started coming down the hill.

Well I just completed a game on nightmare with a party made entirely of warriors. Redcliffe was the first area I went to. Now, I won't say it was easy, but it's not impossible and you don't need a healer as long as yo have a few potions.

Groups can be split. You might need a range of 3-4 rooms to run through, but eventually you'll lose aggro from some enemies. Using a bow to pull some to you works as well, usually only the target will attack if you're at a far enough range.

For the dog fight it was a matter of opening the door, then running back 3 rooms to the rest of the party; only 2 dogs would follow at a time.

For the courtyard you can stand in the entry and take down every enemy with a bow without anyone charging your group; just be careful about your party trying to reposition itself. The revenant is tough, but if you saved the knights, open the gate and let them charge it first. If not i may take a few tries, but let it attack your tank (taunt. You do have taunt right? It's probably the most important skill for a tank in a party with squishies) and then take it down with ranged attacks. Don't let the tank die.

Also, when you're in the castle (and any other building, block off doorways with your tank to limit the number of enemies that can initially attack you.

No area in the game is "too early" since they all scale to your level. Some of them are set a bit higher than others but the difference isn't that much. It's just a matter of taking your time, being cautious and using proper pulling. Having mages, especially with some CC, only makes this easier, just don't let them get hit.

The difficulty of this game is relative to how many Mages you have in your party.

Sad but true.

any battle is easy with mage

if you have inferno use it

if you don't

get grease in the meantime

glyph of repulsion + glyph of paralysis is totally rape too

doesn't really matter what you choose, just get some nice crowd control and AoE

Problem with the Redcliffe Zombie Invasion is the 2nd wave and the belief that you are supposed to save the Militia. The 1st Wave is pedestrian. 2nd wave is one of the renowned huge difficulty spikes in the game, probably one of the toughest fights in the game due in a great part to "Ye Olde HA, your party has been teleported to the cutscene location" which means you cant put one or two guys down outside the Chantry to reinforce the Militia there, or have...tactics or stuff. Instead you have to rush down into a really messed up situation where hordes of undead are mixed up into a mess of militia. To compound matters, Dwyn and his buddies sit up at the pedestrian area and dont help out down at the Chantry where they might make a difference. Added to this, theres something like 30-40 undead in the second wave with no breaks to recover Stamina/Mana.

Here is how to relieve your stress. Dont bother saving the militia. They are expendable redshirts - sure theres some reward if they survive, but seriously....not worth the bother. Really isnt. Sit up on the hill and rain down AOEs, plus pull the odd bad guy with your Mages staff. If you miscalculate and pull a large amount, rush back up to the Knights. The undead seem to be heavily resistant to cold damage and immune to Nature damage so Id say this is an occassion where 2 warriors + 2 Mages (both healing/crowd controlling) will work better than 1 Warrior + 3 Mages given Morrigan is one of those Mage options and her staff wont be useful. Also Morrigan is generally a bad option as she is just generally hostile to helping the good folk of Redcliffe.

Rev in the courtyard isnt too hard - let the Knights in with the lever, get your Mage to CoC the Rev then shatter it with a critical or Stonefist spell. Actually, CoC everything in the castle and then shatter it.

If you have a hard time in Redcliff (which may happen if you don't have enough AE/CC ie. don't use Morrigan) then simply go elsewhere and come back later.

Redcliffe is actually one of the best areas to go to first. It and the Circle Tower scale down to levels 7 or 8... in turn, Orz has enemies that don't go below ten no matter what your level when you arrive there. It makes going there first a scary thing.

If it is your first time playing the game, there's no shame in playing it at normal or easy. Even if you could defeat (other game) at (highest difficulty level), this is a new game with a new rules system: you might need a bit of time to get used to it and all that. :)

If you have a proper tank (that means threaten + taunt + armor to survive being beat on- Alistair is the most obvious choice, but Shale isn't bad for it, either), you should be able to avoid your Mage getting hit unless you have mobs swarming (note that none come down the hill, at least- it's a safe place to stand and AOE, if need be) or are over-dpsing. It is true that the more Mages, the easier the fight is, but the fight is doable without them (my first play-through, I did it with a very fighter heavy party (and one rogue), and I actually saved more militia then when I did it on this one with two mages... of course, on my first playthrough I did Redcliffe last, while this time I did it second). If you do have them, though, you'll want the heal. Heal is a very, very nice spell.

taunt hardly works according to my party statistics, just like armor differences lol, the one who hits the most gets the agro usually and there are some bosses which might just be preset on mages ... not sure about that one but it is nasty result for a game where mobs run through characters.
